Cyclists who act like they own the road should pay towards it

So cyclists get priority on the roads, and are happy to ride two abreast so they hold all the car traffic up. Shouldnt they at least pay towards the upkeep of the road?

Theyareonlynoodkes, if I had a pound for every driver I see jump red lights on my cycle commute, I'd have enough to buy a tesla, oh and a car jumping a red light is more likely to kill

The difference is, the driver is licensed and registered and when eventually picked up by camera, will be penalised.

There is no incentive for a cyclist to obey the rules of the road.

And there have been several accidents including fatal in London by people being hit by cyclists. I will also extend that to people om e-scooters.

Actually, cyclists on pavements are more likely to kill.

@Untrained a lot of cyclists carry cameras and report close passes, this can result in points in licence or loss of driving licence, depending how many points the driver already holds.

unlike speed cameras there is no sat nav warning, so any cyclist may have them running and film any illegal driving. Best for all drivers to avoid doing anything illegal around cyclists.

lically a driver caught another driver close passing a cyclist and used the op snap to report - so it’s not just cyclists but other drivers with dashcam

Yet another reason to have bicycles banned from the roads.

Fraaahnces · 10/08/2023 11:39

I actually agree that bikes should be registered. Obviously shouldn’t cost anywhere near as much as a car, but they should have a registration number visible so they can be reported for antisocial behaviour. (Videoed by witnesses is ideal). It would also make the bike trackable for some time if it’s nicked. Just like with car taxes, theirs should go towards road and cycle path maintenance.

how many cyclists killed people on pavements last year?

motorists average 40 killed each year on pavements

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 10/08/2023 11:40

No I don't as they're not polluting the air or causing damage to roads or bridges, and we should incentivize everyone to cycle.

MikeRafone · 10/08/2023 11:40

how would that stop dashcam reporting on motorways etc?

HardieHa · 10/08/2023 11:40

They do, roads are paid for out of general taxation.

Sigmama · 10/08/2023 11:41

Onefinemess, your outlandish posts, banning bikes etc, I'm guessing your user name is a reference to your comedic intentions

Doveyouknow · 10/08/2023 11:41

I do pay for roads as a tax payer (unless there is some tax exemption for cyclists that I have missed). More to the point most cyclist I know own cars and pay the associated taxes. They just choose to use cycling for shorter journeys because it's often quicker, you get some exercise and it's better for the environment (and as a bonus for you it's one less car on the road adding to the queue traffic you will have to sit in when you drive).

MMIL

middle aged men in Lycra, think they're competing in the TDF riding recklessly on our already overcrowded roads. Ignoring basic Highway Code.

Bloody nuisance the lot of them.

MAMILs have been very rude to me as a slowish cycler on a simple bike! Still don't think they should pay road tax though even though they're annoying, they'd be just as annoying when driving their 4x4s that a lot of them probably also own

MikeRafone · 10/08/2023 11:42

@Fraaahnces government disagrees with your opinion, it was petitioned for bicycle registration and the reasoning why it wouldn’t be taken was given

Fraaahnces · 10/08/2023 11:51

Governments are known to change their tiny collective minds when enough people push for change.

Just want to pipe up that I do use bikes - recreationally mostly for family bike rides - I am not anti-cyclist, I am anti dickhead!

I don’t think 10,000 people was even enough to get it debated. It’s around 100000 to get a debate in parliament.

I don’t know any cyclists that want to ride purposely in front of cars at traffic light 🚦 so possibly I don’t know any dick cyclists then 🤷‍♀️

What is outlandish about it?

We don't allow people to walk or cycle on train tracks because we know it's dangerous.

Cycling clubs, where a bunch of riders use the public road for their hobby is completely unacceptable. Those riders aren't going anywhere, they are not commuting or travelling, they are just arrogant and entitled and think that they have the right to use a public road to play their hobby on. Absolutely no excuses for that kind of entitled behaviour.

And roads are dangerous places, we should not allow pedestrians or Ego Tripping cyclists to use them. They create hazards by their presence on the road.

If you think I'm wrong then please explain why we don't allow cyclists or pedestrians on motorways?

You know what the answer is. And the same apples for any road.

HTH

MikeRafone · 10/08/2023 12:03

a 3 lane road each way with a maximum speed of 70mph is comparable to a 20mph road with houses each side and pedestrians crossing is not comparable.

if though you want to be prisoners in cars then ban the bicycle

dreamingofsun · 10/08/2023 10:34

Timefortea- no i wouldnt have overtaken a car on the same stretch, but the car wouldnt have been going so slowly and holding so much traffic up for such a long distance

Then you shouldn't have been overtaking a bike either.

The cyclists were in the right cycling two abreast, cars would have been more likely to safely overtake than if they'd been single file.

This really was an epic fail of a post wasn't it.
