To be pissed off with seatbelts?

I'm clearly doing something wrong as in every car I've had I'm strangled by my seatbelt. It always seems to ride up and find its way around my neck.

What am I doing wrong?

All these gadgets people are linking to don't actually show HOW they work? Also whether they're confirmed as safe to actually attach to the seatbelt? Incidentally, years ago I wrote to the AA to ask if they had any advice on minimum chest to steering wheel distance, for safety in the event of a collision/airbags etc. The reply was 15cm from chest to wheel was the closest it should be but preferably as far away as possible. (I might contact them again to check this is still relevant actually.)

Thanks for the recommendations I'll have a look tomorrow.

Please be careful with adding random things that you've bought from amazon etc to your seatbelt.

If they adjust the position of the lap belt, or put pressure on the lap belt by using it to pull the shoulder belt down, they are definitely not safe.

The best option is the seatbelt covers that make it feel less rough and help it to grip onto clothing as some people have suggested. Also of course any adjustments that can be made to the seat or the belt which are built into the car.

Agree that it's shit that safety products are made based on the average male (this also doesn't suit un-average males, though) but don't shoot yourself in the foot by making it even more unsafe.

There is now a female crash test dummy, so maybe this will improve in future:

Interesting picture there Bertie. I notice the anchorage is very low down and behind...

Im 5'10 (and well endowed) and the seat belt starts off between my breasts but always rides up over my left breast and ends up cutting into my neck, so im constantly tugging in back into place. However, my partner, who is 5'7 never has an issue when driving the same car. Same issues in both his and my cars

Same. I’m 5’9” with big boobs, DH is 5’10” and no boobs.

YukoandHiro · 03/08/2023 08:05

You must be short like me.

Put the driver's seat to its highest setting.

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 03/08/2023 09:11

In some card you can also adjust the position of the steering wheel.

thecatsthecats · 03/08/2023 09:13

I am the height of the global average man, and if it helps, it still doesn't work around my massive tits.

Georgyporky · 03/08/2023 09:41

The gadget I recommended upthread clips onto the belt close to the door post. It holds the belt away from the body (your choice of distance) for comfortable driving, but it does not prevent the belt locking in an emergency.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/08/2023 09:59

Can you adjust the height of your seat?

TattyOne · 03/08/2023 10:02

I'm 5'1, not a driver but a passenger and they mangle the left side of my neck, it's painful and uncomfortable, I'm forever having to un-mangle and adjust, like every few seconds!

I wish there was some other design that's comfortable!

I've tried those soft padded things that can be attached to them and can't get on with them!

Dukeydo · 03/08/2023 10:05

Ponderingwindow · 01/08/2023 16:00

The strap always shifts to between the breasts and that aligns it with the neck. No amount of adjusting can fight that.

The design is inherently flawed.

This. Height doesn’t matter it’s the size of your breasts. They need to come up with a better design.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/08/2023 09:59

Can you adjust the height of your seat?

We short people have tried it all. If you raise your seat height, short legs can't reach the pedals properly to depress the clutch. The bottom line is, seatbelts usually cut across your neck if you're short with big boobs. No amount of adjustments help.

I spend the journey holding it slightly down.

While driving?

@Cazzovuoi and white men bodies are different how?

Asian men are, on average, smaller than white men.

As I said upthread, raising the driver's seat when you're short takes you up away from the pedals, so you can't reach to press the clutch. Obviously we've tried that!

Aplume · 03/08/2023 10:14

You're female. That's what you're doing wrong. With seatbelts and with life in general.

rainbowzebra05 · 03/08/2023 10:29

I use this now, also considered a diono sure fit but they're designed for kids so I was worried about my boobs causing issues with fit! Even with the shoulder guide as low as possible I still end up garrotted otherwise!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 03/08/2023 10:34

Does that work in the driver's seat? The description only mentions back seats.

Verv · 03/08/2023 10:38

Boobs. Honestly.
Big boobs will ping the belt up to strangle you, smaller boobs wont.

HoppingPavlova · 03/08/2023 10:41

Strange. I’m 5ft nothing and they don’t strangle me. I adjust the seatbelt height downwards- which cars have had standard for donkeys years now. Are you not adjusting your seat belts?

Yep, same. I’ve never been strangled by one as I always adjust the seatbelt height down (can’t recall ever being in a car without this so assume standard?), AND raise the height of the chair. So, I can drive with a good fit and, for example, DH over 6’ can drive the same car with a good fit also, simply by raising the seatbelt height and lowering the chair - he also moves the chair back as obviously his legs are longer. Adjustable chairs are also standard in cars, they have to be.

HoppingPavlova · 03/08/2023 10:46

How? I’m 5’ even. Never had this problem as the seat goes forward as well as up. You would have to be significantly under 5’ to have this issue, although I appreciate some people are. I once spoke to someone with achondroplasia, and they had a vehicle modified with hand levers instead of foot pedals, but obviously you need to really be short for that as an option!
