On a crowded ferry. A family have a Christmas song on permanent loop on an ipad for thei baby. For 3 hours. It's not loud, but it's audible.

Recently I had to ask someone if they could not put headphones on their kid rather than everyone else having to listen to peppa fucking pig LOUDLY in a restaurant. It was not a specifically child friendly one either and I have turned into 'that' middle aged woman who does not care what people think. It is rude and obnoxious behaviour. I would have said something but then I cant seem to shut my mouth these days.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2023 05:25

How depressing that there are now ‘quiet areas’ on beaches.

LBF2020 · 07/08/2023 05:36

@Shurleyknot we had the same this weekend. The table behind us were allowing the kids to watch YouTube videos (loudly!!) without headphones. It wasn't a family oriented restaurant either. We left and found somewhere else to eat.

Quiet iPad music is surely preferable to crying baby?

Never. Take the baby for a walk. Don’t impose your awful noise on everyone else.

What did they say, @Shurleyknot?

And good on you - I’d have had to either ask to be moved, or if my food hadn’t arrived yet leave & explain why.

Welcome to the Coven , I was having the exact same thoughts at 3am. Yesterday my 19yo son described me as a "Karen" I remember the first time I heard this from my DC ( I think about 2 years ago) I was confused and I think slightly hurt. Yesterday I realised I no longer give a fuck( I was Karening about workmen's unsafe working practices FWIW) I will not be silenced, if that makes me a Karen or "difficult" then I embrace that description.

Isn't it. First time I've ever seen it.

I think if you are selfish enough to have music on in busy public place like a ferry (or plane) you aren't going to be considering others.
I got a load of abuse when I asked the guy next to me on a plane to use headphones. Fortunately the stewards agreed with me, and told him to turn it off about 15 mins later.

Given the amount of ambient noise on a plane it’s surely easier to hear stuff when wearing headphones.

DontYouThreatenMeWithADeadFish · 07/08/2023 07:38

I was on a fight to Turkey once where Frozens 'Let it go' was played without headphones on loop for four hours.

I don't like Frozen anymore.

No it’s not, don’t be this person.

rookiemere · 07/08/2023 07:42

There's another very similar thread on the go this morning.

Yes I so agree, particularly as headphones are so cheaply available these days. Some people seem to think the two alternatives are screaming baby or toddler versus loud ipad nursery rhymes, but there are other alternatives.

Yeah but it seems as though very few people teach their children how to behave anymore.

Trouble us also that when grown adults sit blaring out their ish noise in a public place without realising how irritating/rude it is then they’re going to think it’s fine to do the same for their kids.

It makes me so angry hearing whatever nonsense people are selfishly playing out, I can’t understand why anyone thinks it’s ok?

A bit of Joe Whatsisname, “Shaddupya Face” would be appropriate wouldn’t it?

The Chicken Song by Spitting Image on repeat should do the trick!

Cyclistmumgrandma · 07/08/2023 08:11

It just seems so unnecessary to have the volume up so high. We were in a crowded café yesterday. The family behind us had a video on the phone for their little one BUT it was on very quietly. We could hardly hear it on the next table so no problem.

rookiemere · 07/08/2023 08:11

@Changingplace agreed. I've been subjected on buses recently to middle aged adults watching their shows on the phone at full volume.

Then there is the teens who watch music videos- although I get that a bit more if more than one of them wants to listen to something - still rude though.

Yes to this. I pads had just been invented when DS was about 4-5 so if we were on holiday and he had finished his dinner before us we would let him play a few games on it, but with the volume off so it didn't disturb others.

jenbj · 07/08/2023 08:44

I say something when this happen on buses or trains. Not every time, but generally I do and I find people get a bit arsey then stop. And surprise surprise, other people then start saying thanks.

Or my other tactic is to sit next to them and play my own music/video at full volume. They usually then move somewhere else and I switch mine off.

DappledThings · 07/08/2023 08:53

NaughtPoppy · 06/08/2023 20:00

Quiet iPad music is surely preferable to crying baby?

Nope. Anything coming out of a device is constant, irritating and deliberately inflicted on everyone else. Crying babies are a fact of life and can be taken out or fed or cuddled or whatever they need.

Would prefer to hear a crying baby than anything coming from an ipad every time.

Sigmama · 07/08/2023 08:53

I dont agree just turning it down is ok, i can always hear that horrible scratchy electronic noise. Headphones, or volume off completely.

Sigmama · 07/08/2023 08:54

Goldencup - or you could tell your son not to use misogynistic language

jenbj · 07/08/2023 09:16

I'm sitting in a cafe in central London. Only about 3 people in here. There is a woman on a laptop having a zoom/teams meeting with colleagues. Without any earphones. Oblivious to those of us around her. I can only see this getting worse. Why do people think this is acceptable?

Do you feel capable of going over & joining in? Or at least standing in view of the colleagues & looking interested?

jenbj · 07/08/2023 09:39

@EmpressaurusOfCats i wish I'd thought of that! She's finished now. They were American and there was a lot of very loud talking about bonding 🤣

It is, of course, a fact that until the invention of the iPad, all babies cried incessantly until the age of three, whence they commenced screaming.

I can one up you OP - a three year old playing with a game that repeated whatever they said in a stupid high pitched voice. In A&E. Whilst the mum FaceTimed someone. For two hours. Whilst I was in there for suspected miscarriage.

(baby was mercifully fine, and I'll be damned if my parenting strategies include 'imposing shitty iPad noise' on other people)
