Shauna2866 · 14/08/2023 19:48

hi just wondering can a traffic warden find out who a disability badge belongs to from the number of the front of the badge?
basically my cousin who’s an idiot decided to use my nans blue badge and he said the trafffic warden asked to see it and he refused to let them see it so they took pictures of his car front and back !!
my Nan is absolutely furious with him but we are thinking now what’s going to happen ?
will my Nan get in trouble even though she didn’t know ? He used it he takes her shopping and she left her badge in his car my Nan is a non driver so he does do a lot of driving but today he has used it for himself when he should not have done!!

yes, can be identified, I know this as lost one was returned by traffic warden

Nevermay · 14/08/2023 19:49

why didn't he just put his hands up to it? He would have made the situation a lot worse by not cooperating

PeopleAreWeird · 14/08/2023 19:50

No, nothing will happen to ur nan

Your cousin will get a fine in the post
Thats it

Shauna2866 · 14/08/2023 20:02

My mum has one of these badges. Shee uses it in my care when I take her shopping. Sometimes I get a big shop in for her but she doesn't come with me. Of course, if that happens I don't use a disabled parking bay ...I am able bodied. I do know people who don't get this though. They think that if they are shopping for the elderly/disabled person it's ok to use a disabled parking space. I know a person who quite deliberately does this and was surprised when she was challenged by someone actually disabled who wanted to use the disabled space. 🤔 Of course you can't do that. As others have said he will get a fine but it won't affect your nan.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 14/08/2023 20:38

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that it is true that your grandmother definitely won't get into trouble. The badge is the total responsibility of the person it is issued to and all the sources I can find say that the person it is issued to MUST NOT ALLOW misuse. If they do, which includes someone running an errand for them without them being with them, the maximum fine is £1000. Taking responsibility for it seems to involve not leaving it in someone's car/house etc. Having said that, it's probable that a photo through a windscreen wouldn't be clear enough to be used in a prosecution, so your grandmother will hopefully be fine. Your cousin might get a fine though for parking illegally and he would deserve it.

Mrsjayy · 14/08/2023 20:41

They will have gotten the number your Gran can just say her stupid grandchild took it without permission !

Flopsythebunny · 14/08/2023 20:42

From the front of the badge they can tell the sex and age of the badge holder. on the back is the badge holder's picture. They will contact your nan and cancel the badge because they can prove that there was missuse of the badge. your nan will have to give them your cousin's details so that they can prosecute. Your nan will have to re apply for a blue badge

Neonyellowfish · 14/08/2023 20:43

Can’t he just say your nan was in the shop and he was dropping something to the post office before collecting her again?

Choux · 14/08/2023 20:43

Am sure it's done on a case by case basis as to whether they decide the blue badge holder was involved in the misuse. My dad had a blue badge but was unwell and had dementia. The blue badge stayed in his car but he no longer had a license so only I drove it. He would never have known if I was misusing it.

Shauna2866 · 14/08/2023 20:50

Oh really so she will have to apply for a new badge 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ll let her no yeah she is worried about
getting a fine herself and getting in trouble I’ve told her just be honest and tell them he took it without her knowing she said she will and I’m not sure if she can as they seen him walking of on his own when they asked to see it he said no and walked of that’s when they started to take pictures

You might want to check your council's website. For example:

www.merton.gov.uk/streets-parking-transport/parking/bluebadge/enforcement

We will seek to prosecute all cases of misuse. Misusing a Blue Badge is a criminal offence that can lead to a £1,000 fine.

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 14/08/2023 20:54

It is a criminal offence for you or anyone else to misuse the badge. Doing so could lead to a £1,000 fine and confiscation of the badge. Making sure that the scheme is not abused will benefit genuine badge holders, such as yourself.

Police officers, traffic wardens, parking attendants and civil enforcement officers have the power to inspect the badge. These people should produce an identity card with their photograph on it to prove they are who they say they are. However, Civil Enforcement Officers are allowed to operate in plain clothes.
If any of these people ask to see the badge, you must show it to them. If you do not, you will be breaking the law and you could be fined up to £1,000. Enforcement officers also have right to retain the badge, without police presence, if they have reasonable grounds to do so.

Shauna2866 · 14/08/2023 20:59

Oh wow don’t think she will be to pleased if she gets a 1000 fine
I’ll have a read of this thank you

OP posts:
Choux · 14/08/2023 21:02

I think it's more likely your cousin will be the one to end up with a fine and a criminal record.

sparkleshin · 14/08/2023 21:06

A family member of your nan misused the badge. If he wont do it again, don't dob him in. Just lie about the situation, nan was in the shop and your cousin felt confronted and didnt know how to react

Shauna2866 · 14/08/2023 21:08

criminal record ? Will he have to go to court ? and yeah my nan said maybe she could say she was there as she doesn’t want him getting in trouble but they may have cameras to prove she wasn’t there but I’m sure she will no-more wants she receives a letter through the post

OP posts:
Choux · 14/08/2023 21:14

Do you really think if she says she was in a shop near the car the council will just say 'oh ok then. Case closed.'?

Your nan lying in an obvious lie will end up with her getting the badge confiscated and possibly also getting a fine.

Your cousin has been stupid and he needs to get himself out of this mess.

Freshstarts23 · 14/08/2023 21:18

Such frantic responses. Your cousin can see he had just dropped your Nan off. End of. No fines, court cases or anything else.

Freshstarts23 · 14/08/2023 21:18

Dramatic not frantic
