I am in agony on the right hand side at the top back of my mouth. Couldn’t get an appointment at my dentist so had to pay private to be seen today. He could not find a cause. Teeth looked fine visually and on X-ray, he cold tested them and found one that was sensitive. The best he could suggest was an infection at the point of the nerve so he gave me antibiotics.

I took the first one a couple of hours ago alongside ibuprofen and cocodamol and it’s more painful than ever! Complete, sickening agony. I go on holiday tomorrow. Any suggestions other than chopping off my head?

I use a hot water bottle and very hot flannel against the painful side.

You should never use anything hot on a potential infection, especially in your teeth/head.

I'd go with icepacks.

Oh god really?! It’s all that’s ever helped me 🙈🙈🙈

Sorry that you are in pain. Toothache is unbearable.

I recently had an infection under a molar. I had clove oil and Orajel max strength, codeine and paracetamol and it still hurt.

Once the antibiotics kicked in it became much more manageable. I had to have the tooth removed a couple of weeks later.

Soak cotton wool in brandy or whisky, pack it around the tooth.

I’d be tempted to down the whole bottle! It’s been much more manageable this evening than it has been in the day. It’s time for cocodamol now then try and get some sleep. I’ve got painkillers by the bed for the inevitable wake up up in agony I’ll get in the middle of the night 😫
Thank you all, you have been so helpful

If it could be just a very sensitive tooth, brush gently around the tooth with a lot of Sensodyne toothpaste every couple of hours.
Could it be a sinus infection that's got into the nerve? DP has a lot of sinus problems and gets very painful teeth because of it. It can affect all his teeth or just one or two, it's quite random.

UpUpUpU · 12/08/2023 21:33

I really don’t know. Otherwise I feel fine, just this awful tooth pain. I did buy some sensodyn too and have been brushing with a kids brush 😬
Will update in the morning

Was at an ear specialist with my son over ear infections, he said the next one to use a hot water bottle to soothe the ear. I know you should obviously never use something scalding straight away after filling, but I'm another who's found great relief in this for toothache and the dentist just nodded along when I told him I'd used one

If it's that bad and dentist can't find source of pain I would have tooth taken out. I can't abide canal root fillings. Once spent a year going back and forth to dentist. Best day ever when I had tooth taken out very reluctantly by dentist.

DO BOT DO THIS. Heat can draw infection to the facial tissue. My dentist was very firm about this. Use cold to soothe as it stops swelling.

MagpiePi · 13/08/2023 10:44

Oil of cloves really does work.

LozzaChops101 · 13/08/2023 10:46

I had this from out of control bruxism a few weeks ago - a cold gel mat at night on the pillow and as many pain killers as you’re allowed is my only advice. Good luck!

Thank you all. I made it to Paris is one piece. Still sore but by no means agony. I’m hoping it’s the antibiotics working and just that I’ve got the painkillers spaced just right. Will update again in the morning

Oralgel is your friend.

SleepingisanArt · 13/08/2023 21:02

You can get Oralgel in the supermarkets plus Boots and other pharmacies (get the one in thd red box not the blue box). It's between £4 and £5 and the tube is tiny BUT you don't need much and it has an anaesthetic in it. I have a tube at home all the time 'just in case'! (The blue box is amazing for ulcers but not so good for tooth pain...)

maddening · 13/08/2023 21:02

Also, my dad was a dentist and I remember him advising against heat on an infection and I just searched it up and this comes up:

"Never ever place heat on a tooth that is hurting. Most of the time a painful tooth is the result of an infection. Placing heat on this will only make things worse and swell more."

maddening · 13/08/2023 21:03

Ps from husband and chap at work oralgel completely numbed bad teeth

UpUpUpU · 16/08/2023 10:37

Quick update. I am back from my wonderful trip to Paris! My tooth has improved significantly and today I woke up not in any pain at all. It is niggling a little now but I’m no way painful. I am on my last day of antibiotics today and that alongside cocodamol and ibuprofen had left my poor stomach feeling rubbish but I’ll work on that today. I’m at the dentist for a regular check up in a week or so so hopefully they can investigate further (or hopefully it miraculously goes away).
I will definitely get some oragel today as I’m feeling I’ve had too many painkillers and if it’s only niggling, the oragel should hopefully help.
thank you all so much!
