to still book our DS (16) as a 15 year old at a Premier Inn?

I’m probably going to get a flaming for this but here goes.

We only have DS, he can’t stay in a PI by himself until he’s 18. If we booked him in as an adult, as he’s classed as one now he’s 16, we’d have to pay for another room. So for now, while we can still just about get away with it, we book him in as a child stating he’s 15.

In one PI where we’ve stayed many times over the years, a couple of the regular staff are aware but they’re ok with this. He doesn’t get up for breakfast so doesn’t benefit from the ‘kids eat free’ deal.

AIBU to carry on doing this for as long as we can get away with it? Not that he’ll likely still want to come away with us in the next few years.

My personal opinion is that on the one hand they class 18+ as adults but want to charge a 16 year old adult prices.

Its lying, but hey if you are ok with that!

If you have ever watched House, you will know that everybody lies.

MinnieTruck · 03/08/2023 09:37

What’s the point in making this type if thread? You’re still going to book him in as a child aren’t you? Seems like you just want to have a bit of back and forth with other people over your decision

VioletOrange · 03/08/2023 09:24

How will letting my now 16 year old DS, who a few months ago could stay in exactly the same bed within the rules, push up prices for everyone else?
And low league shoplifting? Give over! 😆

The drama over a few months is actually hilarious OP. And comparing it to shoplifting ffs - only on MN

Think these threads show who was grassing up their neighbours during lockdown 🤣🤣

WannaBeRecluse · 03/08/2023 09:42

My father used to do this all the time, everywhere, and I hated it so much. I hated being asked to lie for him and felt horrible. I have never once done this with my own kids just because I remember how it made me feel.

Get off your high horse He's not having the free breakfast

If you’d actually bothered to read properly, you would have seen I was reply to the poster who said her 17 year son did eat the kids’ breakfast.

Fraud, theft, whatever legal term.. it is lying and being dishonest and taking stuff without paying. And it is shocking to see so many people to think taking goods you haven’t paid for is acceptable.

And to say just because some are honest, have integrity and don’t think they are so full of such self importance the rules don’t apply to them and wouldn’t do this, they would do well in a fascist state is pathetic.

I dread to think what other things do you all take without paying for just because you don’t agree with the policy. Do you take 3 for the price of 1 rather than 2 because you don’t agree with Tesco’s 3 for 2 policy? Would you go into a restaurant and leave without paying the bill? Same principle.

Anyport · 03/08/2023 10:14

If you are concerned about it one of you go and book in. Phone your partner and son and tell them which room you are in. They walk in past the desk and go to the room.

Missingpup · 03/08/2023 09:18

The likes of @ZeldaWillTellYourFortune

name calling and profoundly judgemental

but thinks she’s the bee knees because she follows rules set by hotel a management to the letter

More likely she is just honest.

You have the choice to go elsewhere if you don’t agree with what Premier Inn say, but no you’d rather lie and steal. Peachy.

Oh I expect we shop lift, steal from old peoples purses, mug teenagers, take money from our children’s money boxes, take from our parents.

I mean if you nick a breakfast from the PI buffet cart (which has a shocking amount of waste), you’re definitely void of any morals whatsoever.

It's not the same at all. Food at Tesco costs the same whoever is eating it. What actual difference does it make to premier inn whether a teenager is 15/16/17?

ThereIbledit · 03/08/2023 10:27

I think I'd do the same as you to be honest.

Just a thought though - at Travelodge you can have as many adults as you like in a room, and he could sleep on the trundle bed for no extra charge or just a small charge. Is there one of those near where you want to go that you could switch to?

Absolutely - I mean there’s a fine line between having a couple of hash browns and a croissant when you’re a few weeks past your 16th birthday and mugging old grannies and robbing the post office in a balaclava.

What’s the point in making any type of thread in AIBU, of course there’s going to be differing opinions but when posters are being called scabs, grifters, shoplifters, fraudsters, no morals etc, then absolutely there will be a bit of back and forth!

I feel a Cher song coming on.

The travel lodge v premier inn question - very much depends on the individual hotel . Some of the PIs are getting a little tired now and I would say a new or refurb room in a TL is as good . But the newer PIs with aircon a plus when the windows don't open fully - and some have room fridge too . I know a couple of PIs in good positions though - sea view if you are able to phone and book particular rooms .

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 03/08/2023 10:41

Newbutoldfather · 03/08/2023 09:12

I am afraid it is fraud, albeit very minor.

I am not sure that I see it tremendously differently to low league shoplifting from big chains, apparently victimless, but in reality it just increases prices for everyone else.

No one obliges you to stay at PI but, if you do, you should surely abide by their rules. You can always use smaller chains or individual hotels, where you would have more negotiating power.

Exactly.

You wonder what other cheating these scamsters do.

VioletOrange · 03/08/2023 10:46

@FerretFumbler if it makes you feel any better I’ve just paid FULL adult price for DS’s train fare. Yes I do need to buy a 16/17 saver pass but you know the real bugbear and irony, he could still travel as a CHILD if we were travelling with him, as our Friends and family travel pass allows him to still travel at the child discounted rate!

I think some posters and I must be different species

not for one second would I feel guilty about this.

and I also don’t get those who do this but then say they would never do the free breakfast option.

Some of us have good character and integrity.

It's not fascist to consider it wrong to cheat. If you don't like what an establishment offers, go elsewhere. It's a free market.

My point is, you’ve done it before and you’re going to do it anyway. You expected a bit of backlash so it’s like you knew what was coming. Why post in that situation, it doesn’t actually make sense

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/08/2023 10:52

To be honest - I think people who post on here just to make people feel bad about themselves are morally worse than someone who has let their 16 year old go for a 15 year old price or saved a breakfast muffin for later in the day.

76evie · 03/08/2023 10:52

My 18 year old has been 15 for the last 3 years when we stay at the premier inn 🤣.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/08/2023 10:54

@ZeldaWillTellYourFortune people with integrity don't post on a thread just to put people down.

But if we're just being honest that we wouldn't do it ourselves? I mean, I can honestly say I never have and never would. I don't care if OP does it though. Not my concern.

Of course I’m going to keep doing it but it’s good to gauge opinion on these type of threads.

AIBU is a question isn’t it, any topic allowed to be asked? The majority of posters are in fact stating IANBU, therefore there is a point to the thread.

I don’t understand posts such as yours. Why bother posting without an opinion on the question asked, it makes no sense. Go and have a cuppa and read Chat instead.
