Overweight Brits abroad

I know this will upset people but it’s time to face facts and I’m talking about myself here too. Just got back from second holiday abroad this year when once again it was painfully noticeable how overweight British people are compared to our European neighbours. We stand out a mile! Every time I saw someone fat I’d wait for it and…. British accent. We look a state and it’s time to do something about it. No wonder the NHS is on its knees. I came back more determined than ever to lose weight.

Sounds like the shittest holiday ever just hovering around fat people waiting for them to speak.

Love this! 😂😂😂

BringOnSummerHolidays · 01/08/2023 11:02

I don't think British looks especially overweight compared to Europeans. Wait till you go on a holiday in Japan and South Korea.

Dragon49 · 01/08/2023 11:02

I think many responses speak for themselves and how many people are on medication because of their weight in the first place. So often people who decide to lose weight no longer have diabetes and no longer require medication. Seeing a neighbour over 20 stone having had 2 hip and knee replacements in the last 2 years but still sat in their armchair eating take aways every day is a typical example of the cost to the NHS but have they changed their life style habits no. Are they trying to be more active now they have had ops costing over £30,000 no. With several medical family members we know hospitals are broken because of people’s inability to make sensible life style choices…..

Obesity is on the rise in the rest of Europe too. Other countries might be behind, but they're catching up. It might be worth considering what it is in our societies that's creating an obesogenic environment and what we can do collectively to combat it. Individually, people don't have long-term success in maintaining weight loss. We can't keep attributing obesity to personal failures, because that isn't working.

The NHS is not on its knees. It’s on its arse, on the sofa, watching TV and too fat to get up and get on with some surgery to cut down the waiting lists.

The waiting lists wouldn’t be such a disgrace if people lived a healthier life.
That could start with exercise, healthy eating and losing weight.
Those who clapped for them during the pandemic should now take a long look at themselves and actually do something to change the way we have become.

Many illnesses are caused by life choices…we need to change that.

Orangetreexherry · 01/08/2023 11:06

It is normal to notice around what is in your mind/concern - for example, when I was pregnant, I paid an attention to how many pregnant women were around, so I completely understand, since the OP said she is overweight herself, why she spotted people with extra weight.

Arniesleftleg · 01/08/2023 11:08

Let's face it, over a third of the worlds population are overweight! Cheap ultra processed foods, quick to cook, quick to eat. A lot of people see cooking from scratch as a chore, but that's not to say scratch cooked food is better if the portion sizes are ridiculously big.
When did supersize this and extra large that become the norm? When I was a kid at school, we only had one or two overweight kids in the whole school, now it seems its half the class. It really does come down to ultra processed, ultra fast, low nutrient foods. Everyone is super busy but we all need to wake up and see how sick the world is becoming.

Middle aged Spanish women are not tiny.

They really are I'm a busty UK size 12. I struggle to find clothes in Spain. My friends are all middle aged Spaniards. They're tiny ! Of course you get some exceptions but generally they're tiny

Ok, but we don't make choices in a vacuum. People want to believe they are immune to outside influences, that they're totally independently-minded but we are all susceptible. So what's driving so many people to make these bad choices? Why, when they do lose weight through hard work and discipline, do most people regain it and more besides? What drives us back to those unhealthy choices time and time again?

The PP's neighbour eating takeaways in an armchair and having repeated surgery - is that a life someone wants? Does anyone actively aim for that? So why keep making choices that lead them there? Something is making the whole world fatter - what are the factors? Spontaneous moral decline? Or is it to do with the world around us?

It's on the curriculum.
They are taught how to cook healthy meals

Ah okay, that’s good. Maybe it’s better now. I don’t remember any particularly healthy meals being cooked when I was at school.

Just back from a week in Mykonos, OP. (Had a lovely time). Didn’t notice any overweight Brits. I wasn’t looking for them though. There were plenty of strange lips though.

Oh gosh yes the lips Smile

unsync · 01/08/2023 11:12

It is usually the sunburn, tattoos and football strip that identifies them where I am. Still, the upside is that I can give them a swerve.

Iseeall · 01/08/2023 09:10

Let us see what you look like.

😂😂😂

Angrywife · 01/08/2023 11:13

I remember going to Florida 30yrs ago and being utterly shocked at the size of some people. Weights we (my partner and I) had never seen anything like in the UK, and families all over weight, we were shook!

Now it's common place here too, I can go to Asda and have the same experience I had in Florida all those years ago.

The hardest part to understand is how acceptable society is trying to make it. "Fat is beautiful" campaigns, etc. You may be a beautiful person but there's no getting away from the fact that fat is dangerous and can be deadly. We shouldn't be normalising it.

And yes I too am over weight

Who on this thread is 'on medication because of their weight in the first place'? Can you quote those who are?

Yes please explain.
Because I was a size 8 at diagnosis.
And many others on this thread have told a similar story

ChristmasKraken · 01/08/2023 11:16

I'm currently in France, at a holiday site where we're one of the few British families here. I can assure you that there are many, many overweight French people here.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/08/2023 11:16

Do something about your weight then, OP. Nothing more to be said.

Wheresthebeach · 01/08/2023 11:16

Ultra processed food is a massive health issue, as is being overweight (the two issues are linked - high calorie, low nutrient food) . It's a societal issue that needs dealing with for a number of reasons.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 01/08/2023 11:17

I mean, you're right, but I'm not sure what you hope you get out of this thread @Artyfart? Mumsnetters even in hordes can't actually do anything about it?

Well assuming your constantly staring at the scenery and art that you are constantly bump into people in the museums streets, restaurants etc?, has this caused any injuries to you or others?.

I hope the locals aren't put out by you banging into then as you stare in wonder at the buildings, cars and bins.

Or you can somehow see overwight people as you walk round, laze by the hotel/beach, check in to hotels and sit in restaurants,

I just don't notice other people's weight. I'm not on a trip to play Spot The Fatty or Guess Fatty's Nationality.

The bins in Manchester are lovely by the way, they've got little bees on them 😊
