To think DD taking dog in the car every day is unfair?

We have a family dog who we only really take in the car for vet trips and to boarding when we go away or if we go away somewhere here with her. So maybe a few times a year.

DD takes her dog (she is 24 and doesn't live at home) in the car every single day to take to different nature spots. I definitely admire that and think it's nice the dog gets to explore a lot of places, but a dog going in the car every single day just seems so much.

Our family dog definitely doesn't find it a great experience, even if she doesn't mind it too much. I understand it isn't the case for every dog but she has admitted she gives her a little cuddle and treat before they get in the car as she can still be a bit nervous but that she is growing out of that/getting used to it.

AIBU to think this is a bit unfair on the dog? I guess it's not really that important, I'm just pondering it really.

It's true for the people I know, which is what I meant

Good lord! I have a car specifically for the dogs (mainly because of the mud and fur ).
They willingingly jump in it every day and we go different places for their walk because as far as I'm concerned, if I had to spend 20something hours a day in a house with nothing to read or watch or listen to, I would want the hours when I'm out and about to be full of new smells and friends and exciting sights.

What a strange post..

I liked to find different walks for my dog so the car was essential. I only had to rattle the car keys and he was by the front door like a rocket. He absolutely loved it.

Yabu sounds like they have a lovely time. If it was a human baby it might sound a bit much for everyday but this dog needs to run around in nature and will be very happy with all the new smells and sights to investigate

Really?

Do you live in the sticks so walk everywhere?

Everyone I know routinely takes their dog to places in the car. I'm about to put my dog in the car to go to my mums and go for a nice walk.

My dog loves going in the car, he only does it a couple of times a week but knows it means a much longer, more exciting walk, we just have to say "go in the car" and he runs off down the drive to jump in the back.

My old dog used to come literally everywhere in the car with me, to work, to places to walk, to friends/family, on holidays (he LOVED the beach) I think it’s an odd thing for you to think it’s unfair?

I kind of feel it’s a little unfair to have a dog and never take it anywhere, apart from walking distance places, one of the joys ours have is exploring new places, I think your DD is doing a bang up job.

We have 3 dogs now and they just hop in the car whenever we feel like it, but they don’t associate it with bad things so are happy to jump in, once dogs realise that it’s always a positive experience any nervous behaviour should disappear.

What do you do for holidays OP? We go everywhere in the UK and the dog always comes along whether it's an hour or 7 hours away. Most of the time he just sleeps. Wonderful family memories altogether ❤️

HappiestSleeping · 30/07/2023 16:15

My dog doesn't love the car, but does love the places he goes in it. He hasn't been sick or anything, but he just gives off that vibe of not loving it, until we arrive wherever we are going. It's better than leaving him behind.

@SirSidneyRuffDiamond Your dog is living his best life.

Here's my dog arriving at her favourite walking destination in the car. She has a special little hammock to keep her safe and a basket for kipping all the way home.

Different species but my horse used to run up the ramp into the horsebox and then turn around to face the tie ring as he associated the lorry with going somewhere fun - a beach ride, a new hack, a competition etc. Some horses flatly refuse to go on and have to have a lot of input desensitising them and build things up slowly so they are easy to load in the end. Same principle applies!

Your dog only goes in the car for the vets and the kennels, both negative experiences for the dog, no wonder they dont like the car.

Your DD takes her dog on lovely walks. Totally different kettle of fish

Zanatdy · 30/07/2023 21:14

It’s perfectly fine when they are used to it
