I just thought I'd ask.

YABU The COVID 19 pandemic IS "over."

YANBU The COVID 19 pandemic is not "over".

I know a couple of people who have had covid in the last month, one of them, a fit man in his 50s has been left with a post viral heart issue which is currently under investigation.

It seems to have the ability to affect people very differently to the flu.

Nugg · 21/08/2023 06:51

I'm on my third bout at the moment. I'm clinically vulnerable so have a cupboard full of tests and did one out of interest - then wasn't even sure what if anything to do.

Wow the government nudge units really did a number on some people on this thread. It’s like they have the shakes from Covid withdrawal syndrome.

Perhaps there's a jealous MIL thread you'd enjoy more instead?

I think you only report it if it's one of the original NHS ones. Mine isn't so I'm not part of the official case numbers. Do we even have official case numbers any more?

It does seem a bit reckless not to have anything in place in case a more contagious or more severe or both variant comes along. We'll have no idea what's going on. Are we just reliant on what other countries tell us now? Maybe they've all given up too?

My brother's friend has a new heart condition post-covid.

Since he's been adamant on Facebook that covid is just a cold, long covid isn't real, any new heart conditions are caused by the vaccine which he didn't get, or the lockdowns he didn't abide by and wasn't particularly affected by as a key worker even my mum metaphorically has the popcorn out. (Whilst obviously being very sorry for him and hoping this will help bring him back to reality.)

DH gets up at 5am and I can't wait as dehydrated but too ill to go downstairs for water....

I was secretly hoping the light of my phone screen would wake him up, but alas not.

How are you doing @wheresmymojo?

The NHS have even stopped precautions for ECV patients. My OH has cancer and there aren't any precautions at all in the day treatment centre when he's having his infusions. No staff (not even nurses giving the treatments) are wearing masks, the treatment chairs are literally next to each other, some even touching, no signs of ventilation, no screens, etc. Treatment chairs not being wiped between patients, no requirement for testing before attending for day treatment! Same in the waiting areas for the oncology consulting rooms - tiny waiting area with patients and their partners crammed in together like sardines, again, no ventilation. I can't believe that after something that did so much damage and caused so many deaths, that the NHS has learned nothing. It's no surprise that infections like covid, flu, novovirus, etc spread like wildfire in hospitals.

Q
And on the other extreme I had a cancer diagnosis and operation and the staff were so mask obsessed that I couldn't hear a word they were saying to me. Nor was my partner allowed in to listen for me. So I was meant to make decisions on stuff when I didn't know what the hel, any of them were going on about.

Samlewis96 · 22/08/2023 15:23

babybopella · 18/08/2023 12:43

I would say ultimately it was the cancer.
I say the figures are not accurate because I was in hospital not long ago, I had covid while I was in there but I wasn’t in there for that, I was well in myself, just that they made me test and it was positive. I was fine and was in hospital for something completely different. The time I was there, they had figures of patients in hospital with covid.. I was one of them, but why? I wasn’t being treated for it, nor was I even poorly. So it’s not accurate it’s just a load of made up rubbish

My mum suffered a stroke in 2021. A week after having g it we were allowed to see her as she was at end of life. However while my brother was with her they were still swabbing her to test for covid
d s
She didn't have it but if she had tested positive then then she'd have counted as a " covid" death which was ridiculous as she was within hours of death from the stroke

verdantverdure · 22/08/2023 15:35

I don't think that's true @Samlewis96

Covid is only on your death certificate if they think it contributed to your death.

@Samlewis96 verdant verdure is right. In fact COVID deaths are undercounted because if you die from a covid-induced side effect, such as a heart attack (which we know is much more likely post-infection) COVID is unlikely to be listed as a cause.or even contributing factor.

There were stories left right and centre coming out like Samiewis account above. Where loved ones were dying, being repeatedly swabbed in hosp, getting a positive, dying then covid being listed on death cert.
i’m of the opinion the death numbers were massively inflated, not under. Even my sister who did end of life care was shocked at the testing obsession on dying patients.

I know 3 people with vaccine injury but nobody with post viral fatigue. We all have different experiences in life

verdantverdure · 23/08/2023 11:12

I always think those stories are made up though @AussieManque
because that's not how it works.

But the publicised deaths that they released every bloody day were Deaths within 28 days of a positive test. Or have you forgotten that?

The 28 day is a quick indicator but the final official figure is by death certificate.

How it “should” have worked and how it actually worked were probably very different.

i dont believe all the relatives of people on end of life care with covid on their cert are lying. Neither do i think my sister is lying 🤷🏼‍♀️

It does - flu was far worse for me. Took me months to recover. Covid I feel a bit tired for a few days. It affects everyone differently.

verdantverdure · 24/08/2023 14:34

I'm a great believer in "boots on the ground" anecdotal evidence @RedPony1 but because of a complete absence of tests to begin with and then a shortage of tests for at least the first six months of the pandemic, it's pretty much accepted that the covid death toll is an undercount.

OP posts:
YearoftheRabbit23 · 24/08/2023 14:44

@verdantverdure not to mention that many hospitals are no longer testing even when COVID symptoms are evident. Definitely an undercount.

The bigger concern for most people is not the acute stage of the infection, but the after effects. A 1 in 10 chance of long term problems per infection is not trivial.

Yes, even in people who didn't think the initial infection was bad at all.

And they think covid depletes our T cells or something? So our defences are weakened if we come into contact with another virus or a different strain of covid.

AND new dominant strains have often mutated and evolved in the body of people with compromised immunity. (Like the clinically vulnerable who were first advised to shield and then told to "crack on."

I barely understand a tenth of what I read about it but Covid seems well set up and here to stay unfortunately

Especially since we have a "No NPIs, Vaccine only" covid strategy.

But we're not really vaccinating people either.
