Just got to the local shopping centre and I've parked up in a spot where there are no other cars around me, there are probably over 100 spaces to choose from, and this guy has just parked right next to my car and struggled to open his door to get out????? Why would you not just park in one of the other 100+ spots where you are free to swing your door open as wide as possible and crab walk out of your car....just wwhhhhyyy!!!!!

I’ve done this too.

I've done it too.

But I have also been a culprit. Just a couple of weeks ago - my excuse was that it wasn't a large car park and my running club were meeting for a training session so it was going to fill up. But once I parked I was quite glad that there was nobody in the car I'd parked next to as they were the only ones in the car park Grin. I went off for a warm-up and once I came back 10 minutes later there were few spaces left.

There are white lines painted on the ground to help you line up. Has no one ever noticed? Use your mirrors!!

I'm with you OP. Pack mentality.

If you’re reversing in, you can’t see the lines in the mirrors once you’re more than about half way in. So you either need enough room to be able to line up the car before you’re half way in, or a handy guide at a height that can be seen over the back of the car.

As long as you reverse in a straight line there is no longer any need to check the lines. Or angle the mirrors downwards and you will be able to see the floor if you need to.

That’s what I meant by having enough space to line yourself up, so that you can back straight in. If you’re having to go in at an angle, then it’s easier with a higher up guide.

I’m feeling your pain. I have FOUR car seats. I get the fight over parent and child. We are able bodied. We can walk. That’s fine. So I park miles away. Quietly wrestling them out. Come back to an empty car park but cannot open my doors. Then what???????

it’s a total nightmare. Start screaming stand still as I move it forward. Just park somewhere else.

justmyluck1234 · 12/08/2023 21:24

I hate this... tends to happen to me a lot. It's the same when there are like 30 free seats to choose from and someone decides to sit right next to you 🤨

liveforsummer · 12/08/2023 21:30

Some kind of primeval herding instinct lol. I noticed this in the toilets the phone week. 2 huge rows as I went to an awkward one to sit for a minute in peace as dc we're driving me insane. Next minute someone was right beside me - every other cubicle was empty. 😆

Whatthejackdawsaw · 12/08/2023 21:33

This happened to me about 30 minutes ago! Hardly any cars in supermarket car park, all very spaced out possibly up to 10 spaces between each car minimum, chose a spot well away from door. Came back to a car right alongside, I thought to myself why would the driver choose to have to think about how wide they can open their door when they could have parked in 100s of other free spaces?

kitsuneghost · 12/08/2023 21:36

I find it easier to park with a car for reference.
Can get in the tightest spaces in a car park or street parking but give me a big empty space I end up all manner of squinty.

If the car park’s empty it doesn’t matter.

RoseMartha · 12/08/2023 21:38

Lol. These things happen.

I was sitting in my car waiting for DD's and this car chose to park next to me. All well and good except when I got out a bit later to collect my dc's, i noticed they had parked sort of diagonal over the end of my space making it difficult for me to drive out. 🙄

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/08/2023 20:17

@LylaLee 😯 did she damage your door? She’d have got more than a hard stare if it had been my car

I don't think it was damaged. I was too cowardly to check immediately or confront her

amusedbush · 12/08/2023 21:52

A while ago I got to a shop just as it opened and I was the only person in the car park. When I came back a few minutes later, one other car had joined mine - guess where they'd parked? 😒

Another time, I deliberately drove to the back of the local retail park, which was pretty much empty. When I finished shopping and was walking back to my car, I watched a man in a huge SUV drive past - no exaggeration - about 100 spaces and he parked so close to my car, he could barely get out of his. He drove forward through two spaces, too, so the lines were perfectly visible!

This thread has taught me that some people need another car as a reference. If that is the case, that is very much a You Problem. Please figure it out and stop making it a Me Problem 😭

HennyPenny1234 · 12/08/2023 21:55

My mum has a postcard on her fridge. It's a sketch of one car in a huge car park and another driving pulling up and asking "are you leaving?"

I agree.

Perhaps these people need to use the large empty car park to practice their parking. Rather than pissing off all the competent drivers.

NameChange2589 · 12/08/2023 22:10

I had this on a bus the other day, practically empty bus, had my pick of the seats and a woman who got on at the same time as me followed behind me and was waiting for me to move up to the window seat so she could sit right next to me.

I actually just moved aside and let her sit down and then sat elsewhere. Very odd.

amicissimma · 12/08/2023 22:17

Like a PP, I've had this at the cinema. The largest in the complex, I was all alone. Just before the film started a man came in and sat down in the seat in front of me.

Naturally I got up and moved. I may have hurrumphed. He turned round and said 'Oh, did I sit in front of you?'. It's not often I'm lost for words ...

I too am a customer magnet. I often wonder if I should charge shops and restaurants to have me standing/sitting in them and draw in lots of business.

I have experienced the opposite where I parked next to someone because there was no space I could park that would not have been next to someone but unfortunately the driver was in the car and had a massive go at me for parking next to her.

Yesabsolutely · 12/08/2023 22:27

Because we are all human beings and we just park where we want to . I just park and not think about the psychological reasons why I have chosen that particular place. 🤷‍♀️

Bonfire23 · 12/08/2023 22:30

After I had a spinal op I was clear to drive but I needed the door open fully to swivel in and out as I couldn't bend or contort myself
Parked on an end space with the drivers door facing out, perfect I thought, nobody can park and block it
Came back to find someone parked next to me so I couldn't open the door and it wasn't even a fucking space Confused just abandoned
The nice security guy climbed in and reversed it out for me after the calls over the tannoy didn't work

USaYwHatNow · 12/08/2023 22:41

And same, same, but different. On a beach in Portugal, and my Dad made a beautiful 'camp' out of beach tent and wind breakers. Got there early, empty beach.

Another family came and set up camp diirrrectlyyy next to us, and proceeded to hang their stuff off our windbreakers 😂😂😂

The audacity. My dad's face was HILARIOUS!

Lindy2 · 12/08/2023 22:50

DH and I arrived at a shop before it opened so we were the only ones in the car park. The car park was big enough for at least 200 cars.

It was quite hot so I had the passenger door open to get some air while we waited for the shop to open.

Another car comes into the car park and the driver decides to park right next to us. They were so close to the open door I had to quickly close it before they actually knocked into it. At least 199 spaces to choose from which would have allowed me to keep the door open for some air, but no, they want that particular space. 🤔

AnneElliott · 12/08/2023 22:54

I'm with you op - it's weird. Like the people who sit next to you on an empty train carriage!

Eenymeanymineymo · 12/08/2023 23:13

I've wondered this many a time. I'm a retail manager and no matter where I am in the shop a customer will need something I'm stood next to/in front of. Even if its something we sell only 2 of in a week. Another manager joked 'If I was stood on the ceiling a customer would say...excuse me I'm trying to get to...' Its like a herd mentality or something. No matter where you are, what you are doing...people follow.
