Overweight Brits abroad

1000 replies

Artyfart · 01/08/2023 08:57

I know this will upset people but it’s time to face facts and I’m talking about myself here too. Just got back from second holiday abroad this year when once again it was painfully noticeable how overweight British people are compared to our European neighbours. We stand out a mile! Every time I saw someone fat I’d wait for it and…. British accent. We look a state and it’s time to do something about it. No wonder the NHS is on its knees. I came back more determined than ever to lose weight.

No one owes you thinness or health.

They don't but they DO owe it to themselves. It's a tragedy how many people have been gaslit into celebrating poor health.

Stomacharmeleon · 01/08/2023 10:46

@BlossomCloud I am another who ballooned due to steroids. I have crohns and was on 100mg for over five years. I developed cushings as well... had a buffalo hump across the back.

I came off them one mg a week. And lost nearly eight stone. Still have osteopenia and other issues but they were killing me. I had ulcers all over my body, my legs would weep and I could barely move. I had to give up work.

I would be very wary of taking them again. And I was constantly stared at.... not helped by the fact I had a massive tumour on one side of my stomach too.

Rotterdam · 01/08/2023 10:47

Maybe you should direct your comments at the food industry and in particular their promotion of ‘healthy’ processed food. Trying to blame overweight people for greed is ridiculous. Our diet has completely changed since the 1960s.

Fuckthatguy · 01/08/2023 10:47

@x2boys it’s well known the British are sunscreen avoidant

Amniceandgenuine · 01/08/2023 10:47

HNRTFT but am guessing you are as bored this morning as you were on holiday!
I genuinely go on holiday to relax and not clock peoples weight or accent/ language.

I'm just astounded by all the people on this thread who go on holidays and day trips and spend their time observing people's weight.

When I go on trips I'm far too busy looking at art, enjoying the scenery, reading, going to the theatre or whatever to notice other people. What dull lives these people must lead.

you are very intellectual 🙄, they are not.

Cocktopus · 01/08/2023 10:49

Totally agree with you but the fact so many replies have had a pop at you goes to show the real problem with todays society is ‘no one wants to take responsibility for themselves as individuals whether fat, thin, smoker, non smoker etc’. Much easier to blame someone or something else or point out where another country has a problem that is worse

Many of the people who have disagreed (not 'had a pop') with the OP have pointed out that their weight gain is due to medication, or illness, or EDs.

Is this what you mean by 'blaming something else'?

And do you feel it's okay to judge all fat people, indiscriminately?

Artyfart · 01/08/2023 10:49

There are many, many reasons people are overweight. I’m fat because I work about 60 hours a week and don’t have time to cook from scratch or exercise so end up eating shit and snacking. That’s the culture I’ve found myself in.
when I’ve been in Europe, it’s noticeable that more people are cycling and although the restaurants served rich food, the culture of cooking and eating was just so different to ours. At one point in a small city we were looking for a supermarket type shop to get the kids some fruit and realised there just wasn’t any - round every corner was a fresh food market instead and this is where everyone was doing their shopping. I’m not pointing blame at individuals, it is almost entirely due to the general culture/ poverty / life choices etc caused by the government but I can at least take responsibility for myself and admit I could change my habits.

We don't have a lot of sun....

I'm far from intellectual 😂 I just make sure I go on trips to places where there's more to interest me than the weight of passersby.

Maybe OP and co could do the same!

justasking111 · 01/08/2023 10:51

We were in the Caribbean one day watched the American cruise ships come in to do the tours. We were amazed when the crews carried out all these segways and enormously overweight people used them to get around.

I haven't seen that in the UK yet

MysteryPop · 01/08/2023 10:51

bluebell34567 · 01/08/2023 10:46

i didnt hear French or Italians are obese.
especially it is interesting with Italians with their love of pasta and pizza.
i think they dont snack much.

Obesity is rising everywhere. We are past the days of French Women Don't Get Fat. Whatever is changing in the way people live is changing everywhere across the world.

I am so sorry. It is horrible how you try and fight one nasty condition, end up with loads of savage side effects from steroids and then get judged for the weight gain they cause on top of everything else.

I don't see why people are trying to shut this conversation down. Maybe it makes them feel uncomfortable to realise they shouldn't make blanket judgements. Maybe they like the kick they get from assuming they are better than fat people

Fuckthatguy · 01/08/2023 10:52

@Cocktopus there was an observation that there is an enormous disproportionate number of overweight British people compared to the rest of Europe.

Unless you are walking around with blinkers and total lack of awareness for your surroundings when something is so overtly obviously then it’s hard not to notice these things.

You can of course choose to ignore them but OP asked a reasonable question based on her observations.

People are judgemental, that’s just human nature.

Well assuming your constantly staring at the scenery and art that you are constantly bump into people in the museums streets, restaurants etc?, has this caused any injuries to you or others?.

I hope the locals aren't put out by you banging into then as you stare in wonder at the buildings, cars and bins.

Or you can somehow see overwight people as you walk round, laze by the hotel/beach, check in to hotels and sit in restaurants,

Oh no, the word 'celebrating' has come up! What form does this celebration of poor health take, by the way? I haven't ever seen anyone celebrate it.

Wahwahwahwahwah · 01/08/2023 10:55

Yeah I definitely agree with the PP who said that the sunburnt people are pretty much all Brits. It's bloody awful. There are SO many bright red families, even the kids are burnt 😕.
Have seen quite a few overweight Brits but also Germans. I don't really think the Brits have been noticeably bigger. There haven't been any big French people that I've noticed but contrary to what I've read on here before the families who are letting their kids run wild and annoy people in the restaurants have ALL been French speaking. Ha! 😁

Triptastico · 01/08/2023 10:56

heartofglass23 · 01/08/2023 10:37

Thin Brits don't do med beach holidays! Don't you read MN! 😁

They're all on Mark Warner/Neilson holidays with their sporty kids.

Either that or it's Sani/Ikos where you not allowed to book if your more than a size 10. Wink

Fuckthatguy · 01/08/2023 10:56

@x2boys but the countries the British holiday abroad in do.

UVA/B damage doesn’t require bright sunlight, and you know there are UK heatwaves every summer.

Well said.
We are all capable of seeing more than what’s in front of our faces.

Grannyknowsbest · 01/08/2023 10:58

I go abroad a good few times a year to different countries.. don't know where you went but loads of Greeks and Cypriots are more overweight than the British.

CherryCokeFanatic · 01/08/2023 10:59

The NHS is not on its knees. It’s on its arse, on the sofa, watching TV and too fat to get up and get on with some surgery to cut down the waiting lists.

Dreamersdontdie · 01/08/2023 11:01

I don't know if it makes that much of a difference but a lot of Southern European people I know hold strong beliefs on staying attractive to their partner/ spouse. This lasts right up until old age. Whilst in the UK and my personal belief is that you should love your partner for who they are, whether they're in joggers in need of a shower or five stone heavier.

loulouljh · 01/08/2023 11:01

The whole nation is hugely over weight...what would have been shocking even only 10 years ago is not now. Waddling people. It is a crisis.
