To stay in a hotel room with no en suite?

DH&I are going away for a weekend very soon. It's a rare child free weekend away;I'm a full time carer for three disabled teenagers with various levels of need so some respite is desperately needed.

Also as for the reasons above we are watching our budget as we are a one income household and carers allowance isn't very much.

Where we're going is beautiful but not the cheapest because it's August;we've had to rule out other places because of accommodation prices.

Any we were looking at mainly chain hotels that fell within budget but the ratings&reviews aren't that great.

Then I stumbled across a little gem with one room left for our dates;a gorgeous looking little independent 10 bedroom hotel that's a 12th century period property with breakfast included that has incredible reviews and great ratings with lots of people saying the breakfast is excellent and it was a good price too;it's well within our budget with free parking (unlike the other hotels).

But then I discovered why it's so reasonably priced;it doesn't have a en suite bathroom;it's the only room without one however there's a bathroom that exclusively for the use of the room a few steps across the corridor.

My husband isn't keen as he says it's inconvenient however we've previously stayed with the kids in youth hostels and had to use the communal bathrooms.I don't see
the issue,we'll just take flip flops and dressing gowns to traverse across the corridor to the bathroom;I would think with only a few bedrooms and according to the reviews they are spaced out across 4 sections of the building we probably won't really encounter other people often.

AIBU in booking this room?

I'd be fine with that if it was the difference between going and not

eatdrinkandbemerry · 03/08/2023 17:57

It wouldn't bother me at all 🤷‍♀️
Sliders and a dressing gown.
It's not like your going to be using the bathroom that often.

Zebedee55 · 03/08/2023 18:01

I wouldn't but if it's definitely exclusive and that you have a key, then it might be ok.

I've done non en-suite years ago, just don't want to do it now.

Neverseenbefore · 03/08/2023 18:05

Can someone explain to me why they absolutely wouldn’t do it? I actually don’t understand why not. Is it that you have an en suite at home, so it’s what you expect as a minimum?

CornishTiger · 03/08/2023 18:06

I would have booked it however I do think the hotel should sort a lock out so it’s lockable from outside if it is for exclusive use of that particular room. It’s such an easy fix and would get them more bookings.

JMSA · 03/08/2023 18:09

I'd go for it!
Enjoy your well-deserved break Smile

If the incredible view was from a balcony I think I’d have stuck with that room instead of the new en-suite one.

Absolutely agree;if they could one of those key code pads would probably work too so the key couldn't be lost.

No balcony;a window.

The other room looks nice enough though;it's at the back of the hotel which the website says "is perfect for those wanting a quieter room"

I had this same worry once but literally never saw a soul at any time going to the bathroom or back, everyone was either out or stayed in their room, and we actually had the biggest bathroom

caringcarer · 03/08/2023 18:53

Sounds like you will have a lovely break.

PrideNails · 03/08/2023 19:03

That would be a no from me. I'm usually in and out of the bathroom/bedroom when getting ready so that would frustrate me. Plus I don't want to have to chuck on clothes just to nip to the toilet.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2023 19:36

Wouldn't bother me

Happy to nip access in a nightie for a week or walk across corridor in a towel after a shower

Be nice to dh not to stink the en-suite out tbh

What's the price diff out of curiosity

SerenChocolateMuncher · 03/08/2023 19:43

A private bathroom is as good as an en-suite in my opinion. In some ways it's better if one or both of you have smelly bowel issues.

Surely a dressing gown or cardigan over your nighty would do. Judging from the number of people I see wearing bedclothes in public nowadays, I don't think a quick dash across the hall in your nighty is going to cause too many raised eyebrows.

I don't own a dressing gown and sleep naked. We don't have an en suite at home but I don't have to do anything but stumble to the bathroom if I need it in the night. Putting clothing on would mean I'd wake up more and then struggle to get back to sleep.

AlanGrantsNeckerchief · 03/08/2023 19:52

i’ve done this in a boutique hotel in New York and it was totally fine! i don’t think we even saw another person the whole time we were there!

ThinWomansBrain · 03/08/2023 20:03

just seen the update- well done

I booked a B&B this afternoon (for a festival next year) which appears to have an en suite bathroom but a shared loo.
there was a second room with an en suite, but more expensive. THere are only two guest rooms plus the owners, so can't be that much of a problem.

Got to be better than glamping and trudging across a field to share portaloos and .showers wiht hundreds.

saraclara · 03/08/2023 20:06

I've stayed in such places several times. If the bathroom is for your exclusive use, I don't see any reason not to take the room.
I've even stayed in rooms with a shared bathroom across the corridor. I can see why others wouldn't, but an exclusive use one is honestly not a big deal.

You're assuming I wear clothes to bed...
Anyway it's obviously a personal preference.

I was thinking this I ended to walk down hall and past teenage sons bedroom ( when he's there) to go to the bathroom

PinkRoses1245 · 11/10/2023 10:21

I'd double check the bathroom is only for your use, but otherwise seems fine.

See at home I have to throw on a dressing gown to go to the loo in the night. Not sure my 19 year old and possibly his girlfriend want to see me starkers

We went;it was fab;the hotel was the cathedral view Lincoln;would recommend;it was ideally situated by the castle, cathedral and top of the strait/steep hill which is a beautiful street of quirky shops and eateries.

There's a walking ghost tour at the weekends that we went on which was fun and it ended right by a tucked away chip shop which had a brilliant takeaway menu which includes beer/cider and we took advantage of the picnic benches outside.
