Cat has hurt the postman - help!

Apologies as I have already posted this to the litter tray but I need quick advice as in a bit of a state right now.

I heard a bit of a commotion when the post was delivered this morning. I found the cat hanging on to the letterbox, and looked outside to see the postman with a bloody hand. So the cat scratched/attacked him when he was putting the letter through.

I couldn't go out as I was on a work call, but I feel very guilty and worried. I feel bad for him, but I don't know what to do - do I call RM and apologise?

Could I be in trouble for the cat's actions? Or can the cat be in trouble or PTS for being vicious?

I will have to lock him away from the door every morning I suppose (if they don't cancel the delivery) as I don't think a cage will fit on the door to shield the letters.

Advice appreciated.

OP, you write: 'I have ordered a Velcro bag thing from Amazon to try and stop it happening again' - your cat can still scratch, as the thing is made of material. If you can't fix metal cage (or mesh, as cat still can put it's leg through bars), get post box to hang outside.
I am really not sure how you could proceed with your phone call, when you knew your cat just injured someone. You should have at least offered him to wash his hand, plaster and maybe even a cup of tea.

If it's a fire safety bag she wont get through it - and it sounds like it was the hand moving towards her that spooked her, which she wont see

NewNextOfKin · 11/08/2023 13:42

I am certain there will be a contraption that will address the issue, OP.

Cat scratches can become infected, yes, but that doesn't mean it will. Most scratches or bites will just heal without issue.

Most cat scratches will heal, cat bites that break skin are actually quite dangerous as the are prone to infection and sepsis.

Its basically like a hypodermic needle of bacteria straight through the skin and because they are usually just a small puncture wound people don't take them that serious unlike a dog bite (which has lower infection rates but usually greater tissue damage).

Proudgypsy · 11/08/2023 12:21

It's far from a minor event and not even in the slightest bit funny.

I really hope those of you who are brushing this off are not pet owners.

Impunity is what attracts many to a cat as a pet, it is not surprising to me many are minimising and dismissing.

If a dog had bit the postie giving them a bloody hand it would not be brushed off by either dog or cat owners.

Andthereyougo · 11/08/2023 13:51

Reugny · 11/08/2023 10:42

Cats unlike dogs are not considered to be under their owners control.

Saying that if your cat is likely to attack the postie and any delivery people, you need to keep your cat away from the front door.

This.
Fit one of those cages over the mailbox slot so letters drop into it.

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/08/2023 13:54

@rainbowsweets

why didn’t you get off your work call to see if he was ok?!

id have been fuming if I was the postman

Cowlover89 · 11/08/2023 13:56

The postie shouldn't of put his hand through the letterbox.

SmartHome · 11/08/2023 13:58

Does this necessiatate an entire thread. You should have checked in with the Postie. you didn't. You need to put a cage over the letetrbox. Or if one wont't fit, put up an external letter box outside the door. The End.

If it helps, I used to delievr leaflets between contract and was always getting attacked by vicious dogs (never a cat though) and it never occurred to me to sue or take anything further even one did scratch me. I just dumped there leaflets outside in future.

They will not take action against you for this one off incident, especially from a cat.

There are a number of different options you can take to ensure it doesn't happen again. You won't even have to buy any plasters! If you see the postman in the next few days, perhaps have a chat and apologise.

Thats really all there is to it!

This.

give over. It’s not his fault

JudgeAnderson · 11/08/2023 12:12

The vet said he should still be treated as fleas can be brought in the house via human's clothes etc

How profitable for the vet. Honestly I think you should weigh up the likelihood of bringing in fleas on your clothing, which is probably very low, vs treating your pet with something that does have a level of toxicity/risk of side effects.

🙄

Well hopefully he's learnt his lesson. You don't know whats on the otherside. Good job it wasn't a rottweiler

A & E Now!!!

(oh no that’s not right)

POLICE NOW!!!

(no, that’s not right either)

111 NOW!!!

Hmm or maybe PPs need to get a bloody grip (see what I did there 🤣) A cat scratched his fingers, a flaming tiger didn’t rip his arm off. I can’t believe some of the replies on here - an ‘emergency’, ‘helping the victim’ etc etc. How on earth do you get through the day with all the drama? I hope you never witness a real emergency…

He’s a postman, he got scratched, he probably thought no more about it.
OP relax and get back to work!

Yes I should have stopped call and gone out but I froze and didn't know what to do /in shock. Yes I didn't the wrong thing and should have gone out but I can't turn back time and now I'm wondering what to do to fix this. I do suffer from social anxiety and confrontation (plus he looked angry so I didn't want a fight with no witnesses) so maybe that held me back but I know that isn't an excuse in this situation.

Oh just stop.
I'm sick of this being trotted out as an excuse for all kinds of behaviour, seriously.

rainbowsweets · 11/08/2023 14:42

@Mookie81 I did say it isn't an excuse, I'm just explaining why I froze because some people here don't seem to understand at all why I didn't immediately go outside. But thanks.

I agree with @Mookie81, I'm afraid. Excusing not opening the door to an injured postman by claiming social anxiety is just plain ridiculous. You admitted earlier that you stayed on your work call?

Yes, I had about 2 seconds to decide about my work call and whether to run outside. I froze and was processing what had happened, but I admit in that moment, I was worried about confrontation, both from a potential argument from the postie and from the awkwardness of having to tell my colleagues why I was suddenly ducking out when I was contributing to a discussion. My manager would not have been impressed as the call involved some senior partners.

I don't know why I keep having to justify this when I can't turn back time. Seems everyone wants to give me a kicking when I was asking about what to do now, not what I should have done then.

Nonbio46 · 11/08/2023 14:57

Crikey. You’d think the op had a pet lion that had ripped the postie’s arm off. 🙄

3dogsandarabbit · 11/08/2023 15:41

Can't believe some of the vitriolic responses on here, honestly! OP try not to worry. If he was that badly hurt that he couldn't deliver the rest of the post, they would have got a post van to pick him up. Next time you see him apologize and let him know that you have bought a wire basket for the post.

FeigningConcern · 11/08/2023 15:54

Pop into your local sorting office and ask to speak to the manager.

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/08/2023 15:58

luckylavender · 11/08/2023 13:27

I don't really understand. So you went to the door, saw the postman's bloody hand, then didn't ask if he was ok? That's shocking.

If you read the OP's posts you'll understand. It's why there is an option to see all of the OP's posts.

She saw out of the window, having seen cat attached to letterbox, whilst on a work call. In the time it took to process what had happened and knowing she's not allowed to quit the call for much less than a house fire/alien invasion, the postie had buggered off anyway.

Not shocking, pretty normal stuff really!

watcherintherye · 11/08/2023 16:10

Theunamedcat · 11/08/2023 11:00

Get a wire basket thingy a bag will just seem like a game to the cat

Yes, I was just thinking if my cat saw something scrabbling about in a bag, he’d go for it. They’re hard wired to pounce on anything moving. I can imagine fingers through a letterbox would have been too much to resist. Maybe the postman is a cat owner and will understand?

Ffs, it's not "pretty normal stuff". At least, it may be to you, but not to the wider community, I don't think.

I technically should not have even left my desk during the work call, wfh doesn't mean I can do household things and slot work in, it means I have to be as I am in the office.

This is bonkers. Of course you can leave your desk in an emergency. This is not 'household things'. Do you have no empathy? From reading this all you are worried about is repercussions for yourself.
