Fed up of being creative: what are your blandest recipes

Whattodonut · 31/07/2023 22:00

I'm really getting fed up of being creative. I make nice interesting food that tastes great and gets eaten with no comment. Clean plates but only feedback is when its bad.

So I'd like to do is just do an experiment on the family of a few weeks of really bland ( no herbs, no spices) meals and see if there is any reaction.

Trouble is DD is now vegetarian so needs to include some kind of veggie protein.

All ideas welcome! I will be repeating lots of them as part of the boring experiment. Extra points if they are incredibly low effort to make.

They like veg. So lots of veg is good. But just very bland.

Ratatouille with no seasoning and the cheapest possible tinned tomatoes. If you want veggie protein, stick in some beans.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/07/2023 22:06

Cauliflower cheese and jacket potatoes. Bland but delicious.

Bought pies with mash and frozen peas

Macaroni cheese

Quorn korma

My Gran used to make us cheese and egg. It’s literally a load of grated cheese on a dinner plate, a well in the middle into which you crack an egg, then you bake it in the oven until all the cheese has melted and the egg is cooked. Watch out - the plate will be very, very hot.

Problem is that it’s not actually bland - it’s pretty bloody amazing.

Leeds2 · 31/07/2023 22:11

Omelettes with, say mushrooms and sweetcorn, and a side of lettuce and tomato salad.
Frozen pizza (defrosted and cooked first!).
Minestrone soup.
Pasta and a jar of Ragu sauce.

Vergingontheridiculous · 31/07/2023 22:12

Spaghetti olio è aglio. No protein, but that's ok every now and again. Actually delicious so may not make your point 😂

Delia has a version of these she calls "Alpine Eggs"

When I was little we had it and called it a Cheese Burner.

Whatever you call it it is a nice dish. If you like eggy, cheesy things.

Following with interest.

Surely jacket potatoes with beans, eggs and chips, and insipid blended veg soup of some kind (leek and potato?) fit the bill?

Summerrainstorminagain · 31/07/2023 22:13

Chicken risotto - onions, garlic, chicken, stock and rice. Nothing else.

Whattodonut · 31/07/2023 22:14

So much of this sounds really nice!

Ratatouille is a good call with no herbs or flavours. And boiled to death.

I think you're all a bit too creative!

How about a plate of oven chips?

😉

Whattodonut · 31/07/2023 22:18

My kids would be really happy with oven chips or frozen pizza... so would I most of the time but it would be like a treat to them as we don't usually have it.

I should have said- needs to be healthy and bland! 😀

Pasta with a tin of tomatoes as sauce

Iceberg lettuce, cheapest tomato, cucumber and egg salad (no dressing)

Rice, tuna and peas mixed together.

Poached chicken breast, boiled potatoes and the iceberg lettuce salad

Parsleymint · 31/07/2023 22:18

Cut out herbs, garlic, onions, spices and no salt.
Pasta with grated cheese on top.
Risotto without onion or garlic.
I recently had a gastric problem which necessitated a bland diet for several weeks. I went for very plain meat and veg. So chicken, salmon or pork with new potatoes and piles of veg. Over and over with very minor variations.

libertybonds · 31/07/2023 22:19

Actually I could just recommend my daughter's diet.

She is willing to eat:
buttered spaghetti with peas (on the side)
hard boiled egg sandwiches (buttered bread, no seasoning)
boiled broccoli
cucumber slices
pancakes
Heinz tomato soup and toast
Pasta made with my special tomato sauce (just mix it with tomato paste after cooking - you have to retain a bit of pasta water and let it cook a bit to get it smooth)
Beans on toast
Scrambled eggs (no seasoning)
Macaroni cheese

@OrangesandLemons2023 you win!!

Cheese and potato pie and baked beans

Quisquam · 31/07/2023 22:52

Shepherds pie (lentils or Quorn I guess for Dd) with plenty of veg!

Stew - beans I guess instead of meat

Egg fried rice?

Roast dinner

Sealover123 · 31/07/2023 22:55

Cut large sweet potatoes in half, drizzle with a bit of oil. Roast till soft. Top with cheddar cheese and baked beans. Coleslaw and undressed salad mix on the side.

It's like a healthier jacket potato but still so yummy and satisfying! Super easy and comforting

BloodandGlitter · 31/07/2023 22:56

Pasta mixed with some butter then (vegetarian) fish fingers stirred through it. Add some sweetcorn and peas for health.

lightand · 31/07/2023 23:01

My kind of thread.

For days out we have a family tradition of tuna fish, onion and boiled egg sandwiches. All in one sandwich in case anyone thinks they would be separate sandwiches! Vinegar optional.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/07/2023 23:41

Omelettes. Add mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, onions, cheese, if you're really pushing the boat out.

Egg, cheese or beans on toast. Serve two of these if you're feeling really fancy.

Soup. Canned. Bottom of the fridge with lentils or other pulses. Canned or whatever ready made version is reduced in the supermarket.

Roasted aubergine dip, hummus and pitta bread.

At the weekend, fakeaway time. Cheese and tomato pizza, or the vegetable one with peppers, mushrooms and onions on, whichever is cheapest in Iceland.

ScribblingPixie · 31/07/2023 23:51

Baked tofu, plain rice, steamed vegetables. That would break me!

pizzaHeart · 01/08/2023 00:02

Pasta with grated cheese, boiled broccoli/ petit pois and cooked prawns ( on offer at Tesco atm)

Mashed potatoes with baked salmon or other fish or mashed potatoes with baked chicken drumsticks - put minimum of spices in both cases

Rice with frozen vegetable mix and grated cheese

baked potatoes with tuna mayonnaise/ prawn and sweetcorn mayonnaise

LuckyPeonies · 01/08/2023 00:29

Poached chicken, steamed veg, and plain white rice. All salt and spice free. 😁
Poached fish, boiled potatoes, plain salad.
Jacket potatoes, cottage cheese, sliced tomatoes.
Plain beans and toast.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 01/08/2023 00:36

DHs real favourite meal is sausage beans and mash. Probably too nice. Boiled potatoes and boiled veg with overcooked pork chops maybe? Or with those frozen fish squares?
