To stay in a hotel room with no en suite?

DH&I are going away for a weekend very soon. It's a rare child free weekend away;I'm a full time carer for three disabled teenagers with various levels of need so some respite is desperately needed.

Also as for the reasons above we are watching our budget as we are a one income household and carers allowance isn't very much.

Where we're going is beautiful but not the cheapest because it's August;we've had to rule out other places because of accommodation prices.

Any we were looking at mainly chain hotels that fell within budget but the ratings&reviews aren't that great.

Then I stumbled across a little gem with one room left for our dates;a gorgeous looking little independent 10 bedroom hotel that's a 12th century period property with breakfast included that has incredible reviews and great ratings with lots of people saying the breakfast is excellent and it was a good price too;it's well within our budget with free parking (unlike the other hotels).

But then I discovered why it's so reasonably priced;it doesn't have a en suite bathroom;it's the only room without one however there's a bathroom that exclusively for the use of the room a few steps across the corridor.

My husband isn't keen as he says it's inconvenient however we've previously stayed with the kids in youth hostels and had to use the communal bathrooms.I don't see
the issue,we'll just take flip flops and dressing gowns to traverse across the corridor to the bathroom;I would think with only a few bedrooms and according to the reviews they are spaced out across 4 sections of the building we probably won't really encounter other people often.

AIBU in booking this room?

I'd prefer an en suite, but if the bathroom is for your exclusive use and it's a really gorgeous hotel within budget, then I'd certainly settle for a room that wasn't en suite. I wouldn't stay there if the bathroom was shared but if it's for your use only (ideally you want to have a key I think) it's only a tiny inconvenience. You do get this arrangement sometimes in small hotels that are in historic properties, I assume because of the complications of altering rooms or knocking down walls in what I imagine might be a listed building (or has walls about three foot thick because of its age!) and I've experienced this before in a similarly old property. Just make sure you've got robes and slippers/flip-flops (if the hotel doesn't provide them).

If your partner is really dead against it then I wouldn't book; it's his trip too. But it sounds like a decent option within your budget!

We did this last year, we went for a meal and decided to stay over last minute but the only B&B that had a room had no ensuite. It was one of the nicest b&b's we've stopped in! It did only have 3 bedrooms so was pretty small but the bathroom was just gorgeous! Massive shower and roll top bath and was extremely clean!

I'd go for it now I've done it before and would thoroughly recommend you do too.

We have done this quote a few times, it is actually fun I think especially when we get old quirky places

Maddy70 · 03/08/2023 10:47

It's exclusive for you so yes go for it. Take a dressing gown and flip flops

mindutopia · 03/08/2023 10:48

Yes, it would be fine for me. I'd rather stay in a small independent hotel than a grim big chain one. It's quite normal in those old buildings and I've stayed in them many times. I actually lived in a long stay sort of hotel abroad (it was a mix of hotel guests and people like me who were there temporarily but staying a month at a time - I was there for 6 weeks waiting for my new flat to become available), and it was just rooms with (non-private) WC and shower rooms at the end of the corridor. Not ideal, but it was fine for short-term.

HoppingPavlova · 03/08/2023 10:49

It’s a Nope from me, but I usually get up around 3 times per night to wee so couldn’t be bothered with the whole dressing gown/slippers/leaving room/key entry back in/realising I forgot key as am half asleep and waking the floor while I knock on the door to try and get DH attention to let me in.

ActDottie · 03/08/2023 10:55

If it was a shared bathroom I’d say no for sure but given it’s exclusively yours I’d just go for it :)

StartSWagaintomorrow · 03/08/2023 10:55

I would.

CheersToMe · 03/08/2023 10:59

As it's exclusive use I'd go for it, but would ask if the bathroom door is lockable from the outside so it truly for your use only.

Konfetka · 03/08/2023 11:00

Chamber pot

Sewingdufus · 03/08/2023 11:00

Book it, quickly!

Duckingella · 03/08/2023 11:06

I've just called them as I needed to check something regarding the parking;I asked about the bathroom;there is no exterior lock to lock it from the outside however the owner reckons no one else uses it and I should be fine to leave my toiletries in there.

I've thought this too,DH spends ages in the bathroom on the loo and when we've stayed in hôtel rooms in the past the smells has drifted into the room;having a separate bathroom solves that issue.

Off topic but I very much recommend VIPPoo for such eventualities!

DH and I use different bathrooms at home, but on holiday share and the ability to be able to use the bathroom straight after DH (or vice versa) without whiffy pongs making you want to vomit is much welcomed!

SheRaaaaa · 03/08/2023 11:30

Have a lovely time op!

FarEast · 03/08/2023 11:33

I often stay in student accommodation or B&Bs with no en suite. It’s fine. You just have to remember to take your key with you if you pop to the loo in the middle of the night, but if you’re going with your DH then you don’t even have to do that!

The hotel sounds gorgeous. Any hints about location?

PuppyMcPupFace · 03/08/2023 11:33

I've just accidentally stayed in one like this. Worth checking that towels are provided as I had to shake myself dry!

Ragwort · 03/08/2023 11:37

Absolutely fine and like others I would actually prefer it .. hate having to use an en suite in close proximity to someone else. Grin.

Dombasle · 03/08/2023 11:44

For something that you are going to probably only going to use twice a day each whilst on holiday it will be fine.

AlltheFs · 03/08/2023 11:48

It wouldn’t put me off. I have to go downstairs to the bathroom at home, across the corridor is an improvement 😂

Yusay · 03/08/2023 11:49

RipePeach · 03/08/2023 10:25

Sounds fabulous! I think I'd actually prefer this - I hate having to listen to DH going to the loo whilst I'm in bed 😂

This!

continentallentil · 03/08/2023 11:49

It’s fine - go for it. Sounds lovely

I wouldn't be leaving anything in there, as it isn't lockable it isn't strictly exclusive and the owner cannot guarantee nobody else will use it, somebody might if their partner / friend is using their own ensuite.

To your original question, I wouldn't forgo a bathroom to save money, but I have stayed somewhere without an ensuite because it was a road trip in rural Australia and it was the only option. I would only want to do it for a night though.

I think the bathroom being across the hallway will mean I'll get some peace as it'll prevent the temptation for DH to wander in when I'm in the bathroom.

As for others using the bathroom;if I went to a hotel and had an ensuite in my room I don't think I'd be trying doors in the corridor to see if there is an extra bathroom

Duckingella · 03/08/2023 15:52

I've booked it;it's paid for and non refundable.

I love quirky,I'm a quirky person.DH may thinks it's inconvenient but this is the man who'll literally go toilet anywhere so he's not that fussy;he can easily be swayed by a gorgeous location, period features and a decent breakfast plus as I'm a sole trader with my little business we'd much rather support independent businesses like this hotel.

I'll update you in about two weeks and pass on the hotel name if it's any good.

I've traveled round the UK a fair bit and can pass on suggestions for some fab independent businesses and smaller chains.

A quick update;the hotel had a room with an ensuite become available this afternoon so we've moved our booking to that room instead;it doesn't have thé incredible view the other room did and looks abit smaller but it's the same price;I guess I got lucky.
