I am in agony on the right hand side at the top back of my mouth. Couldn’t get an appointment at my dentist so had to pay private to be seen today. He could not find a cause. Teeth looked fine visually and on X-ray, he cold tested them and found one that was sensitive. The best he could suggest was an infection at the point of the nerve so he gave me antibiotics.

I took the first one a couple of hours ago alongside ibuprofen and cocodamol and it’s more painful than ever! Complete, sickening agony. I go on holiday tomorrow. Any suggestions other than chopping off my head?

Oil of cloves 💐

catherinewales · 12/08/2023 16:45

Keep taking the antibiotics it'll definitely be an infection if he didn't find anything. Can you take codeine? If so Paramol is amazing. It is expensive but well worth it.

Merryoldgoat · 12/08/2023 16:47

I use a hot water bottle and very hot flannel against the painful side.

Catsfrontbum · 12/08/2023 16:48

ok- I have been where you are and actually had a panic attack because of the pain-

salty warm water rinses will sooth and help with the infection.

a heat pad or hot water bottle on the side that’s causing pain will also help

bonjela or there is a specific tooth pain gel on the area may help by numbing. Can remember the name it’s in a tiny red box.

antibiotics will start to kick in tomorrow.

BakedTattie · 12/08/2023 16:57

Do you possibly have an exposed nerve? Have you had a scale and polish recently? Realistically nothing is going to properly help other than a dentist.

can you take codeine? It might take the edge off

thenightsky · 12/08/2023 17:00

OP has already taken Codeine (cocodamol).

I found bonjella over the whole tooth, plus surrounding gums helped. There's an adult version which is stronger. It begins with an A, but I cannot recall the name for the life of me!

Smleps · 12/08/2023 17:00

Another recommendation for warm salt water. I think it’s magic. Hope you get better soon.

CoachBeardsJane · 12/08/2023 17:00

Orajel

Yes!

Enforceddrysummer · 12/08/2023 17:03

Antibiotics take 24 hours to begin to work for a dental infection. Hopefully you'll feel much better soon. It's very odd that the dentist couldn't find the cause.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 12/08/2023 17:04

Gargle with salt water! I know it sounds vile and you probably doubt it will do anything but I promise! The salt kills the bacteria that's causing the pain and it usually takes an hour or so to start up again. I swear by it

UpUpUpU · 12/08/2023 17:09

I have just filled a hot water bottle so let’s see if it does anything 😫 So annoying as im
about to go on holiday

UpUpUpU · 12/08/2023 17:12

I was in there a good 20 minutes. He showed me all the X-rays etc and said he was stumped! I was hoping it was an obvious cavity with a quick filling to fix it. The tooth in question has a very old filling in it so he said it could be causing irritation but wasn’t sure. There are no cavities etc visible or on X-ray

I have been to the dentist today and taken cocodamol.

i had similar and it was a cracked cuspid. Intense throbbing pain but it wasn’t constant thank god. If it’s sensitive to heat as well as cold then the nerve is involved and that’s probably a root cancel or extraction. Did the dentist get you to bite on something to see if that affected the pain? That’s how mine diagnosed a crack cuspid when it couldn’t be seen in the X-ray.

Einevinefine · 12/08/2023 17:14

Hope those antibiotics kick in quick, you have my sympathy 🌸

UpUpUpU · 12/08/2023 17:52

Yes he got me to bite as well as putting a cotton pad sprayed with something really cold on it. I’ve just done the salt water rinse and have a hot water bottle.

ibuprofen and antibiotic due now so hopefully that may help as fee so fed up! Got a 3 hour drive then a flight tomorrow morning 😫

Orajel!

Yes to orajel but get the max strength one. It's a godsend while you're waiting for the antibiotics to kick in

UpUpUpU · 12/08/2023 18:28

Will have to see if I can get some on the way to the airport in the morning. I currently have a bit of relief so I’ve eaten some dinner and appreciating every second of being just in pain and not agony!

SaltyCrisps · 12/08/2023 18:51

As per suggestion above, go to late chemist and buy some oil of cloves. Good luck with it Flowers

stayathomer · 12/08/2023 18:53

Another for hot water bottle and weirdly dry white bread used to help too! Best of luck op, I’m so sorry x

Calvinlookingforhobbes · 12/08/2023 18:54

I had three completely natural births, two without even gas and air and can confirm that tooth ache hurts more. I’ve just recovered from an infected tooth and it was horrific. Use a cold compress on the side of your face and get good travel insurance so you can get treatment if you need it. Best of luck

When I had my wisdom teeth out, I was in total agony (dentist had to pretty much yank all 4 of them out as they were in such a weird angle, and even split the corners of my mouth) so I have massive sympathy with anyone with tooth ache. Warm salt water helped somewhat, and paracetamol every 4 hrs. There was a mouth wash as well, corsadol (however you spell it!) which also helped.

Could it be your jaw? www.nhs.uk/conditions/temporomandibular-disorder-tmd/
I was diagnosed with this recently and the pain was horrible. Ice packs and eating soft food for a few days really helped.
