My dog ate my visitors shoes 👟

I work as a private tutor- mum and daughter just came for their appointment. I have a young rescue Viszla, I put him out the back as he can be boisterous especially when people visit.

on arrival they had taken off their shoes which was very courteous of them, but I hadn’t asked them to and hadn’t noticed as I had turned around whilst showing them into my teaching room.

During my lesson, the dog had been let in (by either DH or one of the children) and unbeknownst to anyone taken the shoes into the living room.

I wondered why the mum looked confused when it was time to leave and then noticed she wasn’t wearing shoes, I walked in to the living room and one of her shoes was completely demolished with bits of sole and laces all over the floor.

I was obviously massively embarrassed and apologised profusely, thankfully he hadn’t eaten the daughters Nike trainers. I offered to reimburse the mum but she said not to worry as they weren’t expensive. She did giggle but I realise she was probably just being polite.

What made it worse was it was raining and she had to hop to the car in her one remaining shoe, avoiding puddles.

Do you think she’ll come back? Is there anything else I should do to make this ok?

At least offer the next session for free!

OP you have shown exceptional forbearance in the face of some obtuse, wrong and blatantly provocative comments here.

You've done all you can. It was an unfortunate but minor incident that everyone has put behind them now. Enjoy your pupil.

She’s already done all that.

at least read the OPs updates!

@Qwerty21

If a dog is a bottomless pit that eats anything, then it is a bottomless pits that eats anything. You can't train that out of it it.

OP, I would honestly just laugh if this happened to me.

This has made my morning 🤣

FrenchBullFrog · 02/08/2023 07:03

I’d have found it funny but I don’t wear expensive shoes. You apologised and offered to pay for them, there is nothing else you can do. Bloody dogs 😂 my frenchie used to piss in visitors shoes

I think you've reacted appropriately. The mum has drawn a line under and so should you. I'd take my shoes off when entering people's home as second nature. If I know beforehand they have animals I tend to keep them on.

I may have missed a couple posts, but if you still have the destroyed shoe, you know the size and style. I would replace. Not offer, just go ahead and do it.

Roiesin57 · 02/03/2024 04:03

Did they come back for more lessons op?

PleaseStopCallingMeAl · 02/03/2024 05:33

How odd, this is from Aug 2023 and has been resurrected. I'm sure the dog will be fully trained by now.

I'd message and say something along the lines of.. "I'm mortified that Steve ate your shoes! I know you say they weren't expensive but please let me get you a new pair!"

I'm not sure if they will come back either way.. If you're a good tutor then it's worth them coming back.

Completely agree with this. It's not just about the cost of the shoes, it shows that you're a decent person. You can get your DH and kids to contribute.

I am sorry, I did not notice the date!
