Cyclists who act like they own the road should pay towards it

So cyclists get priority on the roads, and are happy to ride two abreast so they hold all the car traffic up. Shouldnt they at least pay towards the upkeep of the road?

No cyclists use the expensive cycle path paid down for them here, they prefer to hold up the traffic riding on a narrow ,curving road which makes it dangerous for them and does have the possibility of causing delays and accidents.
If they refuse to use the cycle paths perhaps they should be stopped and advised but, cycling is the only way many people can get around with the col crisis and they should not be forced to pay tax and mot.

I don’t know any cyclists that want to ride purposely in front of cars at traffic light 🚦 so possibly I don’t know any dick cyclists then 🤷‍♀️

Come to the junction at Chancery Lane any weekday and watch pretty much every cyclist bomb it through the red lights and nearly wipe out the pedestrians on the crossing. Bonus points for them not using the specially built kerbed cycle lane that meant the bus stop were removed.

MMIL

middle aged men in Lycra, think they're competing in the TDF riding recklessly on our already overcrowded roads. Ignoring basic Highway Code.

Bloody nuisance the lot of them.

The roads wouldn't be overcrowded if everyone cycled or took public transport.

MikeRafone · 10/08/2023 11:39

Actually, cyclists on pavements are more likely to kill.

how many cyclists killed people on pavements last year?

motorists average 40 killed each year on pavements

What's that as a proportion of cyclists/drivers, and as a proportion of total distance travelled by each or time spent travelling.

Raw data is useless if not put into context.

Kills per cyclist could well be higher than kills per motorist - without knowing the totals, raw data figures have no use.

Maybe not, but buses, pavements, cycle tracks certainly would be if all the people travelling in cars suddenly walked, cycled or took the bus instead!

Beetleback · 10/08/2023 12:11

Cycling isn't a legitimate form of transport in the UK and shouldn't be seen as one. There is absolutely 💯 no reason for anybody to cycle on a road

Hahaha OK 😂

Most of the journeys I make my bike replace a journey I’d have otherwise have made by car, causing congestion, pollution and using up non-renewable resources. But guess that’s not a good enough reason for you?

if you’re got 41 dead people killed, one by a cyclists and 40 by motorists- do you really think the families care how many miles everyone is travelling? Most families want to then prevent others from facing the same fate.

Riding in gangs of ten or twenty on narrow (think Yorkshire Dales) roads is not only ill -mannered but downright dangerous. They should pay not least for the lost revenue of people trying to go about their business.
I assume that they are the same
people who when driving a car push in, hoot loudly and generally behave ignorantly then as well ☹️

Same here in the Peak District

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/08/2023 12:19

Umm, I own neither a bike or a car but somehow my taxes still pay for roads - where's MY rebate OP?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/08/2023 12:21

Have you tried catching a Pennine Express train? I’d bloody love to use public transport, but it hardly exists outside London. The bus services in my city have just been halved. There are more cars on the road in the North of England than the south. Because the north has crap public transport.

They should definitely have insurance

Many cyclists do have insurance. I do, it costs about £12 a year. But the reality is that mandatory insurance would only work alongside mandatory licensing and registration, which is almost impossible to administer. Cars are owned by adults, generally change hands infrequently, and can be comprehensively licensed, whereas many bicycles are owned by children and are often lent and passed on to siblings and friends. Of the most dangerous cyclists I see every day in London, I’d say a significant proportion of them are teenage boys. Your teenager’s friend, who has bicycle insurance, lets your teenager, who doesn’t, ride their bicycle. Because teenagers do dumb stuff. Your kid then causes damage or injures a pedestrian. Property owner or pedestrian wants to sue, and has an expectation that because your kid was riding a bicycle, and bicycle insurance is now mandatory, that they have insurance which will pay out. Do you really want that legal headache on your hands?

Frabbits · 10/08/2023 12:23

Fraaahnces · 10/08/2023 11:39

I actually agree that bikes should be registered. Obviously shouldn’t cost anywhere near as much as a car, but they should have a registration number visible so they can be reported for antisocial behaviour. (Videoed by witnesses is ideal). It would also make the bike trackable for some time if it’s nicked. Just like with car taxes, theirs should go towards road and cycle path maintenance.

Do you think people in general should be registered and have to walk around with that number on their t-shirts the whole time too?

Glittertwins · 10/08/2023 12:24

I do pay for it via our cars. It's called VED - vehicle emissions duty.

Boomboom22 · 10/08/2023 12:26

I have never seen a car jump a red-light o ly Amber.
2 abreast surely can't be safer as even fully over on the other side of the road there wouldn't be 2m clearance so it's illegal to overtake unless the road is a super wide a road.

People walking down the street cannot crash into someone and cause an accident. So...no.

MikeRafone · 10/08/2023 12:03

a 3 lane road each way with a maximum speed of 70mph is comparable to a 20mph road with houses each side and pedestrians crossing is not comparable.

if though you want to be prisoners in cars then ban the bicycle

There are other roads besides 20mph zones. NSL roads are 60mph, practically motorway speed, your point doesn't really make sense.

dreamingofsun · 10/08/2023 10:21

So what does the £180 ish i give a year go on Bingbang?

It is an emissions tax.

Many cars don't pay Vehicle Excise Duty (often called road tax) as they are low emissions. Should they be allowed on the road?

Cargo bikes can carry lots of things

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes but thanks for the tip

DataColour · 10/08/2023 12:32

Just come back from a French city and seen how seamlessly pedestrians, cyclists and motorists use the road without aggression. Motorists stopping their vehicles at the slightest hint of a pedestrian crossing the road or a cyclist cycling through (cycle paths weaving through the main roads), motorists patiently waiting, is unbelievable. You almost don't even have to look at the road when walking or cycling as the cars just stop for you.
Depressing to come back to England where cycling is so disrespected.

You can walk down the street and stab someone. What's to stop them without registration plates?

Noodlewave · 10/08/2023 12:35

We definitely need registering and visible identification of every cyclist on the road. The only country in the world that has this is North Korea and it's high time we joined them on this and many other of their excellent policies.

Should I strap my ladder to the back of my bike?

it’s always amazed me how my local window cleaner carries his ladder but he does it like this chap & has done for years

Lol, I'm not a fucking Chuckle Brother 😂
