I'm always getting mistaken for a shop worker

AIBU for always being annoyed for always been mistaken for a shop worker or do people not check?

I'm always been mistaken for a shop worker. The other day I went to the B&Q in a pair of flip flops, adidas stripped hoodie, jogging bottoms and had my sunglasses on my head. I was pushing a trolly and someone still thought I worked for B&Q.

Late at night in a not busy McDonald's I was wearing flip flops, long black jogging bottoms and a long grey top. I was sipping on my Oasis and I still got asked to help with the machine.

I'm always alone and minding my own business....

These days it could just be the sheer shock of actually finding another human being in a shop that makes people do this.... it's all gone a bit Black Mirror where we live....

Coffeetree · 04/08/2023 06:53

OP do you have any of these shirts in pink?

I'm afraid you must have a friendly and approachable vibe OP. I'm so sorry.

CherryMaDeara · 04/08/2023 07:01

I sometimes get asked too. I don’t mind, and still try and help but it does show many people are lazy and won’t bother looking for signs of an employee (badge, uniform, pushing a cage of goods, alertness etc). It also depends on the tone, anyone arrogant gets short shrift.

The last time I was in the market, I was wearing my belt bag to keep my hands free for browsing. People seemed to think it was a bum bag where I keep all the change for my stall 🤣

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/08/2023 07:27

I got asked for help in next and had my rock choir uniform on🤣 twice

Bonfire23 · 04/08/2023 08:22

I was in Asda wearing ambulance uniform. A fleece with NHS/AMBULANCE plastered all over it and a woman came to ask me where the sugar was
Me "I think it's the next aisle, maybe?"
Her "you should KNOW, I'm going to tell your manager how unhelpful you were"
Me Confused

Childcare47 · 04/08/2023 08:37

@Bonfire23 😂

@temosmail you probably just have a friendly face, I’d take it as a compliment.

I once was asked for help with finding something in a shop, they assuming I worked there, and it was someone I actually knew. They didn’t clock through your the entire interaction. Slightly surreal.

My mum once gave me a sort of Art Deco-y scarf, probably from Past Times, and I discovered that if I wore it in museums and art galleries I got people coming up and asking me where the toilets were.

This is amazing. 😁😁😁

I presume the Mac Donald’s one was because:
a) you were near the machine
b) you were by yourself, therefore did not have kids to look after, or weren’t engrossed in conversation with someone else that would be interrupted.
c) you are a woman, and thereby seen as more approachable merely by your sex
d) you don’t have face tattoos. ( assuming that one).

I've never been mistaken for a shop worker but I would never wear clothes like that apart from to take out trash or at home. Maybe spend some time researching how to look more put together.

Carry a noticeable bag. Game changer.

Off topic but God I miss Past Times! I loved their stuff, I was so sorry when they stopped shipping overseas and then disappeared.

Unnecessary comment.
Not everyone wants do be dressed up all the time. Personally, I have no desire to 'look more put together as I'm not a lego figure. I wear what I comfortable.

If approached in a shop by someone asking for help, I'll usually try. However when someone is rude and aggressive, assuming I'm staff then I'd do as a PP and point out that I don't work there and that their attitude to retail workers stinks.

temosmail · 03/08/2023 01:32

Stop it or I'll report you on the passive aggressive thread

I don't know why but I found this very funny 😂

You ok love? Honestly, take that stick from up your arse. Speaking as a person that, by your standards, dresses smartly every day, who the fuck made you Trinny and Susannah?

I had completely forgotten Past Times but oh I now miss it

MichaelAndersen · 02/09/2023 14:40

I am assuming OP is a woman, so please forgive me if I am wrong. The next time you are mistaken for a store clerk, I want you to think of the women and girls in Afghanistan and be happy that you live in a country where you can go to a store alone, in clothing of your choosing, and buy items with your own money, and not have to fear being beheaded by the morality police.

Rummikub · 02/09/2023 15:29

Wtf.

OP ignore that nonsense.
it is tiresome being mistaken for retail staff regularly.

What has the op being a woman got to do with it? Men can also be pleased they’re not women under the Taliban, as I am sure you do every time you dare to express the slightest degree of unhappiness with any aspect whatsoever of your life. Otherwise you would be rather a hypocrite, wouldn’t you?

WTF? 🙄

Well you’re a bundle of joy making a mountain out of a molehill aren’t you? 🙄🤣

same. I was sauntering through B&q recently, blatantly not in their distinctive orange apron uniform, talking a friend on my phone and some bloke stopped me to quiz me on something to do with pain. Had to say “I don’t work here”, mate was laughing her head off. He said that he thought I did 🤷‍♀️

VeloVixen · 02/09/2023 16:54

Oh and someone asked me about rabbit lifespan in pets at home recently.

And I’ve been asked about shapewear in primark….though the latter one I suspect she just thought I looked like a woman who would know about shapewear 😁

I always think the M&S staff are paramedics, they have the same shade of green uniforms and similar trousers/polo shirts.

not my job

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 20/10/2023 14:03

I have told this before. But not on here I don’t think. A few years ago I was in M and S food hall. Wearing a work suit and pushing a small trolley. A woman stopped me and asked where the vegan products were. Had I know I would just have told her. But I didn’t, so I said “sorry I don’t work here”. She replied “are you sure only you look as though you do”. I answered. “Yes I’m sure”. She then came back again and said “only if you work here and just can’t be bothered to help me that’s not very nice”. At that point I smiled and walked away. I then saw her talking to a real shop assistant and pointing me out.
