So my boss has just sacked me for saying Iv been spreading malicious gossip about him to customers. Long story short Iv never signed a contract, I don't receive payslips and Iv worked for him for less than two years. Back last year a colleague found a bag of class A drugs, brought them to me the boss have showed up and admitted they were his, end of it's none of my business what he does in his spare time. A year later he's sacked me over the phone stating I'm untrustworthy because Iv been gossiping about his drug addiction - to clarify I have NEVER mentioned anything about this because quite frank it's none of my business and I don't care enough. On the other note, the colleague that found them hasn't been sacked nor had a word with he's just assumed it was me, without even so much as asking for my side of the story even though there isn't one because no words have left my mouth about this. Aibu? Could I take this to a tribunal?

He won’t ‘shit himself’ as he knows he can sack employees without giving a reason if they’ve worked less than two years. He hasn’t broken any laws even if he is morally wrong.

I’m referring to the fact OP knows about the drugs not the fact she’s not been employed for 2yrs

Op can't prove a thing? Why would he care?

That completely sucks 😞 but when it comes to referencing for your new job they HAVE to give you one but if my boss was like that I don't think I'd want them to approach him 🤣

No employer has to give a reference. Nor does it have to be positive.

Urban myth.

Treesinmygarden · 05/08/2023 00:06

Maybe you could temp for a bit - get a reference from them?

You couldn't ever work for this miserable bastard again. It's totally unfair but there's not a lot you can do, sadly. See it as a fortunate escape if you can. If there's ever a drugs raid, you won't be there.

SlashBeef · 05/08/2023 14:37

WhosTHATgirllala · 04/08/2023 15:11

What's your story?
Sorry you've had to go through that, it's shocking isn't it.

He was a very driven businessman but everything was done to cut costs and corners. Staff turnaround was wild, literally new staff every few weeks. He was very clearly on some sort of substance. Nobody got paid on time and payslips were rare. He'd watch us on his cameras and phone us if we took quick breaks to use the toilet.. just endless bullshit. I didn't last long! I can't be doing with that sort of nonsense.

WhosTHATgirllala · 05/08/2023 15:59

@SlashBeef oh I'm sorry you went through that! Are you sure we didn't work for the same man hahah!!🤣

nancy75 · 05/08/2023 16:03

I think I’d been inclined to tell him you won’t report him for failure to provide contract & payslips if he agrees to provide you with a good reference - basically you’ll go quietly if he doesn’t get in the way of you getting a new job

Smilencuddlesthenstab · 05/08/2023 17:19

Oh for goodness sake. People are too quick to criticise. I said ‘IF it turns out you HAVENT paid…..’

Smilencuddlesthenstab · 05/08/2023 17:21

I’m sorry for my posts. I’m trying to reply to a specific person and keep just adding a new post 😳😳

jobie70 · 05/08/2023 17:52

tell all the customers about his addiction.. might aswell be sacked for the right reason 😂

If you click on the three dots at the bottom right of the post you want to reply to, it will bring up a drop down box. Choose ‘quote’ and that post will then appear in a separate box and you can post your reply underneath.

Julimia · 05/08/2023 18:42

Oh my just be glad you are out of it and look for another job on a proper footing. Move on

Orangewinegum8481 · 05/08/2023 19:00

He's probably paranoid from the drug taking. Tbh OP it sounds like you've had a lucky escape as it's not the place you would to work anyway. I know that's not the point and in terms of taking this further, I'd leave it tbh as they would more than likely start asking you some questions. Concentrate on finding new job opportunities where everything is above board and you're valued.

Welshmonster · 05/08/2023 19:57

Make a police report now if what you saw. It’s not like he’s going to employ you again.

make sure you get a p45 sent through and any wages owed including holiday

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/08/2023 20:30

Has the other person involved worked there longer than two years?

I suspect you were easy to sack due to the time you'd worked there, and your sacking serves as a warning to her - she may be harder to sack if shes worked there longer, or she may be more valuable, for now, so safer and better to sack you.

Whichever way round it is, you're better off out of it.

SoShallINever · 05/08/2023 20:34

It's not that easy to just "tell the Police" though, maybe she is frightened of recriminations. He is already suspicious of her, who is to say what a paranoid addict is capable of?
You are we out of there OP. You are experienced and in your position I would temp for a while to get a decent reference.

Gemlh · 05/08/2023 20:49

It sounds like that little baggie has started to get to your boss’ head!

Well, the idiot is going to regret sacking you because you were loyally keeping your mouth shut, and what's to stop you now gossiping to everybody who knows him that he's a class A drug user and sacked you because you knew his secret?

What a complete plonker!

JenWillsiam · 05/08/2023 21:03

The only protection you have is protected characteristics. You’re stuffed.

Smartstuffed · 05/08/2023 22:29

I was wondering whether it actually was drugs. And why the colleague who found it passed it to you.

My brain then went off on a tangent, albeit an unlikely one, and wondered whether the same scenario might be played out with every employee (with your colleague in cahoots with the boss) just so he has an easy excuse (gossip and loose tongues) when he wants to get rid of staff before the two year mark.

Maybe the 'drugs' are designed to make him look edgy/hard and not someone to mess with in order to get rid of people quickly and quietly.

On the other hand... that would be a dick strategy on his part as it could well bring him unwanted attention from the police. He might not be very intelligent. Who knows?

Regardless, he sounds like a shit employer playing the system and the OP is well out of it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/08/2023 22:51

Given that the only evidence he has of sacking you is his word, I would forestall it and email (and write recorded) your resignation.

That way you can legitimately write on your CV that you resigned, and he cannot prove that he sacked you first. Then when asked why you resigned and dont want him as a reference, you highlight the lack of professionalism and such things as no contract, pay slips etc and that you didnt want to be connected to such a business.

IncreasinglyGrumpy · 06/08/2023 09:07

My thoughts too !! When did finding a bag of Class A drugs become normal 'not my business' - ?!

That's good advice, I might do exactly that. Thank you.
