To think that wall-to-wall news coverage of the 'earthquake' is way OTT?

Tragic events are happening every hour around the world, and now 'we go live to Mrs so-and-so who's got some soot on her carpet...' Boo fucking hoo
It's making my blood boil.
And absolutely NO mention today of poor wee missing Shannon.
The news is a disgrace today

PinkPussyCat · 27/02/2008 13:42

BeauLocks · 27/02/2008 13:43

quiet news day I guess.

PinkPussyCat · 27/02/2008 13:44

I do have sympathies with people who have lost bricks from their chimneys etc but it hardly warrants such vast coverage with 3 reporters 'live on the scene' what scene ffs?

OP posts:
PinkPussyCat · 27/02/2008 13:44

Yes def a slow news day!

OP posts:
moljam · 27/02/2008 13:55

PinkPussyCat · 27/02/2008 13:59

Quite agree - journo pointing to a pile of rubble on news this morning talking about the damage to homes.
How many people died in thje Pakistan earthquake? Was it 50,000? Some perspective pur-leese!

Blandmum · 27/02/2008 14:06

I think tha reason it is 'news' is that it is novel.

Far more damage was done in the recent floods, but floods are not uncommon.

Earthquakes are (in the UK).

Nothing this newsworthy has happened in Lincoln since the last time an earthquake struck, and knocked down most of the cathedral!

PinkPussyCat · 27/02/2008 14:06

Thank you FJ
And FWIW, what I saw was not even a pile of rubble, it was approximately three bricks and a flowerpot!

It is novel. But top of the news? All day?

I was having this exact same convo with my mum earlier, we were laughing at the likes of Fiona Phillips on GMTV and local news journos asking us to email/ text in any video footage of the aftermath of the earthquake or your experiences (one went like this, spoken in broad Lancs accent... "i woke up t'shaking and thought it were a bus.. but then I looked at my clock and it were 1 o clock and so i knew there were no buzzes at 1 in t'morning..." That's it, that was her story!

Imagine if the Japanese saw it? Their video footage is of whole skyscrapers swaying whilst inside they try and catch falling cabinets and fax machines. I expect the their will be a worldwide relief effort in sympathy.

YANBU, news yes but not the whole programme!

PinkPussyCat · 27/02/2008 14:23

Aah what a funny old country we live in eh?

OP posts:
jojosmaman · 27/02/2008 14:25

I expect the their?? I expect they're.. obviously.

jojosmaman · 27/02/2008 14:26

What is wrong with me?? there.. fgs..

PinkPussyCat · 27/02/2008 14:29

Definately and the kit kat I have just found in my bag!

globetrotterinvietnam · 27/02/2008 16:58

yanbu, I'm in Vietnam so haven't seen it, but I can imagine....

There are plenty, more important, stories to cover in other countries.

2shoes · 27/02/2008 17:07

but why shoouldn'y they cover news in this country. paople are interested.

littleducks · 27/02/2008 17:11

hmmm, i was disapointed that at 1.10 am sky news still hadnt picked up on the story! i felt it miles away in berks and am fascinated, having never had an experience like it before, would like to know what other people experienced. I have turned on the news more than once today when i dont normally watch it.

Unfortunately i think there is no news about the missing girl, she is as far as i know still missing and the police dont have a clue or are deliberately keeping any thing they know quiet to protect investigation.

i do realoise if you have been in bigger earthquakes its less impressive

yurt1 · 27/02/2008 17:45

The Japanese discuss tiny earthquakes at work the next day and if they're in an area that doesn't get that many earthquakes for Japan (such as Hiroshima) they are reported on the news.
