To be pissed off with seatbelts?

I'm clearly doing something wrong as in every car I've had I'm strangled by my seatbelt. It always seems to ride up and find its way around my neck.

What am I doing wrong?

My new car doesn't have an adjustment mechanism on the B pillar. My previous much older one - same make, ancestral model of the current one - did.

Does that work in the driver's seat? The description only mentions back seats.

I use it on mine, would depend on the width of your seat back I think. There's an installation video on Amazon here if it helps to gauge it :)

It’s funny how companies fall over themselves to make “women’s” versions of things that are exactly the same as men’s but more expensive and pink. Wouldn’t it be more sensible to make eg women’s cars which are designed for our bodies and could prevent us dying? Sensible but probably not profitable.

As I said upthread, raising the driver's seat when you're short takes you up away from the pedals, so you can't reach to press the clutch. Obviously we've tried that

How? I’m 5’ even. Never had this problem as the seat goes forward as well as up. You would have to be significantly under 5’ to have this issue, although I appreciate some people are. I once spoke to someone with achondroplasia, and they had a vehicle modified with hand levers instead of foot pedals, but obviously you need to really be short for that as an option!

Our nanny is a bit over 5’ but has quite small feet and can’t rest her heel on the ground to press the brake/accelerator as her feet aren’t big enough. She definitely can’t raise the seat as it would make a not particularly comfortable driving position even worse.

Cars are all different. My Toyota Yaris is fine but many cars I've driven are not. Of course the seat goes forward! Putting the seat higher in many cars can be counter productive as I explained. You've not experienced it directly, but I assure you it can be a problem.

I would love to find a safe solution to this. It's bad enough in my car, but in our motorhome it's really bad (probably because it's a converted lorry). I spend the entire time we're driving having to hold the seat belt off my neck. Not fun on a month long trip!

Appreciate this. But this is why you test drive cars you are going to buy, surely. I have several decades on the click and never had this issue with a car I have, it would be something weeded out when looking for a car. Maybe if someone was in a position of having to drive a random work car or whatnot for sure, otherwise don’t buy a car that doesn’t have the required features for a short person?

Well yes I obviously do that and that's why I settled on my Yaris. It seems that many don't. You clearly don't have choice travelling as a passenger though, or if you're sharing a car with someone else. OP asked the question! 🤷‍♀️

What if you're not buying a car, or have a tight budget? I can hardly expect anyone who's car I go in regularly/ for long trips to buy a car to suit my needs.

Mumofmaxiemo · 10/08/2024 10:28

I'm just on 6ft and I have the same issue as I'm very large in the chest and small in the waist so my belt naturally rest against my chest at an odd angle and cut into my neck on long drives I've adjusted the belt at the cartridge many times I'm contemplating a diffrent car as my OH car (big suv) dosnt do it as much .

Butwhybecause · 10/08/2024 10:31

In our old car I discovered that the seat belt holder could be adjusted where the belt comes out, top left, which helped.

In DH's new car it won't adjust and yes, it cuts across my neck. I think I need a booster seat and I'm 5'4"!

My car's a Yaris and it's fine, it's DH's car which has a seatbelt problem and I'm often a passenger in that one. He's much taller than me.
