Peel or don't peel

Root ginger. Do you? Bastard fiddly stuff. I really think life's too short for that kind of faffing about, but my mum seems to think it's going to poison me if i don't peel it.

I kind of cut off the edges

NuffSaidSam · 02/08/2023 19:35

I cut a chunk off, roughly cut the skin off with a knife and then grate.

I don't think the skin would harm you though?

Cheesusisgrate · 02/08/2023 19:35

Peel with teaspoon

MontyDontysLinenTrousers · 02/08/2023 19:36

I give it a half-arsed peel using a teaspoon, then figure anything left on has fulfilled its destiny and should remain.

Cheesusisgrate · 02/08/2023 19:36

Skin isn't poison but depens on what you do it might not be pleasant texture

HollyRocks · 02/08/2023 19:45

It's all about the pesticides though. She has a bit of a thing about what it might have been sprayed with when it's grown. Or contaminated with when it's being shipped. Or a million other things that she's read somewhere (probably in the Daily Express)

You peel it with a spoon, it's easy

HollyRocks · 02/08/2023 19:47

@MontyDontysLinenTrousers

I read those words the wrong way round

half-peeled arse!!

lavagal · 02/08/2023 19:48

Teaspoon all the way

Maddy70 · 02/08/2023 19:49

Depends what I am using it for. But usually yes peel

Bookish88 · 02/08/2023 19:55

Peal!

It's definitely peel, in this context...

Apologies for my dyslexic (and drunk) typing.
It wasn't a spelling comment. It was a suggestion that not peeling (is that write this thyme !!!!!) isn't the way to go.

Flockameanie · 02/08/2023 20:01

I always just cut it off with a sharp knife, but now I’m going to try the teaspoon thing!

SM4713 · 02/08/2023 20:08

If there are corners/angles where soil could be trapped- I cut this so I can peel with the back of a blunt knife or spoon and wash off any dirt.

Unpeeled is not poisonous- just unpleasant in some recipes- esp if you get soily grit in your teeth!

OP- Your mum does realise its a rhizome which grows UNDER the ground doesn't she? Sprays when its growing would be systemic- not just on the skin- because its in the soil! Its very easy to grow at home too if she'd prefer her own, pesticide free ginger.

HollyRocks · 02/08/2023 20:28

@SM4713 I have no idea how her mind works, never have. I rinse it under the tap, but apparently that's not enough and i'm still going to be dead by next week if i don't start to peel everything. Except fruit. Fruit seems to be ok, (unless it's grown in the Middle East)

I buy frozen! Life's too short to be peeling ginger Grin

AuntieDolly · 02/08/2023 20:34

Teaspoon is a game changer

campervaner · 02/08/2023 20:51

Teaspoon, easy!

greenteaandmarshmallows · 02/08/2023 20:52

How do you use a spoon

As in how do you use a spoon to peel it?

Konfetka · 02/08/2023 20:53

Jar of lazy ginger, problem solved.

Takacupokindnessyet · 02/08/2023 20:56

I peel but more often I just use the frozen stuff

DuploTrain · 02/08/2023 21:05

I grate both garlic (unpeeled) and ginger. The fibrous bits/peel stay on the outside of the grater.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 02/08/2023 22:00

I always peel, if I buy it.

But I normally buy the bags of frozen stuff.
