To not understand where people park overnight (when getting a train)?

We just moved from a city to a village a few weeks ago. (Cue "you're not in Kansas anymore" stupidity on our part...)

We're a 15min drive from the nearest mainline station (Moreton-in-Marsh, if it helps).

All good, but we have a 3-day trip to London coming up - and now we're wondering... errmm... what do we do with the car?? We're so used to just walking to the station or getting an Uber, this didn't even cross our minds until today.

If you live a drive away from a train station - how do you normally navigate it if you're going away for a night or longer?

Can you leave a car at a station for a few days? Or is that a terrible idea / not allowed?

Do you normally just pre-book a taxi instead? We've been quoted £60 round-trip by local firms! (Double what the return train tickets cost!) 😮

We've tried JustPark, but nothing comes up.

There are two buses per day to the station (lol) - but the timings are hours away from our booked train times. And we don't know if these buses are real buses or the mythical fabricated village buses that people talk about on here.

Are we missing something? (Aside from braincells...)

TLDR - What the flip do people do with their cars when they drive to a train station and are going to be away for a few nights?

What sort of car park does the train station have? Is it ticketed?

Our local train station car park has paid for, ticketed parking you book online and it costs about £20 for a long weekend

The station near my parents isn’t ticketed and is very quiet, people just leave their cars there until they get back. There is always plenty of room

supermamio · 10/08/2023 20:29

Is there no ubers in your area?

AlisonDonut · 10/08/2023 20:30

The train station car park.

CornishGem1975 · 10/08/2023 20:31

I just leave it in the station car park or get an Uber

cherryassam · 10/08/2023 20:31

I just checked and Moreton in Marsh has a car park - £4.50 daily rate during the week and £3.20 at the weekend. Just park at the station, the car park is open 24 hours

ShadowPuppets · 10/08/2023 20:32

Streets nearby? But usually train stations have long stay options.

bebecupoftea · 10/08/2023 20:32

Just pay 3 x days parking surely? It's £4.50 a day according to the website and you can pay online www.apcoa.co.uk/parking-in/moreton-in-marsh/moreton-in-marsh-station/

unlikelychump · 10/08/2023 20:32

Park at the station.

CMOTDibbler · 10/08/2023 20:33

You just park at the station. We're on the same line further up, and our car park is even free, but yours you just pay on the app for however many days

CMOTDibbler · 10/08/2023 20:34

BTW, LOL at the Uber suggestions. We can't even get a taxi reliably, def no Uber round here

ScarlettSunset · 10/08/2023 20:35

People park at the train station in my town for days at a time. Sometimes all week. .I personally tend to use a taxi though as it's cheaper than paying for more than a day of parking here.
I assumed most stations had a car park which allow parking for over 24 hours (at an inflated price!)

Can you not pre-book a local one? Appreciate it may just be the ONE taxi driver. Alternatively ask around and see if you can pay someone to do it.
I used to live/work somewhere with no Uber, minimum wait for a taxi an hour... I was once left stranded for 3 hours! Pre-booking was ok though.

I still wouldn't leave my car on side streets/open air car parks.

User1755387908 · 10/08/2023 20:41

We just use the station carpark as the one we generally use is 12 miles away

ManuelBensonsLeftBoot · 10/08/2023 20:46

We are in a totally different area but we are 8 miles from the closest rural station.
When I had a long weekend away last year I parked on a residential street about a 10 minute walk from the station. Parking is free, unrestricted and I chose a street that has lots of spaces. I also made sure it wasn't in one of the streets nearest the station so the residents are unlikely to get daily commuters using their regularly.

Kweeky · 10/08/2023 20:50

I think trains should be usable from a train port, like an airport - so build it next to a motorway with safe parking like an airport. My nearest stations 8 and 15 miles away, have pubs nearby, and there is a risk idiots could damage cars.
So I park in a 'nice' part of town at the side of the road and walk to the car park if I'm going away for any length of time.

ReviewingTheSituation · 10/08/2023 20:52

Park at the station or get a taxi/uber. Parking is £7.50 a day, so if we're any longer than 2 days, uber works out better.

Station parking is typically quite annoying as they generally charge by calendar day, not by 24hr period. So if you leave in the afternoon on day 1 and come back on the morning of day 2, you have to pay for 2 days parking despite being gone less than 24hrs.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/08/2023 20:54

We park at the station. Ours is only £1 per day.

Mariposa26 · 10/08/2023 20:54

Why are people saying get an Uber?! They don’t exist in rural areas!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 10/08/2023 20:57

Loads of places to park in Moreton a few minutes walk from the station.

They do in some! I live in a small village (300 people), very much a rural place (I can see fields from my windows, it's farmland all around), but there are Ubers in the local town that will come out this way.
Moreton in Marsh may not be quite close enough to a significant town that Uber drivers will venture that far, but it's certainly not the case that Uber isn't available in rural locations.

Just2MoreSeasons · 10/08/2023 21:15

Well this is interesting. I also live 15 mins to Moreton in Marsh train station! Wonder if we're in the same village!!
When I'm away by train over the weekend I just park in one of the free car parking spaces by Tesco/the chip shop.
Or suck it up and pay for the car park.
Just don't leave it in the high street on market day or you'll be buggered!

CherryCokeFanatic · 10/08/2023 21:17

Get one of the foldaway commuter cars and take it on the train with you

Marwoodsbigbreak · 10/08/2023 21:31

I just park in a residential road near the station.

If there are parking restrictions for miles around then I would use a paid car park.

Maraudingmarauders · 10/08/2023 21:39

Moreton in Marsh Station is in the village - park on a little side street and catch the train, or pay for three days' parking at the station.
