Please tell me how you spider proof your house?!

I need serious help.

I've had two huge spiders crawl on me in the past month and one has just now run across my living room floor.

I've also got rid of 3 false widows this week. So that's 6 spiders in a month. I've never seen this many in a short period of time until I moved here.

I really need some advice on how to prevent them, I am absolutely petrified.

I use the peppermint spray and conkers which help a little, but the game changer for me is a plug in electronic spider scarer. I was very sceptical but to my amazement they actually work! My husband bought me two, one upstairs one downstairs, and I rarely see a spider in my house now, which is a massive relief as I'm petrified of the buggars!

I don’t suppose you have a link?

TabbyM · 18/08/2023 11:03

Does anyone else have the nasty spindly spiders? We usually have lots of the chunky house spiders but this year lots of the pale spindly ones that are hard to catch and chuck out.

TabbyM · 18/08/2023 11:13

I think the spindly ones are cellar spiders having read the full thread - will be avoiding using anything toxic in the house, conkers definitely don't work as mine got webbed on... will keep an eye out for the essential oil spray as OH wakes me at night to remove the big ones.

Lemieux7 · 18/08/2023 14:21

The spindly ones get rid of the big black ones - I've told my kids to leave them in the house 😂

Thisisme23 · 18/08/2023 14:27

I haven't read all the posts so may have already been suggested but you could try conkers.
It's a bit early in the season yet - but when horse chestnuts start dropping from the trees - go round and pick a load up. Drop a few in each corner of every room.
I used to live in the countryside where there were HUGE spiders and this really did deter them in the autumn when they come inside looking for a home. It doesn't work so well with small spiders but works a treat with the big house spiders (no idea if it will deter the false widows)

Anyone who suggests getting a cat needs to watch that hilarious video, because of its accuracy. Cats only eat spiders if you care about spiders and aren't ridiculously terrified of them 😭.

The only cat I've known to hunt spiders was my mums rather neurotic if beautiful Persian/British shorthair cross, and she only did it until she was bitten (spider also bit me when I was rescuing the cat/seeing if I could rescue the spider. Only time a spider has harmed me, not a false widow luckily, so just a weird tingly feel on my finger for half an hour.)

We encourage spiders generally as we have sodding clothes moths, but I get where you're coming from. We have looked into parasitic wasps, but wasps are my phobia and the thought of having thousands of them hatching out under the furniture does not make me feel calm and happy to say the least.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/08/2023 14:53

What's scary about a spider in the UK, they're not carnivorous!

Hmm Yes, because people are only allowed to have phobias of carnivorous things.

DanceWithTheBigBoysAgain · 18/08/2023 14:59

They definitely are carnivorous - they just don't eat people.

Lemieux7 · 18/08/2023 15:20

My ragdolls don't eat spiders but they will swat them with their massive paws.

malificent7 · 18/08/2023 15:42

Poor beasties....they really don't do much harm...unless you live in Australia!

GrouchyKiwi · 18/08/2023 16:08

Neither of our cats deal with spiders. The dog likes to follow them as they run away from her down the hallway.

Our previous house had very few spiders as it was a new build. Our new house is about 50 years old and has large numbers of massive house spiders that are big enough to be crushed if you open the door over them (have found two dead in this manner). DH is the Minister In Charge of Removal in this house; he takes them out to a large bush in the garden. I have managed to bravely rehome two large fuckers.

I am learning to cope with them as there are just so many. DD3's room is a particular haven; she names the ones who make a home in the corner of her ceiling.

teaorme · 18/08/2023 16:11

Omg following I can’t stand them!!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 18/08/2023 16:18

Cellar spiders. We have quite a few of them on each room and they eat the big leggy bastards so I’m happy letting them live here with me. Cats are as useful as a chocolate teapot although boy cat got an elephant hawk moth and killed it before I could get it off him.

toomuchlikemyusername · 18/08/2023 17:22

You can also buy a spray called Dethlac (try hardware stores for it) which creates an invisible barrier around openings. I use it a couple of times a year (inside and out) on the air bricks that we have and it has helped reduce numbers in the house. Plus a healthy population of cellar spiders. We've at least one per room and they seem to quietly do a go job.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/08/2023 17:24

Get two cats. My two kill anything that moves.

Welcometotheocbitch · 18/08/2023 17:56

Irational fear of them from me!! I’ve never heard of indorex - If I type indorex into Amazon does the box have any pictures on it..? I have eucalyptus oil on the window and door ledges and diffuse it too which is meant to deter them

elm26 · 15/08/2023 22:59

@Unexpectedlysinglemum urgh 😩 I'm a sucker for fresh air so I have all the windows open in my flat.

This will be it. In Autumn mature male spiders come into houses to look for a mate - it is happening earlier this year because of the weird weather.
