Cat has hurt the postman - help!

Apologies as I have already posted this to the litter tray but I need quick advice as in a bit of a state right now.

I heard a bit of a commotion when the post was delivered this morning. I found the cat hanging on to the letterbox, and looked outside to see the postman with a bloody hand. So the cat scratched/attacked him when he was putting the letter through.

I couldn't go out as I was on a work call, but I feel very guilty and worried. I feel bad for him, but I don't know what to do - do I call RM and apologise?

Could I be in trouble for the cat's actions? Or can the cat be in trouble or PTS for being vicious?

I will have to lock him away from the door every morning I suppose (if they don't cancel the delivery) as I don't think a cage will fit on the door to shield the letters.

Advice appreciated.

Ffs, it's not "pretty normal stuff". At least, it may be to you, but not to the wider community, I don't think.

It was a very minor domestic incident. As a pp said, the postie wasn't staggering around with his arm hanging off.

@Cowlover89

give over. It’s not his fault

Actually it is... no part of his body is allowed to enter OPs homes, they are taught this when hired.

If he can not follow the safety rules set out by his employer thats entirely on him.

oakleaffy · 11/08/2023 16:41

@rainbowsweets I heard a scream of anguish from a postwoman once, thought her fingers had been trapped by letterbox.
I rushed over, but it was a really nasty dog- a Golden Retreiver that had grabbed hold of her fingers and pulled her hand in

Those wretched brush things people install caused her to have to push the letter through

The dog was silently waiting.

The wounds were deep- pearly bone visible- we gave first aid, washing bite with soap and water and a neighbour took her straight to casualty.

As the mutt was Inside the owners front door, nothing could be done in terms of postwoman getting compensation.
Postlady needed surgery and physio for her hand.

The postman will need antibiotics for a cat bite - Cat bites carry some nasty infections- but doubt you will legally held responsible.

Well done on getting a guard so Tiddles can’t be there in wait like the rogue Golden Retriever.
( Every dog the owner had was aggressive???)

Ohpleeeease · 11/08/2023 16:46

Can you look out for the postie tomorrow, apologise to him in person and ask how he is? Maybe explain what you’re doing to ensure it can’t happen again. I should think showing genuine concern would go a long way towards fixing things.

larkstar · 11/08/2023 16:53

Was your cat in search of a "scratching post"?

A & E Now!!!

(oh no that’s not right)

POLICE NOW!!!

(no, that’s not right either)

111 NOW!!!

Hmm or maybe PPs need to get a bloody grip (see what I did there 🤣) A cat scratched his fingers, a flaming tiger didn’t rip his arm off. I can’t believe some of the replies on here - an ‘emergency’, ‘helping the victim’ etc etc. How on earth do you get through the day with all the drama? I hope you never witness a real emergency…

He’s a postman, he got scratched, he probably thought no more about it.
OP relax and get back to work!

Someone who it’s common sense . I have one of these wild 4 pubs pet cats . A few years ago decided to run after 2 horses , the riders were a bit shocked but after I apologised and took the cat inside , had a proper lol about it . Turns out in all of their years owning and riding horse they had never seen a cat so annoyed someone crossed their drive .

You don't think its normal to freeze for a second when doing one priority thing and another priority thing occurs and you're processing everything in the space of a few seconds and by the time you have, one of the events has gone/stopped/no longer needs your attention?

You've never had two things happen at the same time which conflict?

Impressive!

VimtoVimto · 11/08/2023 18:09

Are you sure your cat caused the injury. It would have had to have been standing in wait for the postman. Our cat is fascinated by anything coming through the letterbox but doesn’t usually get there until until whatever it is, is on the doormat or hanging from the letterbox. Could the postman have hurt his hand on a letterbox (not necessarily yours)

Thatbloodyhedge · 11/08/2023 18:12

This thread is bonkers
It's a cat
Nobody died
Talk of insurance etc
Fucks sake

Bethanbee · 11/08/2023 18:25

I have been scratched by cats more than once over the years. I have never even mentioned it to anyone nevermind complained to the owner or tried to sue. It'll be fine. Do not worry.

Screamingabdabz · 11/08/2023 18:58

I’m literally aghast at people minimising this. If I was unexpectedly scratched, hurt and made to bleed by something vicious and volatile in the course of my everyday employment I would be shaken. This is without factoring into any potential infections or after effects.

Cats and their fan club really are vile.

SoCentralRain · 11/08/2023 19:00

You'd be shaken? Dear God in heaven, get a grip.

Where you shaking and crying while you wrote that?

QueueEtwo · 11/08/2023 19:29

Honestly I'm a cat lover, I have 2!

My neighbours cat bit me once resulted in an overnight stay in hospital on intravenous antibiotics!

My own cat bit my shin when I trapped her tail in the toilet seat, I had a skin graft & have been left with a very ugly hole in my leg!

You really can't just shrug about a cat bite!

But on a lighter note, I once had a letter from Royal Mail to say my dog had bit the postman, and I needed to secure it! I didn't have a dog!

I phoned the number on the letter to say, I had a cat not a dog & the guy just laughed & said that would teach him for putting his fingers through the letter box!

Get yourself a first aid kit OP & just ask the postman if he's ok the next time you see him!

SoCentralRain · 11/08/2023 10:46

I thought postmen/women were told not to put their actual hands in the letterbox in case a dog or cat in this instance was on the other side? I appreciate that’s hard to do with some of those fluffy letterboxes.

Hopefully he’ll put a plaster on and think no more about it.

Maybe get one of those cage things for inside the door so it doesn’t happen again?

Same type of lessons when I did the booklet type things, they gave us plastic rulers the 30cm ones where you fold the booklet over it and push it though. Much safer than risking dog or cats

Its NOT in the course of everyday employment. They are NOT allowed to put their hands in people houses SPECIFICALLY for this reason. If he goes to his boss he is admitting he did his job wrong. OPs pet is secure within the bounds of her own house. I imagine you would be one of those ridiculous people who try to sue the shredder company because at work you where stupid enough to shove your finger in it.

DepartureLounge · 11/08/2023 11:55

Oh god, so much drama! OP is not "appalling" to have continued a work call and the postman won't die of sepsis because a cat scratched him ffs. I expect he'll go home, put a plaster on and resolve not to put his hands through letterboxes in future, which is probably something he's trained not to do in any case. Anyone who would really go to their local sorting office with "tea, coffee and biscuits" has way too much time on their hands. Just get some kind of box or basket for your post and move on, OP - and get off mumsnet, you're supposed to be working!

This!!
The hysteria on this thread, wow 😂 peak mumsnet.
Out of control animal, for gods sake 😂

questionersquestion · 11/08/2023 20:30

A bite isn't a 'scratch' though!.

It's not just that cats harbour a multitude of nasties in their mouths, it's also that cats teeth are very sharp and thin (almost like a needle), and the puncture wounds heal over very fast, meaning the germs are sealed into the skin and are almost impossible to clean.

My cat is very docile, except when I used to giver her worming tablets. Then she turned feral, even with DH holding her wrapped in a blanket, she still managed to bite my thumbnail.

It seemed a trivial injury, but I'd been bitten before by her, on the hand, and needed treatment when it turned nasty.

Went to minor injuries. Nurse was bemused and thought a simple clean would suffice, but after talking to the doctor, I was given intravenous antibiotics, then sent up to the plastics ward to have my entire thumbnail removed.

I’m trying, and failing, to picture the scene!

rainbowsweets · 11/08/2023 20:40

@questionersquestion I'm 99% sure it wasn't a bite, the cat would not be have been able to get up high enough to bite. It would have been scratches.

Worlds gone mad
Postman gets scratched
Boo hoo
The end 🤦‍♀️

LuvSmallDogs · 11/08/2023 21:29

A cat doesn't have to bite to draw a impressive amount of blood, enough for OP to notice from inside. My family used to have a cat who lived semi-ferally and barely tolerated us, let alone others. She never bit, but used her claws to make a bloody mess of several vet's hands, the last time when she was old and dying!
