Aibu to think this was a premeditated attempted theft?

This morning I checked my ring cam. We live on a cul de sac. We have 1 Range Rover and one Porsche. At approximately midnight 3 opportunists walked down our road and grouped on the corner of the road.

Then they seemed to split off one then started to walk near to my car then hid behind it quickly as my neighbours walked to the window. Then just ran as soon as they’d been seen. The back camera wasn’t turned on but it detected motion which leads me to think they jumped my fence.

My husband left his car at his brothers but was actually in. We both were asleep but no one on our street was, as it was a Saturday. It’s lucky we have such amazing neighbours as they rang me immediately but stupidly my phone was on silent and so was my husbands but by morning they blocked my car in.

It seems odd to me as this happened when hubbys car wasn’t there. But also I wonder if it was targeted?

I spoke to my Aunty who lives 10 mins away and she seems to think it was just because we’re an end corner home, however I totally disagree as my hubby said they may have watched us before. She’s quite old so doesn’t really get it.

Aibu for disagreeing with my Aunty?

I don't think they were looking to nick the car for environmental reasons

🤣

Easterdisaster2023 · 31/07/2023 10:10

It could have been premeditated, certain cars are stolen to order

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/07/2023 10:47

Ditto to an old fashioned Krooklok, or whatever they’re called now.

Anything to make thieves think ‘too much faff’ and look for another.
Just the other day I saw one in a high-value car near here - we live in an area with a lot of them, and a lot of car thieves.
Which is one reason I’m very happy with an ‘ordinary’ car.

ManateeFair · 31/07/2023 11:28

Does it actually matter? Your car wasn't nicked and if it had been nicked the outcome for you would have been the same whether it was premeditated or opportunist. Why are you bothered what your aunty thinks anyway?

Obviously not

shockthemonkey · 31/07/2023 12:06

Who blocked your car in? The neighbors or someone else? (don’t imagine it could’ve been the would-be thieves).

That bit seems weird unless it was just thrown in there like your aunty was.

PaterPower · 31/07/2023 12:52

Get a couple of wheel clamps and a steering lock as well - they won’t stop a determined thief, but you’re basically slowing them down and making it as unattractive a prospect as possible.

PizzaPastaWine · 31/07/2023 12:57

Land Rovers have been accessed via a fob that overides the locking system. I guess that may apply to Range Rovers too.

Coolblur · 31/07/2023 13:04

I think it's irrelevant who is in, how do they know who drives which car, or when the other person would return? It was the car they were targeting not you. This is based on the experience of having two desirable cars stolen from our driveway in the middle of the night when we were both in.

My advice is to keep your keys out of sight away from doors and windows. Our cars were stolen when they smashed a window to get the keys, which I suspect they saw through the letter box on a table near the front door. Lots of people think the best thing to do is make the keys accessible, but the Police advised that's not a good idea. The thieves don't want to break in and search your house for car keys while you're there, they want a quick 'smash and grab', get the keys and go.
Also get steering locks for your cars, I think Disklocks that cover the whole steering wheel are best. Might be a little inconvenient, but it's a whole lot less inconvenient than having your car stolen.

porridgecake · 31/07/2023 13:12

Like so much organised crime, there are no resources to tackle it. Insurance premiums are rocketing because it is just a free for all.

Annalisehm · 31/07/2023 13:13

I have a High performance mercedes and they tried mine they opened the door within 4seconds. He then sat in the car for nearly 3 minutes trying to start it but I have ghost on it which he couldn't bypass. You can deactivate the start stop on the range rover as my sister has done that to hers. I know the mercedes you pop the start stop button out and now you have to physically use the key to start it. Steering wheel locks they just angel grind of. Ghost is about £500 now but 100percent worth it x

We do have a climate emergency and these types of cars are adding to the problem, polluting our air and pumping carbon into the atmosphere.
You could get environmentally friendly cars instead.
Before you ask, I don't have a car.

And the award for the most pointless post of the day goes to......

Ahh man, seriously. Maybe you can stop eating vegan to protect the californian bees please.
Also do you mind stop posting on MN as that increases your carbon footprint.

Just tip me the nod If you want a range rover stolen to order for you.

( I have a mate in Clapham)

Bouledeneige · 31/07/2023 14:04

Yes you need to seriously upgrade your security. As everyone has said Range Rovers are the number one target for thieves as their security is so poor - they are described as by far the easiest car to nick. To be fair you and your DP have gone for two prime target cars.

Pix56 · 31/07/2023 14:10

I wouldn't bother investing in security. If they're set on stealing your car, they will have it off you as you pull up somewhere.

Personally, I'd sell the car and get something more mundane and isn't as attractive to steal.

shockthemonkey · 31/07/2023 20:57

Who Blocked Your Car In?

tenbob · 31/07/2023 21:01

@Rosewaterflame

Have you disabled keyless entry on your cars yet?

GrannyRose15 · 01/03/2024 11:31

You are lucky neither car was stolen. Thieves will find ways to steal or clone your car keys so they can take the car. Depends who they were as to whether you were targeted. Local yobs probably chancers. Out of town, older, more sophisticated may have been watching. Take precautions and take care.

Oh not again! I wish these threads wouldn't come up, spark my interest and then turn out to be ancient history. Though I am beginning to worry about the people who are telling me. Do you spend all day checking to see who has posted on out of date threads?

🙄 Yeah that's what I do

No I just see the date on the opening post is from last year's. Its just as simple as that. And people will point it out to try and prevent other people wasting time posting on a thread about something that was probably resolved almost a year ago

BobbyBiscuits · 01/03/2024 12:14

It's very common for thieves to recce their targets. They will have noticed your desirable cars no doubt. Also your Aunt is partly right in that if your home is also easier to access then it's a bonus for them. So both are probably true.
I'd be on high alert that's for sure. Good that your neighbours are supportive and hopefully they were spooked and won't come back.
