Aibu to think this was a premeditated attempted theft?

This morning I checked my ring cam. We live on a cul de sac. We have 1 Range Rover and one Porsche. At approximately midnight 3 opportunists walked down our road and grouped on the corner of the road.

Then they seemed to split off one then started to walk near to my car then hid behind it quickly as my neighbours walked to the window. Then just ran as soon as they’d been seen. The back camera wasn’t turned on but it detected motion which leads me to think they jumped my fence.

My husband left his car at his brothers but was actually in. We both were asleep but no one on our street was, as it was a Saturday. It’s lucky we have such amazing neighbours as they rang me immediately but stupidly my phone was on silent and so was my husbands but by morning they blocked my car in.

It seems odd to me as this happened when hubbys car wasn’t there. But also I wonder if it was targeted?

I spoke to my Aunty who lives 10 mins away and she seems to think it was just because we’re an end corner home, however I totally disagree as my hubby said they may have watched us before. She’s quite old so doesn’t really get it.

Aibu for disagreeing with my Aunty?

Either of you can be right and not sure why her age is relevant? it is not a competition of who is right or not - if this all actually happened

Yes it happened Saturday early hours.

Why do people keep saying that on threads where there’s nothing to suggest it wouldn’t happen ?

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/07/2023 02:54

Probably

PimpMyFridge · 31/07/2023 02:54

Sounds like they want your cars to me.
My parents live in secluded position on their road and have been burgled once with two more attempts while others in the road have had nothing. So tempting target combined with sheltered position does make for a greater risk of being selected for this.
I'd be trying to increase deterrent measures in your situation.

Keeping a close eye and neighbors are on watch too. I’ve purchased more cameras and files a police report. My intuition tells me I’ve been watched. As it took place when hubbys car was gone. Also it seems odd that they’d want the cars but also jump my fence. It’s pretty frightening

Definitely targeted for the cars. Look up most stolen/hijacked cars in UK. Apparently thieves are finding new ways in locating the cars they want.

Also Google why I can't insure my Range Rover in London.

Glad you are all okay.

Really scary actually. As much as I laugh it off. I’ve been worried about even going out with my friends. I chose to stay in. Do you think they monitored us. I also tried to look at footage and they’re in all black

Laugh it off was definitely the wrong turn of phrase. I meant try to forget.

Have you got a motion sensor light? May help as a deterrent

Yeah. A very bright flood light plus neighbors staring at them. Didn’t really deter

I imagine it's the cars - nobody is going to try to steal my ancient Mazda. Nobody gets much chance though because it is locked up securely in a garage and out of sight. I am surprised you have such expensive cars without garaging. They may have simply driven around looking for places with expensive cars rather than actually having some long term watching. Do you at least have the cars alarmed?

Redglitter · 31/07/2023 04:11

The fact it happened when your husbands car wasn't there suggests your car is their main target, rather than you They probably have no idea who owns it. All they'd be interested in is the car

6WeekCountdown · 31/07/2023 05:30

They will have scoped in the day, our neighbours had an attempt a while ago (they have high powered BMWs attractive to thieves), they went around the back and smashed their door in, but my neighbours woke and chased them away, they'd hopped fences and deffo planned it to know where to go to gain access. They now have super cctv and caught someone scoping in the day, so they now block their cars in (they have 4 so use their kids cheaper cars). I was waking at every sound outside all week after, almost waiting for it. I would stepup security and consider getting a penguin bollard, my in-laws friends drive a porsche and have one as an extra deterrent. My in laws also do the block in trick, both cars are bmws but my fil's is much more £££. They've had the same thing too, attempted break in around the back for keys. Again they got super cctv and stepped up security. Their garden is huge and not easily accessed so someone must have done their Google maps homework. Scary for you knowing they tried and could return, visible deterrents, security lights are a must and have your cameras on.

Totalwasteofpaper · 31/07/2023 05:36

100% targeted

My Nextdoor feed has about 5 videos like this (successful and unsuccessful attempts) every day.

porridgecake · 31/07/2023 05:49

Where I live Range Rovers are stolen to order every single night of the week. It is organised crime, very efficient. Loads of ring doorbell videos on the next door app every day.

VisionsOfSplendour · 31/07/2023 05:50

What is the relevance of your aunt in the situation? Theres no downside to being aware that your car might be stolen and increasing your security, why does it matter what she says?

I agree with a pp if you're worried about having a car thats attractive to thieves then change the car.

MistyMorningMelons · 31/07/2023 05:55

Range Rovers are prime targets and have been for years. A family member had theirs stolen off the drive.

Deloresadores · 31/07/2023 05:56

Do you think your aunty may actually be part of the conspiracy?

Sorry but you have cars which are stolen to order. I assume they both have trackers on? Can you garage them? Or have you got a drive where you can put one of those bollard things?

porridgecake · 31/07/2023 05:56

They know they won't be caught so they aren't bothered about being on camera. The police issue a crime number, the insurance coughs up, that's it.

GreenWheat · 31/07/2023 06:07

Yes of course, desirable cars out in the open attract theives, this can't be news to you, surely? This is why people keep expensive cars in garages. They are stolen to order.

SpottyUnicorn · 31/07/2023 06:23

They jumped the fence as they most likely need your car keys. A couple of my friends have lost their cars recently in a similar scenario- while the family has been in bed, someone has broken in through the back door, stolen their car keys and driven off.
They're not usually scared of cameras as their faces are covered and police are not able to do much.
You'll need to find a way to show the thieves that even if they got the keys, they'd struggle to drive off easily.

nomoretoriesforme · 31/07/2023 06:32

Same in Clapham, London. Range rovers are stolen daily , as posted on Nextdoor.
