Will this be enough to lose weight

Getthisfatsuitoffme · 07/08/2023 21:02

So tired of being fat.

Tired of not being able to wear the beautiful & trendy clothes I want to wear.
Tired of how it makes me look so awful (I don’t carry weight well, when slim I’m quite good looking, with weight on, pretty awful looking)
I want to have more energy and feel a lot better.
I want my 5 year old Dd to be proud of me
I want to be in the best health I can to be around longer for my Dd

I need to lose around 3 stone

In the past I could only lose weight and maintain with cardio and frequent cardio, plus low/no carbs.

I eat healthily, but probably too much, this coupled with no exercise routine anymore or finding time for it means the weight has piled on after years of fertility meds and pregnancy.

If I went on the exercise bike 3-4 times per week and walked my dog every day, would I see weight loss, how long would it take?

I really want a wonderful, slim summer next year

@Bandyarsia But how do you know it’s that? If I eat healthily and often less than others? It doesn’t make sense. Even when I’ve cut right back, without exercise I barely lose weight

You need to be in a calorie deficit and unless you are measuring that properly you can bet your bottom dollar you are not in deficit.

Exercise can help weight loss of course but the main culprit is food, you have already said you are active at walking with the dogs. The problem is your diet.

kegofcoffee · 07/08/2023 22:11

Exercise wise that's plenty. Although unless you're going full spin class on the bike then adding an extra 30 minutes brisk walk onto the dog walk will have the same or better effects.

You really should look into your diet though. Understand what's having the biggest impact and make little easy changes to bring your consumption down.

At the start of this year I started tracking calories, in the first 2 weeks of tracking I discovered so many easy weight loss wins like cutting out my daily orange juice, weighing my granola, using low cal spray, and switching cereal bars. These things made a huge difference to my weight loss without really dieting,

Gnomegnomegnome · 07/08/2023 22:35

What is your diet like?

What is a typical (honest)day?

1Step2Step · 08/08/2023 00:18

@Getthisfatsuitoffme

Saxenda is very similar to Ozempic (that is allegedly what the Kardashians used to lose weight). It’s a medication that slows gastric emptying and makes you feel fuller for longer, lack of appetite etc Saxenda is injected daily using a pen with a very tube needle. Ozempic is injected weekly.

1Step2Step · 08/08/2023 00:20

@Getthisfatsuitoffme * fine needle.

I lead a very active life (sea swimming, dog walking, gardening) and have been three stone overweight for years. I'd tried to lose weight several times, would lose a few pounds and then put it back on with some more too. All the activity didn't get or keep me slim because I ate and drank too much unhealthy, fattening food. I felt pretty fit, but awful about how I looked and was getting joint pain.

I joined Slimming World in January and have now lost 3 stone. I've not been hungry once and the structure of a balanced diet plus the exercise has got me where I want to be. I'm nearly 60 and would say that the exercise alongside the healthy eating has helped me shape up and not have saggy bits and skin as I've lost weight.

I've just lost 3.5 stone with SW, it's great, isn't it? Never been hungry. I started just before Xmas.

Lysianthus · 08/08/2023 00:38

OP, I've just watched a documentary on Prime called The Magic Pill.
Mind blowing, obvious, and, well, food for thought....

My weakness is savoury too, im
not fussed about sweets, cakes, chocolate etc, but do love crisps and dips 😬I barejy drink now, so it’s not that.
Walking isn’t enough, I walk lots with my dog, it’s never made a difference unfortunately
@IamAlso4eels Is 3 stone a massive amount?

That’s probably a significant part of your problem right there, honestly. Crisps and dips are highly calorific. I bet you’d start losing just from cutting those out.

Yes,it'll be that and all the other boys and pieces you don't realise are so high in calories.

Yes,3 stone is a lot to lose but doable. None of my clothes fit now,I didn't mean a bit baggy I mean flapping around or falling down, I've even had to buy new knickers, so it's significant loss. You will have to really overhaul your diet.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2023 07:19

** BITS not boys 🤣

Cakesandbabes · 08/08/2023 07:27

I put on most when I embarked on healthy eating because healthy food can be calorific. Healthy food doesn't mean weightloss food.
I still eat healthy but I did learn to fit it into calories needed and lost quite considerable amount.
Exercise is good because it helps with firming, muscle building, posture, blood flow, MH and digestive.

TookTheBook · 08/08/2023 07:27

While it's true about the above (diet is what will help weight loss) please don't be put off starting exercise or joining the gym! Getting fitter is so good for you at any age, you have to look at the long term benefits. Your mental health will also improve, metabolism improves, body composition too potentially if you are doing resistance/weights. Personally I also find I eat healthier when I'm regularly going to the gym, so it is motivation.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2023 08:31

Definitely keep up with excercise!

Pollywoddles · 08/08/2023 08:39

Have to agree with most of the posters, it’s mainly due to diet. I’ve just lost 4kg through diet alone, although I love exercise and before I had my baby I was in the gym 5 days a week, now I just don’t have the time between work and parenting. I’ve addressed my diet, looked at my portion sizes, cut out all the rubbish and stuck to a calorie deficit. Most people think they burn far more calories exercising than they actually do.

Janieforever · 08/08/2023 08:48

Op. The truth of the matter is you are eating enough to gain weight and take you to /maintain at 3 stone over weight.

Unless your exercise is athlete level then continuing to eat as you are whilst doing an exercise bike 3 to 4 times a week and some walking will have no real impact on your weight.

it may incentivise you though to eat less/healthier. But for a significant weight loss like this then you will need to adjust your diet.

can I ask why you are so reticent to?

WantingToEducate · 08/08/2023 08:55

Approaching · 07/08/2023 21:06

Weight loss at least 80% about the food you eat. So that’s where you need to concentrate.

Absolutely!

I’m a nurse and although I walk/run around the wards at the speed of light, for 14 hours at a time, yet I still wasn’t losing weight.

For the last month I have been calorie counting and making much healthier choices about what I eat and my portion size.

I have also started to do home work-outs three times a week (thanks to You-Tube) which focuses on getting your heart rate rising alongside being designed for fat burning. Those work-outs three times a day, that last 30 minutes each, are the only exercise I do.

Between the calorie counting and three work-outs a week I have lost 8lbs in just under 5 weeks time.

tiredmama23 · 08/08/2023 08:59

Another one saying it's diet first and foremost. I was a stone heavier post baby, I was still active, gym/ running 3-4 times a week but not losing. I then really looked into what I was eating, turned out I was consuming close to 2,300 cals some days without realising, which is way over my TDEE of 1900 ish! Made some simple dietary changes at the start of July, cut down carbs massively, upped my protein and started tracking everything. I eat around 1400-1600 cals a day now and I've lost 10lbs over the past 5-6 weeks. Exercise level hasn't changed. It's 100% the answer to weight loss. You need to be in a calorie deficit.

tiredmama23 · 08/08/2023 09:02

Just to add - I'm not starving myself either. 1400-1600 is plenty of calories for me and I don't go to bed hungry. it's just an adjustment in habits. Like instead of snacking on 2 bags of crisps or a piece of cake, I snack on Greek yogurt, fruit or nuts etc. I've also cut down from eating pasta 5-6 times a week to once a fortnight if that. It needed a complete overhaul of my habits to make it work, but it started in the kitchen, not in the gym as I'd wrongly thought originally.

mondaytosunday · 08/08/2023 09:03

Both is ideal - strength training will build muscle which burns more calories and will do more to change your shape, so don't just do cardio.
Track your food in an app - I use My Fitness Pal. Ignore exercise calories (way overestimated), but you will need to weigh your food to get accurate measurements and don't forget the oils you cook things in!
I have a lot to lose (more than five stone), and I eat 1500-1600 cals a day and lose about 1kg a week without adding much exercise. I will as I get slimmer.

TickleMyPickle · 08/08/2023 13:11

I’ve lost 4 stone over the last year.
I’m 44 and my youngest is 15.
I’ve felt like I’ve been on a diet for the last 15 years, when I reality I wasn’t keeping to anything consistently.
I told myself that I must have a hormone deficiency or thyroid problem, but once I started making sure I was in a calorie deficit every day, the weight started to drop off, and bizarrely now I don’t even feel like I’m on a diet!
To begin with I logged all my calories on My Fitness Pal but now I just keep a rough total in my head ( ideally no more than 1,600).
I started to move more, minimum of 10,000 steps a day, but aim for 15,000.
Now the weight has gone I’m stronger and fitter than ever and I go to Pilates twice a week and 2 aerobic classes too.
I never feel like I’m missing out or go to bed hungry.
I’ve also fallen into an intermittent fasting routine of only eating between 11am-7pm, and it really works for me.
You can do this, something just needs to click in your mind and once you start and you see the pounds dropping, it gives you the motivation to keep going.

Maray1967 · 08/08/2023 13:26

I’d say 3 stone is a significant amount rather than a massive amount - at least I’m telling myself that. I’m about 7 weeks in with Slimming World and 12 pounds off. Clothes that were too tight are now fitting. Over 2 stone to go.

You have to train yourself to eat better. I’m a biscuit and cake eater by preference. My sweet treats are now apples and grapes. When I stick to that, and avoid bread, I have a good week.

Gherkingreen · 08/08/2023 13:37

I'm losing a steady 1lb a week (late 40s, perimenopausal) by '16:8 fasting' (aka reducing overall calories). I can't be bothered counting calories so this works for me - by missing breakfast, calorie intake is reduced with ease. I eat healthily anyway, but have cut out sweet/salty snacks and have occasional alcohol at the weekend if I fancy it.
I walk 60mins a day on average with my dog and workout 4 X a week, weights and HIIT at home.
I wanted to shift about half a stone and it's happened without much effort, I can keep this up and tweak if needed.

Fraaahnces · 08/08/2023 13:39

Exercise is vital for cardiovascular health and it absolutely helps, but weight loss is scientifically known to be 70-80% diet. I bet when you are exercising you feel better about yourself and eat better as a result.

RealisticGuy · 08/08/2023 13:52

I used to work in this space.

The simple answer to losing weight is being in a calorie deficit. You can exercise, you can eat the right foods etc but the simplest way is to be in a daily calorie deficit. The weight will fall off at a steady rate.
