Will this be enough to lose weight

So tired of being fat.

Tired of not being able to wear the beautiful & trendy clothes I want to wear.
Tired of how it makes me look so awful (I don’t carry weight well, when slim I’m quite good looking, with weight on, pretty awful looking)
I want to have more energy and feel a lot better.
I want my 5 year old Dd to be proud of me
I want to be in the best health I can to be around longer for my Dd

I need to lose around 3 stone

In the past I could only lose weight and maintain with cardio and frequent cardio, plus low/no carbs.

I eat healthily, but probably too much, this coupled with no exercise routine anymore or finding time for it means the weight has piled on after years of fertility meds and pregnancy.

If I went on the exercise bike 3-4 times per week and walked my dog every day, would I see weight loss, how long would it take?

I really want a wonderful, slim summer next year

I think everyone is different. Some people find that exercising is sufficient to manage their weight.

CatsSnore · 08/08/2023 13:58

It is about diet sorry OP.

Come and join us on the louise parker thread. No calorie counting, low carbs/no sugar, it falls off if you stick to it. Nice recipes and easy to make family meals (just add carbs for them).

Bear in mind that MN is an absolute hub of disordered eating and diet culture, and obsessed with "weight loss" rather than getting healthy.

More exercise will absolutely make you healthier than obsessing over calories. If you put on muscle it might not help you lose weight per se, but it will make you more toned and you will lose fat. But if you have specific goals the exercise needs to be targeted - look up specific workout routines rather than just going on the exercise bike aimlessly. You want a combination of resistance and cardio work ideally.

(I have always eaten and drunk what I want, in as large quantities as I want, while exercising regularly, and have never needed to lose weight.)

@IamAlso4eels

1000 calories a day diet was medically supervised - I’m disabled and can’t effectively exercise for weight loss purposes. I was advised that it was considered safe to cut daily calorie intake by between 500-1000 calories from the amount needed to maintain weight, until healthy rate of weight loss of around 2lb a week was achieved. Many people can achieve this on 1250-1500 calories a day, but it varies from person to person. Not sure what you mean by ‘long term’ because obviously if you didn’t increase your calorie intake to maintain weight after reaching your goal you would continue to lose weight.

@Bandyarsia But how do you know it’s that? If I eat healthily and often less than others? It doesn’t make sense. Even when I’ve cut right back, without exercise I barely lose weight

You need to examine your calorie intake. If your intake is more than you expend no amount of exercise will change things.

How do you go on that thread (sorry not very tech). I’m currently on keto so always looking for new recipes and advice etc.

You are right about the carbs. Keep to very low carbs if you can. Don't be scared of fat, it doesn't make you fat. Also try to avoid ultra processed food if possible.

hazelnutlatte · 08/08/2023 14:36

Agree with everyone else that diet is key - I am overweight and in the last 2 years have really got into exercise- I have a peloton and do spin classes 4-5 times a week, plus strength training and yoga. I do feel the benefits of exercise as I'm much fitter now and I'm probably a bit less wobbly than I used to be, but I haven't lost any weight! If anything I've put a bit of weight on as a reward myself for all of the exercise!
I know I need to diet but it's bloody hard!

There's the link. The LP book lean for life is fab but you could google some LP recipes and see the thread to get started and see if it works for you before committing.

Yup.
For example just looking at Jamie Oliver's healthy meals makes me always wonder if he has shares in olive oil industry😂. While it's admittedly ok healthy meals, I remember one when you ended up with like tablespoon and half per person. That's something like 170cal for not that much of an effect.

So again, healthy food doesn't mean weightloss food. But weightloss food doesn't mean unhealthy

CatsSnore · 08/08/2023 14:53

And not all calories are equal. Your body uses more calories to digest protein then carbs. I lose weight eating a diet rich in olive oil, nuts, cheese and meat with non starchy veg. You have to work out which way of eating suits you.

CClaire · 08/08/2023 14:53

You need to downsize your portions as well OP. Good luck.

whirlygirly · 09/08/2023 20:26

Before you beat yourself up because everyone is telling you you're doing it wrong, I would really advise reading up about intermittent fasting. I did not lose any weight in 3 years on a calorie controlled diet. I weighed and measured and did not cheat. I felt flabby, hopeless and frustrated.

Now I understand what I was doing to my insulin levels by eating regular, very small meals, I have made changes which mean I'm back in all my smallest clothes.

I've lost well over 2 stone painlessly and without calorie counting by simply modifying when I eat and trying to go for healthy, real food options. Tim Spector's books are great at explaining the scientific basis for this. He basically rubbishes calorie counting as it's based on an archaic concept and everyone processes food differently.
