To ask for tacky ideas for MIL bday

It's MIL's birthday next week, she's 65. She's really hard to buy gifts for, never says what she wants and loves tacky tat. The sort of stuff that goes viral on Facebook/TikTok. But I'm really bad at buying tat presents. Any suggestions? What's trending on the tat scene at the moment?

Her hobbies are playing golf, watching soaps, and drinking wine. She has no interests really. She hates food gifts.

Another from a golfing family here. Get her a voucher for a round of golf at a different golf course to the one she usually plays at. Always goes down well.

Sorry, I actually like MIL but probably doesn't sound like it! Seriously, the only way I can describe what she likes is pointless tacky tat! Also for background, she's extremely wealthy (I'm certainly not) so it's definitely not snobbery or any form of classism on my part. I usually try to get treats for people, or something they'd like or use. She prefers value, basic products which are not things I'd gift anyone. She's got that sort of wartime mentality. If you get her anything remotely nice or luxurious she just regifts it or sells it.

DH and his siblings are buying her a fitness watch that can track her golf rounds. I just wanted to get her a little something.

Wartime mentality??
She's 65 not 95.

And describing 'drinking wine' as someone's 'hobby' is just nasty.

So many good ideas here!

trendy item that is also practical: Stanley cup with a golf related sticker for decoration.

it’s the stickers that make it worthy of Facebook marketplace.

the cups themselves are actually good quality so you won’t be buying tat.

I thought OP's question"what's trending on the tat scene at the moment" showed she was trying to be light-hearted - the post doesn't read as spiteful to me.

It's the sort of thing my family would say to/about each other affectionately - my daughter for example is a great lover of pointless tat - she openly admits it - and her dad and I joke together about what the greatest hits have been each year in terms of the tacky shit we get her (we are divorced so buy for her separately) - I'm quite certain neither of us hate her or look down on her for class-based reasons.....

OP, I believe that tacky golf shit abounds everywhere. You know, mugs with golfing pictures on, keyrings in the shape of a golf ball, stuff like that..... And tacky wine-based shit. You could get her one of those massive wine glasses you can fit a whole bottle into? My brother got one for my dad a little while ago - we were all completely non-plussed....

Go into Card Factory and have a look at their giftware. We like to express our love for one another with a sentimental mug in our family and I have bought quite a few from there - and they also do engraved wine glasses, whiskey tumblers, that type of stuff.....

A taxidermy class! My friend was given one for her birthday and stuffed a squirrel. MIL can have it on display in her house 😆
Taxidermy Classes for Beginners | London Taxidermy School | Prices From £65.00 (intotheblue.co.uk)

Wow, that's different!

How about a subscription to Persephone Books. Lots of post war literature, some romances, etc that might have a nostalgic appeal. Or, 6 bottles of her favourite wine?

Daisybuttercup12345 · 17/08/2023 16:56

You sound quite nasty tbh. Buy a nice gift card for an experience she will enjoy or something connected to her hobbies.

kelsaycobbles · 17/08/2023 17:21

She is trying to buy a gift the mil will enjoy but because her tastes are so very different she has admitted she doesn't really know

Why is that so hard? Why is it nasty to have different tastes ?

FlickyCrumble · 17/08/2023 17:23

A sun visor with her name on

Her wording was rude.

"I need to get a shitty gift for my SIL Kelsaycobbles - she's boring and only likes Star Wars nerd stuff and bullshit like that."

Would you say, "oh how thoughtful, they're getting me a gift," if you saw that text pop up on your phone when they sent it to you by mistake?

How do you think the MIL would feel if she saw this OP and title?

Don't be so silly, @Dreamegg has explained what she meant, just accept it
I love stuff that others think are shit. It makes me smile
We are all different
