To ask how often you have treats?

I have always considered myself a reasonably healthy eater. Balanced diet, not overdoing the treats, etc.

I’m currently staying with a friend’s family (DF, her DH and 15 yo DD). They’re all gorgeous and slim and sporty - and the way they eat has been pretty eye opening. Everything cooked from scratch, whole foods, lots of fish and seafood, lots of vegetables in interesting preparations, herbs and spices I’ve never even heard of.

And they don’t snack. Possibly the occasional piece of fruit and she’s baked a cake once this week, which we had after dinner a couple of times. But, that’s it. No little treats. Just three (admittedly large and delicious) meals a day.

I commented on this and DF shrugged and said “I don’t think things are treats if I have them every day. An occasional treat, for me, is once a week or something.”

I feel a bit stupid, but this blew my mind. I have ALWAYS had a little daily treat (sometimes several) and have always just assumed this was the case for everyone. A bar of chocolate or a packet of crisps or something. AIBU? If you consider yourself reasonably healthy, how often do you snack/have a little treat?

Every day. Occasionally have a day without, occasionally have a day with more than one treat.
By treat I mean crisps, choc bar, biscuits etc. Although I agree with @Snapsnap1 about it not being a "treat" it's just processed shit that tastes nice.

tulipsunday · 15/08/2023 12:34

Everyday I will have something yummy - usually chocolate and more than one square 😂 I am a healthy weight, enjoy exercise and eat well otherwise so don't see why I should deny myself something nice daily

Hilarious that some people on this thread see a raw pepper or 6 eggs as a "treat".

I don't limit myself to treats once a week etc as I found by doing that I craved them more. I know have them in the press but tend to want them less when I know I can have them whenever.

I do tend to eat more treats at weekends or days I am not working so try to make extra filling meals those days.

This is totally Off Topic but that phrase "in the press" made me smile! I haven't heard that since my Granny died. Thanks for reminding me of her.

GangleLoper · 15/08/2023 12:57

I eat them when I feel like it, not usually every day and I don’t “plan” treats in the weekly shop.

Now I don’t drink alcohol I don’t get cravings for junk food.

Every day and I'm 9 stone. A bit bumpy and lumpy but not overweight. I eat all food cooked from scratch at home but also bloody love a McDonald's or takeaway curry once a week but I reckon crisps or a biscuit I have every day. Just had a chic chip cookie and it was fit A

I think 'ah that's some highly processed, fattening crap that will taste amazing' and then I eat it.

That’s how most people would describe a treat, I think. You can call it something else if you like, though!

Mm no, I don't think treats for everyone are junk food. I think of a treat as something I can't have often, normally because of price, though calories could play a part too. But regardless of what your treat is, by definition it's not a treat if you have it every day!

Joeylove88 · 16/08/2023 08:05

I consider myself an active fit and healthy person but I like a bit of chocolate sometimes after dinner and I have takeaways sometimes. I just do things in moderation I don't stuff my face with bad food unless it's a proper indulgence day!

MrFoxLovesComingToOurPlace · 16/08/2023 08:07

I have a treat every day - chocolate, cake or a pudding. But then I'm very fat Grin

Hufflepods · 16/08/2023 08:47

I'm not a three-meals-a-day person, it just isn't how I prefer to eat. I feel more sluggish after larger meals and prefer smaller more regular meals. I've preferred to eat like that since I was a young child.

For treats as in more unhealthy food i'm assuming based on you mentioning cake, I have one a day. Either in the evening or the afternoon in work with a cup of tea. I'm happy with this and it isn't something I feel I need to change. I can have 2 small biscuits, a handful of sweets or something and not feel obliged to finish the whole bag. I just don't see the need to save or restrict something so once a week or less if actually want to eat it.

Daily chocolate and ice cream. They're not treats though, as I have them whenever I like.

Thank goodness it's not just me

Sennelier1 · 16/08/2023 18:20

I absolutely don't have a sweet tooth, probably that's why I hardly snack at all. I guess I would if there was anything I really liked, but there isn 't. I don't like sweets, candy nor crisps. I do like good meals, I'm foody and an avid home-cook. My husband has to convince me to make desserts when we receive friends 😅When I thinkt about it, I probably would sooner have an extra (small) meal than a snack. I cook everything from scratch, fresh every day. I will eat chocolate now and then, but not every day and not a lot.

edenhills · 16/08/2023 18:27

I don't buy cakes or biscuits so if anyone wants them they have to bake them, DD bakes maybe once a week. We have crisps every day though. We eat similar to your friends except veggie burger and fries once a week on Fridays. I'm still overweight despite healthy eating because of all the beer and wine I drink. Kids and DH are normal weight .

JamSandle · 16/08/2023 18:30

Daily

Mememe1234 · 16/08/2023 23:50

I eat highly processed food daily. I know it’s bad for me but it tastes so good 😬

Doone21 · 17/08/2023 18:46

Might be a bit of both: I cook from scratch and good homecooked food fills you up and stops sugar crashes, etc. I always discourage snacking as its a bad habit for kids.
But I'm no saint I have a desk drawer of chocolate for when I fancy one.
But snacks like that are personal treats : id never offer them to guests that would be weird.
