Do any grown women genuinely speak with a high pitched baby voice?

As my next door neighbour speaks like this all the time (apart from when she's shouting at her kids).

This woman is nearly 50 and I wish I could record her so you could hear it. It goes up and down and it's like she's trying to imitate her 3yr old daughter.

I just really don't understand why you would speak like this. It cannot be natural.

Thankfully the sound proofing has dampened most of it when we are in the house but as the weather is reasonable today, they will be in the garden all day so I can hear it. 🫣

I have heard speaking in a childhood voice as an adult can be as a result of childhood trauma. There is more research needed in this area though.

TheGoddessFrigg · 10/08/2023 08:57

Yes, me 😒it doesnt suit my character at all. I think I sound like a female Charles Hawtrey.
I used to work with a woman who had the most fascinating husky baby style voice. She could have made 1000s from voice overs!

veryberrypericherry · 10/08/2023 09:16

I worked in a Primary School with a strange culture where 2/3 of the female teachers used to talk like this, sometimes to the parents and to each other. It was a real performance. The odd thing was that when they were addressing the children in their classes they were harsh and loud.

It's almost like they were over compensating. It was very odd.

The two main culprits of this used to see each other in the corridor or staff room and automatically lapse into this sickly sweet, almost lispy baby voice when they spoke to each other. But they could talk perfectly normally to the other teachers. It was so odd.

This is more common in the states ,european women tend to have deeper more normal sounding voices .

Nuffaluff · 10/08/2023 09:29

Do you mean she’s deliberately putting it on? Does it sound fake?
I have a naturally high pitched voice. My singing teacher said I have the highest pitched speaking voice she’s ever heard which made me laugh as, like everyone else, it sounds lower to me in my head when I’m speaking!
I can’t help it but I’m sure it’s annoying to some people. My mum’s voice is the same. I also have a natural ‘sing-song’ quality to my voice rather than speaking in a monotone.
I expect it also has other disadvantages where people don’t take me as seriously when I speak.
However, it suits me. I love singing and sing soprano. Singing a C6 (top C) with ease is a nice side effect.

Two stand out for me. My health visitor, who was at least in her 50s and someone I went to uni with (who subsequently had a very good job in insurance before giving up work to be a sahm so obviously didn’t impede career)

Scousemousey · 10/08/2023 09:33

Only sometimes when talking to the dog! My mum used to talk to the family dog the same and it would irritate me. Now I do it. 🙄

Anyone else thinking of Warren Jeffs/ Keep Sweet

Menopausehaver · 10/08/2023 09:35

Julie Burchill has a baby voice, which does not match her writing style at all.

Hahaha I came on to say Julie Burchill - beat me to it

KimberleyClark · 10/08/2023 09:39

I only speak like this when addressing dogs.

VeridicalVagabond · 10/08/2023 09:40

My former next door neighbour sounded almost exactly like Miss Piggy, it was bizarre, especially listening to her fighting with her husband (who sadly didn't sound like Kermit).

You haven't lived until you've heard Miss Piggy scream "pick up your own fucking underpants Jonathan" at ten million decibels.

Some people just have unusual voices I suppose. I can't imagine why you'd put it on when it's so universally annoying.

When I read this I realised I’d never heard her speak. Just watched a video, nothing like I imagined Shock

I have a relatively deep voice naturally and am a contralto singer, but it’s weirdly high when I speak to my cat. I sent a video to my friend recently and she didn’t realise the voice was me, she thought it was somebody minding him!

Ridemeginger · 10/08/2023 09:41

I've always interpreted this sort of put on voice as "handling" or manipulating. Not always in a bad way, but sometimes in a self preservation way. I've known a couple of women in unhappy relationships who would speak to their male partners in this way - a coaxing, gently, gently way of addressing them that seemed to be their way of smoothing over the impact of the words they were actually saying.

SlowlyLosing · 10/08/2023 09:42

Yes. I first heard it when she was doing a reading at a wedding and thought it was part of that (reading from a child's book) but nope that's her voice.

It is very much at odds with her appearance, must make life interesting.

Forgoodnesssakewhatnow · 10/08/2023 09:43

I have a friend with a voice like that. She’s a super strong, straight talking head teacher. It’s unusual but she manages to be incredibly direct, fair and highly respect-worthy with it.

Haha I came on to say the EXACT same! Had friends to stay recently and their 8 year old asked why I used a funny voice to talk to the dog Blush

neverbeenskiing · 10/08/2023 09:47

My MIL does this. The more demanding and selfish she is being, the more childlike her voice becomes.

Blossomtoes · 10/08/2023 09:49

Anyone remember Sandra Dickinson? She had the most artificial sounding voice but it was obviously real because nobody could keep that up constantly.

SmileyClare · 10/08/2023 09:51

I think there’s a difference between a voice that sounds childlike (high pitched) and an adult deliberately talking in a babyish tone.

My new neighbour talks in a very childish way- she whines at her 2 young children and argues immaturely with them . She often lapses into baby talk when addressing her partner eg Me want hugs

However she does have learning difficulties and autism.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 10/08/2023 09:52

I talk to my dog in that voice as I think that's how she would sound (yeah, bonkers I know!), but I hate the pathetic simpering voices used, mainly, on radio ads.

I came on to say this too. She's Georgia Tennant's mother, if I remember rightly !

Hoppinggreen · 10/08/2023 09:58

SIL does but she’s a bit of a wet lettuce anyway

Zwicky · 10/08/2023 09:59

Work colleague has a baby voice. Also a baby hairstyle and baby walk. The more cutting/unpleasant she is the more the baby quality piles up.
