To not understand where people park overnight (when getting a train)?

We just moved from a city to a village a few weeks ago. (Cue "you're not in Kansas anymore" stupidity on our part...)

We're a 15min drive from the nearest mainline station (Moreton-in-Marsh, if it helps).

All good, but we have a 3-day trip to London coming up - and now we're wondering... errmm... what do we do with the car?? We're so used to just walking to the station or getting an Uber, this didn't even cross our minds until today.

If you live a drive away from a train station - how do you normally navigate it if you're going away for a night or longer?

Can you leave a car at a station for a few days? Or is that a terrible idea / not allowed?

Do you normally just pre-book a taxi instead? We've been quoted £60 round-trip by local firms! (Double what the return train tickets cost!) 😮

We've tried JustPark, but nothing comes up.

There are two buses per day to the station (lol) - but the timings are hours away from our booked train times. And we don't know if these buses are real buses or the mythical fabricated village buses that people talk about on here.

Are we missing something? (Aside from braincells...)

TLDR - What the flip do people do with their cars when they drive to a train station and are going to be away for a few nights?

Another thought. Are there any houses with driveways near the station? Some people let them out (booked via just park etc) and that can be cheaper than parking at the station and may only be a few minutes walk extra

Sheranovermytoes · 10/08/2023 21:57

I'd just park on a street for a few days.

ScarlettSunset · 10/08/2023 21:58

Sorry, just spotted that you tried just park.

saraclara · 10/08/2023 22:01

I love it when people think that everyone can get an uber! I'm not even super rural (pop apx 15,000 with adjoining town similar) and commuterland. No uber.

Yellowlegobrick · 10/08/2023 22:03

Id leave it in the station car park. Or compare the cost of that vs taxis to/from station and go for cheaper option.

Augend23 · 10/08/2023 22:08

I quite often go to a further away station (5 miles rather than 2) because it has free parking. Usually only if I have a suitcase because I cycle to the nearer one.

Sheranovermytoes · 10/08/2023 22:10

Loads of free parking round the corner on Fosse Way and Corder Lane.

Paq · 10/08/2023 22:13

We ask friends for lifts and offer lifts in return.

Blossomtoes · 10/08/2023 22:17

We use taxis to and from the station. It’s cheaper than several days parking.

NerrSnerr · 10/08/2023 22:18

I'd just park on a local road in Moreton. I live in Gloucestershire, only a couple of miles away from Gloucester and getting a taxi even though I'm a couple of miles from the city is still a nightmare sometimes.

When I lived in Cirencester I tried to get a taxi home from Kemble on a Sunday evening and I had to wait for the taxi driver to finish his game of bingo first.

The OP has been quoted £60 for the round trip.

Look whether the station has long term parking and what it costs. Say for example this…https://www.apcoa.co.uk/parking-in/moreton-in-marsh/moreton-in-marsh-station/

There you go OP, week long parking for 22.50, that’s a bit of a bargain tbh!

You just park at the station. We're on the same line further up, and our car park is even free, but yours you just pay on the app for however many days

This is what we do, drive further to get free parking/safer parking. Closest train station is about 30 miles away but we drive to one about 100 miles away and park for free in their cctv car park.

is there no uber I do love reading posts with functionning transport links. Rural life i love but better transport is a dream.

  • Just Park (rent a space on a driveway) - our preferred choice as we have a preferred driveway near our station.
  • Station car park (ours has a 24hr rate)
  • Taxi to/from the station
  • Lift from friends/family

Take a look at nearby main stations for their parking options too. You're driving anyway.

This, it's really not rocket science is it?

JustLookingThanks · 10/08/2023 22:36

There's a car park outside the station on Google maps, if you click the P on the map it takes you here - https://www.apcoa.co.uk/parking-in/moreton-in-marsh/
If click on the buy ticket it takes you here
https://www.apcoa.co.uk/parking-in/moreton-in-marsh/moreton-in-marsh-station/
The web page says you can pay by App, there is a link to the App, and the location code for the station car park. That means you can buy a ticket and top up the next day for another all day ticket using the App. Just put a reminder on your phone. You could buy a weekly ticket which is easier than topping up each day.
Monday - Friday
Daily Rate: £4.50
Saturday - Sunday
Daily Rate: £3.20
Weekly Ticket Rate
£22.50

I used to get a taxi as we lived fairly close, I would park in the long stay car park at the station now I'm a bit further away, cheaper than a taxi.

For a day trip there are cheaper car parks but for a weekend I'd pay a bit more for extra security.

littlefireseverywhere · 10/08/2023 22:47

We lI’m be fairly locally to you too, we use the station car park & just pay or one of the free spots in town & just walk to the station.

Not much has changed at Kemble, NerrSnerr. And the bus usually gets to the station about five minutes after the train you wanted to catch left.

I just cough up for the parking now, especially as we have a massive new second car park for Kemble on the village side. Which, of course, is always empty since covid, after which everyone stopped going to London all week. Brilliant timing!

JaukiVexnoydi · 10/08/2023 23:25

Train station car parks are fine. They have cctv. You can leave your car there for days for much cheaper than a taxi fare.

Not for us it isn’t. Our station car park is extortionate.

Smidge001 · 10/08/2023 23:30

Eerrr...Just park at the station. That's what the carpark is there for!

Cornishclio · 10/08/2023 23:32

Long term car park or nearby streets or taxi

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 10/08/2023 23:33

We live walking distance from a station but sometimes travel from a further away one if connections aren’t great. Either cost parking at the station - can be expensive but often feels most secure. Scope out parking near by either cheaper car park or on street. Cadge a lift?

Weirdly, we are in No-Uber land too but can get them home from our nearest “big” stations just can’t get picked up from home.
