To think DD taking dog in the car every day is unfair?

We have a family dog who we only really take in the car for vet trips and to boarding when we go away or if we go away somewhere here with her. So maybe a few times a year.

DD takes her dog (she is 24 and doesn't live at home) in the car every single day to take to different nature spots. I definitely admire that and think it's nice the dog gets to explore a lot of places, but a dog going in the car every single day just seems so much.

Our family dog definitely doesn't find it a great experience, even if she doesn't mind it too much. I understand it isn't the case for every dog but she has admitted she gives her a little cuddle and treat before they get in the car as she can still be a bit nervous but that she is growing out of that/getting used to it.

AIBU to think this is a bit unfair on the dog? I guess it's not really that important, I'm just pondering it really.

At least your dd takes the dog for a walk after being in the car, my dd drives our dog along to Starbucks that is within walking distance for a pup cup!

Our dog loves the car, if we are walking along and someone has their boot or car door open she will try to get in!

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 29/07/2023 14:52

Our family dog definitely doesn't find it a great experience, even if she doesn't mind it too much.

It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out - you only put her in the car for the vets or the boarding kennel 😏

oviraptor21 · 29/07/2023 14:52

I'd be more concerned about the dog that never goes in a car (or on public transport) and thus never gets to experience different smells, sights and sounds.

My dog used to hop in quite happily because she knew good things would happen. Even if it was a mundane errand from our point of view it was more fun than being left at home for her. But she was also fine being left on her own (with the cats) for a few hours when needed.

Don’t be daft!

lousyatchoosingnames · 29/07/2023 14:54

Struggling to find anything to get upset about with this. I think you need more in your life if this is the level of not picking you're at.

ThrappleApple · 29/07/2023 14:54

YABU - half an hour in the car is nothing.

Sometimes my dogs go in the car and don't even get a walk at the end of it. They love car journeys.

We've done 8 hour trips abroad with stops every couple of hours.

If your dog only goes in the car when going to the vet or boarding it's not surprising that she only tolerates car journeys.

I can't imagine how limiting it would be if our dogs didn't like the car - no training classes, no trips to pet shops, no trips to the beach or the woods, no trips to somewhere they can swim. We're lucky enough to also have some great walks from the front door but we drive to places a few times a week. If we didn't have nice walks from home I wouldn't hesitate to drive everyday. I don't think that's at all unusual judging by the car park at our local woods.

ebts · 29/07/2023 14:55

Our dog loved the car. We frequently took her the 120 miles to visit my parents. We only had to mention my parents' names for her to run to the front door. She would seemingly be asleep until every time at the same certain point about 20 minutes from their house, she would wake up and get terrifically excited. Nothing at all to do with the extra treats my Mum would slip her in the kitchen!!!
My husband also took her in the car to work with him every day, a twenty minute drive. She was fine, far happier than being left alone at home where she was bullied by the cat!
Absolutely no idea what the OP is on about.

Dogs go in cars… it’s fine. I genuinely thought this post was going to be about your daughter leaving the dog in the car all day while she worked or something. It’s perfectly normal for some dogs to go in the car every day and if they aren’t big car fans they soon get used to it.

We have two dogs, one who loves the car and tries to get in every time we walk past it and another who is not as keen but will still be perfectly happy going on a car trip.

ttcat37 · 29/07/2023 14:55

You need to stay out of this one because your daughter is being a wonderful dog owner. If your dog isn’t great in the car then guess what- that’s your fault for not taking it in the car enough.
The enrichment her dog is getting massively outweighs any temporary discomfort in the car.
Perhaps you should follow her example, and get your own dog happier travelling in the car.

eurochick · 29/07/2023 14:56

I don't see the issue. Our family dogs came out with us regularly - it's better than being left home alone. They came to the woods and seaside (the latter about an hour and a half from us) and also on holiday to places like the West Country and Lake District (several hours from home in London). She had amazing walks in these places and loved it.

stevalnamechanger · 29/07/2023 14:59

I dog walk part time and most of the dogs are thrilled to be heading out in the car

As long as appropriately ventilated and kept hydrated

WhineWhineWhineWINE · 29/07/2023 15:00

It sounds like her dog has a lovely life and you are worrying about nothing.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/07/2023 15:06

I walk my elderly neighbour’s dog and am forever trying to stop her climbing in random cars on the way to the park. She loves a car ride!

NamelessNancy · 29/07/2023 15:10

I think it's great to get dogs used to car travel. Makes it much easier to do things with them which can in turn improve their quality of life. No idea at all why that would be a problem.

OhWelllWhatever · 29/07/2023 15:11

Dont be so daft. What an absolute non-issue.

Moomuffin · 29/07/2023 15:11

I think you’re letting the fact that your dog doesn’t like the car affect your judgement.

it completely depends on the dog, mine gets so excited when I ask her if she wants to come in the car, she loves it.

otherwayup · 29/07/2023 15:13

Really odd thing to get worked up about 😳
All dogs are different!

My little dog loves a road trip, she comes pretty much everywhere with us and has a little bed and safety harness in the car.
She's obviously totally relaxed as she'll have a little snooze sometimes.

Newusernameaug · 29/07/2023 15:16

My dog travels all over with me in the car and my friend lives in a van with 2 dogs.
it’s a really strange thing for you to even comment on.
It’s much nicer than a dog having to walk the same area and place everyday, so if anything you’re the one being cruel by not giving your dog new experiences.

annonymousse · 29/07/2023 15:19

Our dogs go in the car at least twice a day for walks otherwise all of their walks would be on lead street walks. Sometimes they come for a ride in the car just for the hell of it. They are comfortable and confident with car travel. Sounds like your daughter's dog is the same.

RootbeerLolly · 29/07/2023 15:20

I take my boss's bullmastiff in my pickup sometimes if he's not got enough space for him. He gets really excited about it! (the dog, that is).

However, he's used to having his head out the window which I don't allow and will continually paw at the window if it's up.

RootbeerLolly · 29/07/2023 15:23

I actually take a plank with me for him to walk up if I know I'm taking him. 😂 He's 10 stone so a bit heavy to lift. Pickup has a 4 inch lift so pretty high off the ground.

stargirl1701 · 29/07/2023 15:25

DH has our dog in his car every working day. She moves from farm to farm throughout the day.

bibbityboppityboo · 29/07/2023 15:28

Perhaps your current dog has given you a slightly different view - it's really common for dogs to travel in cars for an hour or so each way to go to a day out, at least where I live.

Maybe your dog wouldn't mind the car if it didn't mean the vets or kennels every time 😬

Batshit1 · 29/07/2023 15:28

My dogs are in the car for almost every walk, I’d rather drive them so where nice they can run around than just plod around the pavement in a lead. My older dog used to get car sick so we didn’t drive her around much for the first yea r but she gradually got Better and now getting in the car is her favourite thing!

NobblyBob · 29/07/2023 15:29

What a fantastic dog owner your daughter is, allowing her dog to enjoy varied walks and spending time and effort seeking out different areas to explore. She sounds great!
