I probably am BU to ask but we’re in Hay for a weekend. It’s rainy today, sunny tomorrow. Two children age 8 and 12. What to do??? Sorry, I know IABU but I need fast answers 🤣

No Welsh buddies on here?

OP posts:
Userhay · 05/08/2023 09:08

Or Herefordshire pals?

Is there a film on at Booths? Spend ages in bookshops and cafes today and then walk up Hay Bluff tomorrow, or walk along to the Warren and paddle in the river.

Japril · 05/08/2023 09:10

Or you could drive to Oakchurch garden centre for a mooch and then on to Hereford.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/08/2023 09:11

Personally, I'd just camp in the ice-cream shop!

Hotmalibu94 · 05/08/2023 09:12

I mean, you could embrace the rain and go for a walk 🤣 the waterfalls in the Brecon beacons are beautiful when it's raining! Or check out this list and there might be stuff to suit you. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g186425-Activities-zft11295-Wales.html

Thanks guys! Hay today is the plan. I was hoping for some sort of age appropriate museum/NT house. But the beauty of being here is that we feel we’re away from it all I suppose!

I stupidly didn’t bring swim things/wetsuits

Drews · 05/08/2023 09:16

The castle is open again now. That'll keep you busy for half an hour or so. There's a good garden centre down the road at Three Cocks.

Stellaroses · 05/08/2023 09:16

Spend the day in Abergavenny?
My personal go to for this kind of scenario is rainy walk (set max time), buy a new board or card game, everyone choose a new book, sit in a nice cafe or pub for a couple of hours. Hot chocolates. Then move on to a different pub when it’s meal time!

Userhay · 05/08/2023 09:19

@Stellaroses I like your style!

Userhay · 05/08/2023 09:20

@Drews ok, so castle, ice cream, bookshops - check!

The antique shops are quite fun in Hay, we have spent a good hour wandering, chatting and looking at retro cricket sets, chamber pots and weird ornaments. Competition to find the ugliest/weirdest item?

Userhay · 05/08/2023 09:28

Has anyone been to Big Pit?

@Stellaroses we all love second hand shops!

My first thought was Big Pit!
Well worth a visit, allow a good hour to get there, and if irrc you will need to book your entry, but it's very interesting experience and dry!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/08/2023 09:42

We didn't go to the Big Pit but I think it looks fascinating for an insight into Welsh industrial history more than anything.

TheInfusionist · 05/08/2023 09:42

Get yourself to The Old Electric Shop for coffee or lunch, books, lots to look at there, it's really big.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/08/2023 09:43

Big pit is a great trip!

Phineyj · 05/08/2023 09:53

Aw, impressed Big Pit's still there. I visited on School Journey aged 11 in 1984! Your kids will love it.

Drews · 05/08/2023 11:22

I also second The Old Electric Shop. Great lunch and coffee with loads to look at in the shop itself.

Has anyone been to Big Pit?

Yes, Big Pit is great, especially pithead baths and museum, and the Stack Square cottages.
