Desperate for help (Birmingham, Twitter, car keys, NCP)

AIBU to beg for help from strangers on the internet?

I’m on holiday in Birmingham with three kids. I parked in an NCP car park on Monday night and we’ve been staying in a car park since.

We checked out this morning to leave and head home (Brighton) via Coventry to see my Nan (90 years old).

I can’t find my car keys 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oh OP! How frustrating!

it won’t help but hopefully will make you laugh. I lost my car keys for days. Searched high and low. My dad had the spare but was on holiday. Reluctantly had to pay for a new one. Found them hanging on the new hook I’d put up inside the porch as toddler had tried to post them through the letter box 😂😂

mummyh2016 · 04/08/2023 13:49

If you have a spare could you try and ring a courier based where you're from and ask them to bring you the keys? I'd expect it to be around £150 though, the ones I use normally charge around £1 a mile.
Or can someone at home send them recorded delivery to your hotel so you gave them first thing in the morning and you stay an extra night?

Fizzadora · 04/08/2023 13:38

Coat pocket?
Jeans pocket (what were you wearing on Monday - is it packed in your case?
Inside an umbrella.
Shopping bag
Kids bags.

Have you tried searching for an auto locksmith near you?. We had to do this for my son once. It was £90 but it was a few years ago now

Great list @Fizzadora. No jeans, was wearing a dress (no pockets) on Monday.

No brolly.

I’ve emptied all our bags three times, keys are definitely not there.

Thereafter, if you in theory had them out and about with you in your handbag, they could have fallen out at any stage. Calm down and methodically write a list of everywhere you've visited. Then you'll have to phone around, or try and ask on Facebook and Twitter just in case.

PearlHandle · 04/08/2023 13:49

Retrace your steps and ask in every place of business on the route. My local Facebook is always full of people saying those have found things and left them at random shops.

Dreamingofthree · 04/08/2023 13:49

Could you maybe drop by the police station? ( I think it’s in digbeth by the bus station ) and ask if anything has been handed in?

mummyh2016 · 04/08/2023 13:50

Or can you stay at your nans tonight and someone send the keys there?

rileynexttime · 04/08/2023 13:50

Massive sympathy

Whiskeypowers · 04/08/2023 13:54

Sorry if this is been suggested but have you checked with nearest police station to see if they were handed in

also go
on nearest community page on Facebook see if any one found them or post yourself

Thanks for sharing @UpUpUpU. I hope I can laugh about this one day.

I just burst in to tears when the hotel staff sent chips and coke for us.

This is stressful OP. The only thing I can suggest is to totally retrace your steps. literally from you arrived, go everywhere you went. It might trigger a memory or you might find them. Good luck (from a fellow loser of car keys, albeit luckily for me not in the same circumstances).

LakieLady · 04/08/2023 13:56

Also try posting on nextdoor.co.uk and ask if anyone has found a car key of that make and handed it in anywhere. Someone local to me was reunited with their keys after doing that. They'd dropped them near a shop and the finder had handed them in to the shop.

Police were suffering from chocolate teapot syndrome, unfortunately @Whiskeypowers.

Can you recommend a page/group on FB?

Pockets, have you checked the pockets of the clothes you were wearing? In shopping bags, suitcase pockets, toy bags?

Ohdofuckofdear · 04/08/2023 14:00

OP Check inside dressing gown pockets(something I did once on holiday and didn't check till it was too late)and what about bins in your room and the bathroom, have you pulled the beds out, checked under the beds, behind headboards,on windowsills,on top of wardrobes, lining of bags(incase of any small holes you hadn't noticed)linings of suitcases.

HowNice23 · 04/08/2023 14:00

A mobile auto locksmith might be cheaper than the AA and quicker. Do a Google and see what comes up. I know a terrific locksmith in Brum but I think he's just houses. Happy to DM you his details if it helps. He might know someone who can sort new keys.

Solidarity @Nodramabanana, there’s no way I can retrace every single step. We’ve done so much and I need to stay close to the car park for when the key technician arrives.

Any chance they are on the top of the car ?
We once left ours there.A last swim before leaving to catch a plane.

Thanks @Ohdofuckofdear, no dressing gown or hoody. I’ve done everything you’ve listed. Even the bins.

Under mattresses, inside duvet covers and pillow cases, behind headboards…

Thanks for the suggestion @rileynexttime.

Not on top of the car, nor underneath, checked wheel arches too.

Can a main dealer order you a set?

@Doggymummar, your post made me laugh, I know what you meant by dealer but my mind went elsewhere and, frankly I’m grateful for the light relief.

You said in a PP that you pulled your car keys out and told your children they'd be no use for what you were looking for at the time, have you asked your DC if they can remember why?I presume that was in your hotel room?

That's a shame, as if they were in your hand bag chances are they fell out while you were getting something out of it (e.g. a purse), so good chance they've ended up in a shop or whatever which would probably have kept them.

LostCarKeys · 04/08/2023 14:07

Skyblue92 · 04/08/2023 13:13

Have you checked the bags in case they are in their?
also just so you know A45 from Birmingham to Coventry is closed between Meriden and Allesley roundabout - factor this into travelling (you may already know)

Thanks @Skyblue92, your username suggests you’re a local.

I wondered why my sat nav sent me via the M6 on Monday. Now I know and can stop hating it.
