Wouldn't you turn it off? Noise on public space

On a crowded ferry. A family have a Christmas song on permanent loop on an ipad for thei baby. For 3 hours. It's not loud, but it's audible.

I've come to the conclusion that Pele can often be selfish and think point of themselves in these situations. We had similar on a plane. Parents on one row, children with iPad (easily as young as 3 years - don't know how it was allowed) on another.

CatsOnTheChair · 06/08/2023 19:50

I think if you are selfish enough to have music on in busy public place like a ferry (or plane) you aren't going to be considering others.
I got a load of abuse when I asked the guy next to me on a plane to use headphones. Fortunately the stewards agreed with me, and told him to turn it off about 15 mins later.

FarEast · 06/08/2023 19:55

YANBU

But there are rude ignorant people in this world ….

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 06/08/2023 19:59

You probably wouldn't want to live in my flat. Kids wander past blasting crap music out of their phones, cars blast their music out and people sing loudly in the pub next door, all the time.

NaughtPoppy · 06/08/2023 20:00

Quiet iPad music is surely preferable to crying baby?

CaputDraconis · 06/08/2023 20:20

Anyone who listens to anything aloud in public is an arsehole. Headphones were invented for a reason, no one wants to listen to your music/film/phone call

Nevermind31 · 06/08/2023 21:05

Not using headphones on public transport (at any age) is my pet gate and not something I would allow my children to do. Same with playing loud music and having open windows😜…

Yep. This exactly ☝️

midsomermurderess · 06/08/2023 21:14

It really is a thing now. There are paths near me, waking/cycle paths and it's now very common for cyclist to come along blaring music.

Sigmama · 06/08/2023 21:15

Naughtpoppy - and that is exactly the attitude of so many of these people, and no I'd rather hear a baby cry

It really isn’t.

The same Christmas song (in Aug) for 3 hrs?
I’d rather a crying baby.
Abd I think the same Xmas for 3 hrs at any time of year probably falls under the SAS definition of torture.

LadyZebra · 06/08/2023 23:15

FFS - same Xmas song

BogRollBOGOF · 06/08/2023 23:17

One day I will crack, blast out the 80s novelty songs and sing the bastards into submission...
We'll see how they like it then!

And there lies the problem! Why not interact with the baby? You know like normal people do? Share a book? Play a game? Instead of ignoring them and stopping their development?

A bit of Joe Whatsisname, “Shaddupya Face” would be appropriate wouldn’t it?

Not especially, no.

cocoloco117 · 07/08/2023 00:40

No they don’t give a fuck. We had to put up with those obnoxious American accented YouTube nursery rhymes at a hotel breakfast, at high volume. Worst is the kid’s just plonked in front of it and practically ignored by the parents. Almost makes you miss the performance parenting displays of yesteryear.

OCaptain · 07/08/2023 01:24

I was in hospital recently having an IV treatment and the woman next to me watched videos on her phone without headphones. 3 hours of f**ks (that was the type of content she was watching). I just don't understand the mindset of some people.

Spinningjenny23 · 07/08/2023 01:41

I encounter this behaviour every day on the bus on the days I can't work from home (not because I can't do my job from home, I'm actually much more productive, and 99.99999% of my job can be done from home, it's more because my boss is a presenteeist, self-promoting, pointless-meeting-loving utter incompetent. Never mind imposter syndrome, they're just an imposter).

Anyway, back to the actual thread - people have definitely got more selfish in things like not keeping their crappy music to themselves in public since COVID....I sometimes fantasise about being invisible for a day and muting their phones....

ConsuelaHammock · 07/08/2023 01:44

I’d say something. It’s incredibly selfish and I’m afraid the sound would make me really angry. I can’t stand that kind of noise.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 07/08/2023 02:01

I’d assume if they have a Christmas song on repeat for 3 hours in August that’s because it is the only song the child will listen, most children don’t want to watch the same song for 3 hours so I would assume the child had some sort of SEN which includes obsessive or ritualistic behaviours and routines and that they likely won’t tolerate headphones. I’d also assume that not playing the song could cause a meltdown, which could include self-injurous or aggressive behaviours.

Obviously there’s no way of knowing for sure the parents aren’t just inconsiderate but I’d have thought having to listen to the same Christmas song for 3 hours will be as tedious for the parents as it will be for you so I doubt they’d be playing it on a loop if there was a better alternative. If it was back to back Peppa Pig episodes I might think they were just inconsiderate, but the fact it is one single Christmas song in August suggest the likelihood of to sort of neurodiversity or disability being involved to me as most typically developing children at least accept some variation in their screen time.

Bozzicle · 07/08/2023 02:41

This a real big bear of mine. I particularly hate loud speaker phone calls. The other day I was in a lift with a guy who was talking to a woman on the phone. He was talking so loud so she could hear him and we could all hear her too. He gave zero fucks. It's just so rude. I hate it.

Bozzicle · 07/08/2023 02:42

Also I was on a beach - in the quiet area - and had to listen in to someone's phone convo. That totally pissed me off too because it was otherwise serene, calm & beautiful.
