Please tell me how you spider proof your house?!

I need serious help.

I've had two huge spiders crawl on me in the past month and one has just now run across my living room floor.

I've also got rid of 3 false widows this week. So that's 6 spiders in a month. I've never seen this many in a short period of time until I moved here.

I really need some advice on how to prevent them, I am absolutely petrified.

@Pollyputhekettleon I might have to get somebody in to do a deep clean. I do have a 12 week old daughter and a dog. If I were to spray anything, I'd need to do it with them both out for a good few hours.

Don't think you can do the diatomaceous earth then. Spray should be ok if you do it while they're out of the house and leave it for a good long while. And don't do it too near where your baby sleeps.

You could also get pest control people to assess where you have gaps into your home, like big holes where utility pipes come in etc. Blocking them up can't hurt, from an energy saving point of view too.

elm26 · 15/08/2023 22:49

@SummerSazz I wish I could live like that ☹️

Just been for a walk and we saw two massive huge ones runnjng in front of us across the pavement. They were like what you expect to see in October.

Cannot believe we are seeing them now.

They were so big.

I have indorex.

I'm going to wait for the response on here telling me where is best to spray then tomorrow morning it's getting done.

Allotmenthelp · 15/08/2023 22:50

Have you seen those spider catchers, they have a look handle with bristles on the end? The were an absolute game changer for me. I felt more in control about what I would do if I saw one. They are about £10 on Amazon.

Indorex spray does work, you find a couple of dead ones on the floor after spraying. It’s not great for the environment and will kill other bugs such as ladybirds and moths etc.

I ended up having a couple of hypnotherapy sessions. I haven’t had many big spiders yet this year but I’m much less anxious about seeing one and won’t use the Indorex again.

I can really emphasise OP, it’s a horrible fear at this time of year and can really affect your life.

JobMatch3000 · 15/08/2023 22:51

SpiderX.
Our cat ignores them - useless.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/08/2023 22:53

Thanks for the info about Indorex. I've used it for fleas, but now I know it kills spiders I shall not use it again.

I had one crawl into my 1 week old baby's cot 😭😭😭😭
Close up the ventilation vents if you have them

No it's dangerous to close vents. It will increase the CO2 in the room which is really bad for the baby. It will also cause mould and damp which is equally dangerous, especially in a climate like the UK. Get fly screen, or just buy some cheap muslim, cut it to size, and stick it in place with duct tape.

@somethinghastochangesoon it's like they're on steroids 😭

Cats

Yep
I haven’t seen any this year.

elm26 · 15/08/2023 22:58

@Allotmenthelp funnily enough, my hairdresser was showing me one last time I saw her. Her mum is also a hypnotherapist and she told me to give her a call. So I might do that when I've saved some money. It's horrible isn't it. It's like a jump scare.

@Pollyputhekettleon they breed very fast, you need to keep one top of them.

First I would go around house looking for their distinctive web, Google.

Find them and get rid. Then outside windows, doors, we had loads in our front porch and gas box. Because they are so small they never worried me until a few people had nasty bites so I till action.
We had some still but touch wood a few years on, not as bad.
I also sprayed red raid on them outside the window.

elm26 · 15/08/2023 22:59

@Unexpectedlysinglemum urgh 😩 I'm a sucker for fresh air so I have all the windows open in my flat.

otherwayup · 15/08/2023 23:00

We put conkers in various corners in every room. Fresh ones yearly.
Our previously spider infested house now has barely any!
Anyone know why this works?!

Get fly mesh for them, it'll stop the spiders too. And reducing the fly population reduces the food available to the spiders.

Thanks very much. I didn't realize they were small, assumed they were big things.

Packageholiday · 15/08/2023 23:01

Sometimes you can get infested and esp with false widows in a house with dc, I'd get on top of it early.

ichundich · 15/08/2023 23:01

Bernadinetta · 15/08/2023 22:47

Get a cat

My cat is useless at catching spiders! She spits them back out as presumably she doesn't like the feeling of them crawling around in her mouth. Or maybe they bite her tongue.

Polly no and they are big enough to scare me a little but normally the size I can tolerate.
It's the fact they do bite and more people I know have had a nasty bite than not.. They breed extremely fast and are the fastest growing spider breed across Europe.

Pixie18 · 15/08/2023 23:03

Spray absolutely everywhere with ardap spray. Curtains , window seals , skirting . Every nook and cranny. The tins are big and enough to cover whole house x

Packageholiday · 15/08/2023 23:05

O@otherwayup i believe it's about blocking the pheromone from spider lovers.

That's what peppermint does, hides the smell so they didn't know where to go.

That's what this morning told me anyway. Also keeps front doors clear of leaves and room clear of clutter.

Mochudubh · 15/08/2023 23:07

To be honest ( and I know it's not what you want to hear) I don't think you can "spider proof" I try to co-exist, if they don't bother me, I won't bother them. I won't kill them though because I understand they perform a function.

It's a bit early for conkers but I've heard they deter spiders to if you put them in corners/under furniture where spiders lurk

If DH isn't around to remove them from the bath/shower I have to admit I have a strip wash at the basin. I'll even have a strip wash at the kitchen sink if the spider is too close to the bathroom whb. I do make a toilet roll "ladder" for them though.

HopefulSeller · 15/08/2023 23:12

I wish I knew how to keep spiders away too, I don’t like using sprays.

I’ve read that keeping areas hovered, in corners, in corners of rooms, by windows and washing outside of windows by regularly cleans can help. They live in undisturbed corners I guess so just making sure all nooks and crannies are hovered.
