Tipping hairdresser after an expensive treatment.

Bubblegum22 · 10/08/2023 09:53

I’m getting hair extensions which will cost £550, Aibu to not tip or should I be tipping 10%, which seems to be standard? Or whats an acceptable amount in your opinion?

Maintenance is circa £200 every 2 months so tips will add up over the year (if I decide to keep them in that is).

I’m not sure what the protocol is these days with more expensive treatments so would appreciate some info on other people’s tipping etiquette/or not at the hairdressers, particularly for more expensive services.
Would be great if any hairdressers here could offer some guidance on what they’d expect.

Thank you.

I have never in my life tipped a hairdresser!!

Gnomegnomegnome · 10/08/2023 09:58

I always tip the hairdresser even if it’s £5-10.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 10/08/2023 09:58

I think when you’re in £500+ territory then percentage tips go out of the window-I’d be more likely to tip £20

Wishimaywishimight · 10/08/2023 10:01

I tip €5 no matter what I get done (although usually my cut / blow dry is €55 so near enough 10%). I refuse to get caught up in percentages. No way would I tip €55 for what you are having done!

MoonsHaunted · 10/08/2023 10:02

I’m a hairdresser and I NEVER expect a tip as I realise that it’s an expensive service in the first place. If someone tips it’s lovely, whether it’s £2 or £20, but no judgement if not.

SunRainStorm · 10/08/2023 10:02

We're meant to be tipping hairdressers?!

MoonsHaunted · 10/08/2023 10:03

Oh and I’d say only about 10% of people tip so it’s not standard around here (Scotland, if that makes a difference!)

RosesAndHellebores · 10/08/2023 10:04

£20. I always tip. My hairdresserbalways fits me in and the family were at the front of the queue for appointments post lockdown. My friends who don't tip had to wait 4-6 weeks.

Uncooperativefingers · 10/08/2023 10:05

In the UK I've never tip my hairdresser. Not noticed anyone else doing so either when I've been

Jitterybugs · 10/08/2023 10:06

I tip my hairdresser 25%. My dry cut is £12 and I round it up to £15 😃

Ohmylordnotagain · 10/08/2023 10:08

Many many hairdressers work their prices so they are on at least £30 an hour wages so no i dont tip.

Wishimaywishimight · 10/08/2023 10:09

@MoonsHaunted That's good to know! My hairdresser is absolutely lovely, I have been going to her for about 10 years now and have always tipped the same (although it's €10 at Christmas), good to know she (probably) doesn't think I'm a miser!

Wishimaywishimight · 10/08/2023 10:11

I'm in Ireland, everyone I know (many go to the same salon as I do) tips, some maybe €2, others more. My mother also likes to tip the hair washing person separately as they are likely on a pretty low wage.

Twoleftlegs · 10/08/2023 10:11

I go to a cheap salon and a luxe one.

I leave a tip at the cheaper one- her prices are low due to the area and clientele, usually old ladies having a rinse and set. It’s her business and I know things have been tough.

I don’t tip at the luxe one because I know for a fact that they are on a decent wage for the industry. But I am friendly with my hairdresser and will often bring her a coffee if I grab myself one.

pilates · 10/08/2023 10:11

I don’t think hairdressers are badly paid like they used to be so I wouldn’t worry about tipping. The prices they charge are pretty extortionate tbh.

Saschka · 10/08/2023 10:12

I know a lot of people do tip their hairdressers, and I always wonder how! No tips jar or anything, and when I go to pay the receptionist always just types in the amount and hands me the card reader. The hairdresser herself has moved onto the next customer. There’s never an opportunity to tip.

Are people holding onto a tenner during the cut, and pressing it into their hairdresser’s hand when they take the cape off?

KnottyKnitting · 10/08/2023 10:13

My last cut and blow dry ( 40mins) cost £67! A year ago I was charged £50 by the same hairdresser -not only do I not tip but I am finding another hairdresser!

SomersetBrie · 10/08/2023 10:15

I sometimes tip. I don't tip more if it's more expensive, I would more think of the time. So say £5 an hour, so I'd give more for a longer treatment.

I have also never tipped a hairdresser but I know people who do.

I know some people will order food/coffees for them and the hairdresser to have if it’s a long appt, maybe you could do that?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/08/2023 10:26

I never tip - and was also slotted in on day one after lockdown! My hairdresser owns the salon, and I see him religiously every five weeks so I am a good banker for him. I always buy him a gift at Christmas (bottle of something decent), when his partner had a baby a few years back got them a lovely present then, and brought champagne on the post lockdown opening day. He does okay, and at £70 a cut isn’t starving.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/08/2023 10:27

Sometimes I nip in for a fringe trim between cuts and bring him Percy Pigs then too!

Hillarious · 10/08/2023 10:29

My hairdresser told me to stop tipping him.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 10/08/2023 10:38

I don't tip as such, but I will usually say "keep the change". My hairdresser is self employed so if I pay cash its roughly a 30% tip anyway (if accounting for basic rate tax & NI). I'm not tipped for my job, I'm a business owner operator and set my prices for what I need to earn.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 10/08/2023 10:38

@Judystilldreamsofhorses Percy Pigs are a bloody brilliant tip! 😋
