Do any grown women genuinely speak with a high pitched baby voice?

As my next door neighbour speaks like this all the time (apart from when she's shouting at her kids).

This woman is nearly 50 and I wish I could record her so you could hear it. It goes up and down and it's like she's trying to imitate her 3yr old daughter.

I just really don't understand why you would speak like this. It cannot be natural.

Thankfully the sound proofing has dampened most of it when we are in the house but as the weather is reasonable today, they will be in the garden all day so I can hear it. 🫣

I have two voices. My normal is deep. My polite voice is higher pitched. I come from a culture where everyone goes a bit higher pitched when talking to others as it’s considered more polite

GalaApples · 10/08/2023 11:00

Cerys Matthews, Alex Jones?

PandorasBoxers · 10/08/2023 11:01

I did, and that would definitely fit with childhood trauma, but because of years of bullying and snide remarks I’ve not got a fake voice I mostly use.

the higher pitched voice was and is my normal. I also like pink things and was always considered girly but early 2000s culture was awful and hated girls

I have what some people call a baby voice. A lot of people have been nasty about it but most accept it and listen to the words I'm saying and respect me for them

I am autistic and have dystonia. Have wondered if these are linked.

My childhood wasn't traumatic

It's rarely a conscious choice but it is quite irritating to listen to.

Julie Burchill has a baby voice, which does not match her writing style at all.

Holy crap I've just watched a video of her being interviewed off the back of this comment - I've never heard her speak before. I am blown away!! In my head she has always sounded like Kathy Burke's Magda in AbFab.

Anyone remember Sandra Dickinson? She had the most artificial sounding voice but it was obviously real because nobody could keep that up constantly.

I was just about to join the thread to say this.

I think, IIRC, that the comedian Rita Rudner was also quite baby-voiced.

It's fascinating how the pitch of voices can alter the perception of what it said so much.
It brings to mind Elizabeth Holmes of the Theranos fraud and that bizarre deep voice she adopted.

I have heard speaking in a childhood voice as an adult can be as a result of childhood trauma. There is more research needed in this area though.

I heard this as well, it caused me to be less judgemental of women who speak like this.

SmileyClare · 10/08/2023 11:18

I always assumed Julie Burchill’s voice sounded strange due the insane amount of cocaine she has taken for years.

I know heavy ex users whose voice has been similarly affected and sounds quite squeaky, nasally and unnatural.

Beseen22 · 10/08/2023 11:21

I know a lady who would be in her 40s with 3 teenage daughters who speaks noticeably high pitched. We grew up in a church where women would be submissive to men and she would never have worked or worn trousers so I assumed it was maybe to appear more feminine? But maybe she couldn't help it.

One of best friends imitates the way her toddler speaks "my wants joooce mama" constantly and it makes my blood run cold everytime she does it. I love everything else about her but it makes me cringe so bad. The worst thing is that he's now 4 and his grammar is pretty good so I know he doesn't even speak like that now but she continues to do it everytime she speaks about him.

Two of the mums at our primary school had voices like this. Both were intelligent profesional women. Their voices were usually at the high end of 'normal', but when they talked to each other, they gradually got higher and higher and more and more baby-like - it was fascinating to hear!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 10/08/2023 12:01

I did know one person who had a 'baby' voice, but it wasn't put on, she just had a high pitched voice!

I cannot stand anyone putting on a voice. It's so obvious and really, really annoys me. Petty I know.

Anything like this?

I thought of this.

LoobyDop · 10/08/2023 12:24

My mum puts a special simpering baby voice on when she wants something, including sympathy. Annoys the hell out of me. I don’t know if it’s deliberate or subconscious, but I’m sure there are very few people it works on. Mum is also capable of bellowing like a sergeant major on other occasions.

Eucalyptus22 · 10/08/2023 15:14

This might be old news but Paris Hilton admits freely now that she was faking her baby voice. She says in interviews it was a character she played.

Florissante · 10/08/2023 15:17

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 10/08/2023 09:22

This is more common in the states ,european women tend to have deeper more normal sounding voices .

Good grief. What an idiotic assertion.

tt9 · 10/08/2023 15:22

I only put on my baby voice at appropriate junctures I.e. enquiring as to the identity of the good boy/ girl from a canine and occasionally when conversing with an infant (depending on the infant, some prefer a more serious approach).

cats have to be addressed formally at all times. no baby voices for them

I've seen American ladies do this in their daily life and it usually leads me to seriously consider the benefits of homicide

Giggorata · 10/08/2023 15:28

The Deputy Headmistress at our school spoke like this, and there was nothing baby like or sweet about, believe me. Think Dolores Umbridge.

Xqyz · 10/08/2023 15:34

I think she's too old for vocal fry. It tends to be for younger people.
I do have sympathy for those who don't like their high pitched voices. It's more the fact that I can't sit in the garden and tune it out like I can with other voices. It penetrates my brain!

David Beckham used to have a much squeakier voice than he did now. Not sure how he changed his voice.
