Cyclists who act like they own the road should pay towards it

So cyclists get priority on the roads, and are happy to ride two abreast so they hold all the car traffic up. Shouldnt they at least pay towards the upkeep of the road?

Do I get to complain about the cars I get stuck behind?

The sooner we move to car-free living, the better our society will be.

Your bicycle is faster than a car?

Don't think so.

Can you cycle 60mph?

TeresaCrowd · 15/08/2023 08:19

@onefinemess and what? If I look at all my driving miles, I can guarantee to you that more time has been lost sitting behind a lorry doing 56.1 overtaking a lorry doing 55.9 on dual carriageways, that I have lost in total having to wait to overtake a cyclist. Hell it’s not even just lorries now, There is a massive group of people who will only do 45 in a 60 and they are much harder to overtake than a bike doing 15 as the pass time is much longer and needs more clear road. Are those people selfish too or as they are in a motorised vehicle do you not care?

If you drive a car you are more selfish than those who take the bus. All those cars cause massive tailbacks. The M1 and M25 back up in long queues of stop start traffic every single day. No bikes allowed there so what’s your selfishness claim on that one?

From the Highway Code, in Rules for Cyclists:

"on quiet roads or streets – if a faster vehicle comes up behind you, move to the left to enable them to overtake, if you can do so safely"

Funny how so many cyclists bleat on about motorists following the Highway Code, but then always ignore that nugget.

"If you can do so safely" being a key sentence there

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/08/2023 08:15

You know what causes most delays? Congestion, that is too many cars. You aren't stuck in traffic, you are traffic. Most of the issues car drivers have are caused by other car drivers.

We're talking about cyclists.

Try to keep up.

WellPlaced · 15/08/2023 08:20

Why don’t car drivers cycle or get a bus?

How about that for an idea?
Or are you just far too entitled and important for that?

Of course! But they still don't do it. I live rurally and regularly end up following a MAMIL for a fair distance on single track roads where there are safe passing places for them to pull in and let me pass. But do they? Absolutely not!

No. We’re talking about motorists and their attitudes to cyclists actually

How many cars do 60 mph in a traffic jam?

All of those selfish motorists, sat two abreast taking up the whole width of the lane even when they're the only ones in the vehicle...

Please come to Cumbria and try and get from my house to my office for 9am by bus. If you can manage it I'll give you £50.

DdraigGoch · 15/08/2023 08:17

Your car spews out particulate emissions (even if electric, tyre rubber can be nasty) that shortens the lives of the majority of road users. That's a fact.

Maybe you are OK with causing death to others, I just think that it's selfish.

And?

That's another reason why cyclists should stay off the roads, breathing in those particulate emissions is bad for them.

LolaSmiles · 15/08/2023 08:24

Badbadbunny
Poorly designed cycle infrastructure is a real problem.
There's some near me where it's safer and quicker to use the road than it is to use a poorly thought through shared use path, then stop at every pedestrian crossing, get off my bike, weave around the tight fenced crossing islands before the path disappears for cyclists leaving you stuck trying to get back on the road unless you're going directly to the one place that the rest of the track continues to.

The safer thing to do as an adult cyclist is to ride on the road.

Other areas near me have better off road cycle infrastructure. Even with pedestrian/cycle crossings they're not a pain to use. The cycle network in that area brings people out at sensible places to continue their ride on local minor roads.

I would, and many other cyclists would.

You have had negative experiences around this and many of the cyclists will have had negative experiences with motorists.

Well mention that to your friend @onefinemess who thinks that instead of just cycling to work I should get a bus when there isn't one or take up a scarce parking space in my village

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/08/2023 08:26

Here's the thing, just because you have a car it doesn't make you any more important than other road users.

No, that's a reason to ban your juggernaut from built-up areas, on account of the pollution affecting residents. The pollution is actually worse inside your car than outside it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/08/2023 08:26

Yes it does.

Roads are built for vehicles, therefore vehicles should have priority.

onefinemess · 15/08/2023 08:26

Yes, cars tend to do that.

Yes, it's very selfish to sit two-abreast when you're only occupying one seat anyway. Makes it more difficult for us cyclists to overtake. It also makes it difficult for pedestrians to get past when you've parked it on the pavement because it's too big for the road.

DdraigGoch · 15/08/2023 08:31

Roads were built for horses.

onefinemess · 15/08/2023 07:57

Depends on the circumstances. I've been delayed by selfish cyclists who are dawdling along at 10mph and can't be overtaken.

So you're wrong. Cyclists cause unnecessary delays to other people. It's selfish, entitled behaviour.

That's not about being a cyclist, that is just being an entitled human being.

I am often held up by slow pedestrians who dawdle along holding hands and won't move over or speed up.

I get held up by drivers doing 30 in a 60 limit who won't move over or speed up,

Anyway I was in London yesterday and can report that all the cyclists I saw stopped at red lights when they were supposed to.

How do you propose to get your shopping delivered?

Or produce to the shops you use?

Or workmen to fix things?

Or emergency services to help people?

Or taxis to take people places?

You think everyone can or even wants to cycle?

WellPlaced · 15/08/2023 08:32

@onefinemess is on a wind-up 😂

No-one can be that thick and selfish

enchantedsquirrelwood · 15/08/2023 08:32

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/08/2023 08:05

If we want to talk about inconvenience how about the inconvenience cars cause pedestrians?

That doesn't matter. See pavement parking for an example. In what world is that ok, excepting the housing estates where it's designed in?

BreehyHinnyBrinnyHoohyHah · 15/08/2023 08:34

onefinemess · 15/08/2023 08:27

Taxi?

Hahahaha hahahaha!

Spot the city dweller....

You have to book a taxi at least a week in advance where I live and even then you'll be lucky to get one.

And are you seriously suggesting that in order to reduce congestion and help cyclists that I swap my commute in a car for... another car????

Full disclosure here. I also cycle recreationally. I just think there are knobs in both groups. I've had narrow misses with both cars and bikes. A cyclist nearly hit my then 3 year old daughter going about 20-30mph straight over a zebra crossing. If I hadn't anticipated him being a bellend and yanked her out the way, he would have killed or seriously injured her.

I also think that there are an awful lot of naive people who think that amazing public transport exists everywhere.
