"Side hustle"

I absolutely fucking hate this turn of phrase?

Do you mean part time job? Say that then.

Do you mean "being self employed"? Why not say that like a grown up?

I just hate it, I don't know if it's meant to sound cute or faux "street" or what. Never heard of a man with a "side hustle"

It's usually selling shit make-up to your mates isn't it? Domain of the "girl boss".

MasterOfOne · 15/08/2023 21:08

Agree - its a second job right? So just say my second/other job??

IglesiasPiggl · 15/08/2023 21:13

To me, side hustle carries the implication that it's something you're doing in your spare time alongside your main job that might over time develop into a self-employed job to replace your current one.

panko · 15/08/2023 21:15

It means it's not regular enough to be a job

Men have "hobbles", "foreigners", and various other words, depending what part of the country you live on.

fettuccini · 15/08/2023 21:30

I loathe the term 'side hustle'! And I have one that I do all my side my full time job, I just call it my business like normal people.

See 'Girl Boss', 'Boss Woman', 'Boss babe' (🤮), 'SheEO', 'She shed', 'Mompreneur'. Gross.

patterpittercake · 15/08/2023 21:45

I have a 'proper job' with a regular income. But I refer to my secondary job as a side hustle as it's more like a hobby that pays. I do it a few evenings a week and it makes me a bit of money that I see as a bonus. I don't see it as a part-time job possibility because I enjoy it!

patterpittercake · 15/08/2023 21:46

*possibly

PurpleButterflyWings · 15/08/2023 21:48

YANBU. LOATHE this phrase too!

64rabbits · 15/08/2023 21:49

I've never been bothered by this phrase in the slightest tbh.

SaySomethingMan · 15/08/2023 21:49

It’s a normal ‘turn of phrase’ is some circles.
I do t mind it. All the people i know who refer to there “side hustles” are men. None of them is white.

Mompreneur! I agree. So irksome!

Weird thing to say. Confused

drinkuptheezider · 15/08/2023 21:52

Sounds like an illegal, dodgy deal type of job to me!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/08/2023 21:52

Tax free income on the side

CantFindTheBeat · 15/08/2023 21:53

Lots of youngsters (anyone below 29, to me!) use the term.

I'm fine with it, it's good shorthand for what it is.

The OP shared their anecdotal demographic. i’ve shared mine - male and non-white 🤷‍♀️

Medsy · 15/08/2023 22:07

It used to he side gig or I do X on the side.

I'm interested in where this "hustle" comes from and what it's trying to say.

It introduces the notion of a struggle of some kind, some kind of glamour or romance to it, like you're in a film or something

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 15/08/2023 22:09

Meh.

doroda · 15/08/2023 22:13

I always think it's shorthand for things that bring in very little income, like an MLM or designing notebooks on canva to sell on Amazon

Thewallsof · 15/08/2023 22:15

I think it's none of those things you mentioned so that's why it has it's one phrase.

Hustle has been used to describe working hard to provide for one’s family in certain (eg US) cultures for generations. People have referred to their hustle for their families for a very long time.
Its just become more ‘mainstream’

0021andabit · 15/08/2023 22:28

I’ve definitely heard side hustle used by & about mine. I don’t think it’s gendered.

Its different to a second job, more like a hobby that’s been monetised, often entrepreneurial. I work in an industry with alot of freelancers, so, I think it has it’s uses.

0021andabit · 15/08/2023 22:29
  • men not mine!
