To be mad at tourists?

AIBU to be mad at tourists? I live in a place that's popular with cruise ships. Which is fine, great for the local economy. My house it's is right at the end of the Main Street, cue lots of tourists holding maps and doing lots of pointing.

Today, the number of tourists have totalled to HALF of our population. That's a different gripe altogether, though.

I have two cats who enjoy sitting in the window and watching the world go by. I also have a six month old. The issue that I have, is that tourists are stopping to tap on my window (!!!!) to get a response from the cats. I could understand if this was a child once in a blue moon, but it's multiple times every day, and typically grown adults every time there's a liner in.

I've also had a good number of people look into my windows. Not just a sneaky glance as they walk past, but two hands on the window around their face so they can get a proper look in.

I've tried blinds. Someone knocking gave the cats such a fright they jumped and broke the blinds. I don't want to have to keep my curtains shut every day. I'm not going to scold my cats for being at the window, it's their house too! What do I even do?

I'm worried that my daughter is going to grow up thinking this is normal. It's also just incredibly infuriating. Where are people's manners! AIBU?

Put a sign in the window asking that they refrain from tapping/knocking.

MissesMorkan · 28/07/2023 11:45

Sounds awful. Can you grow something evergreen and prickly around the window? A window box with something quite tall in it during cruise season? A sign that says ‘Fuck off, nosy cruisers’ in several languages?

samestyle · 28/07/2023 11:46

Put up a cctv sign
Is a metal fence possible?
Shout out the window
Move

Theunamedcat · 28/07/2023 11:46

Just put the one way stuff on your window your cat can see out they can't see in

Annaishere · 28/07/2023 11:47

Put a sign saying leave me alone!

sunflower893 · 28/07/2023 11:49

I get it your frustration. You can get a special film put on windows that means you can see out, but people can't see in ( the only thing is it reverses at night! But you probably would have your curtains closed then anyway). Might be worth looking into?

Flickersy · 28/07/2023 11:49

The next village over is like that where I'm from. I've got a couple of friends who live there and they get people in their gardens wanting to have a look around. Someone else in the village once found a couple of tourists in their kitchen. Its a very pretty village but people seem to think it's like Disneyland rather than people's homes.

This. It’s amazing for situations like this (or for when you just have nosy neighbours!)

Cherrysoup · 28/07/2023 11:49

Put the stick on frosting on. Or one way mirror, although then you might get people staring at themselves!

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 28/07/2023 11:52

Blimey do people still use paper maps? 😂

Yeah sounds annoying, stick a sign up.

DisquietintheRanks · 28/07/2023 12:00

Maybe you'd be happier on a quieter street or in a house where the windows don't face directly into the pavement? Because living in such a prominent position and not wanting to screen your windows was never going to end well.

transformandriseup · 28/07/2023 12:00

YANBU Mousehole gets this quite a bit as people love looking in at the tiny living spaces but I'm not sure what the solution is. Maybe a sign.

EvilElsa · 28/07/2023 12:01

Was coming on to suggest the window film as well. It's popular on the barn conversions around here with there giant floor to ceiling glass (we live in an area with tourists too).

notacooldad · 28/07/2023 12:03

Sometimes use city maps in foreign countries to save data and cost🤷‍♀️

continentallentil · 28/07/2023 12:03

You can get those strips for you window so people can’t see in, they come in nice shapes

that’s if you can’t afford to go for one way glass straight away

Stick a sign up for the cats (but honestly if they don’t like it they’ll move)

Make plans to move longer term

ThatFraggle · 28/07/2023 12:06

Steps to take 1. CCTV sign (you don't actually have to get the camera, people nowadays are scared to end up as memes). 2. Prickly plant at the base of the window to prevent people coming up close. 3. A 'private property' sign. 4. Window film.

Come back when you've done all that, but it seems like that would solve your problem.

That would be great if there was housing available.
Not once did it cross my mind that people would be tapping or looking into my windows when I viewed the property.
I understood it would be busy, but this is an entire different level.

Honestly you shouldn't have to consider it. People should be able to behave with a modicum of intelligence, common sense, and respect. Unfortunately your average member of the public isn't that bright.

In the meantime, I would do as others suggest - signs, prickly plants if possible.

If all else fails, get some window boxes on the first floor and keep a can handy to water them every time you get tourists at the window....

You can't live in a tourist destination and not expect tourists. And tourists are often thick and annoying, sadly. Getting mad about it won't change anything. I say this advisedly as someone who used to live in central Bath!

Film on windows, or internal shutters, or just good old net curtains (cheap ones can be replaced easily enough if the cats trash them).

Or something to stop your cats sitting on the windowsill, could you block that and have a tower etc so they can still see out but less obvious to tourists?

Peony654 · 28/07/2023 12:16

cruise ships famously don't benefit the local economy, they benefit the cruise company. And I'd either put a sign or get the cover so they can't see in

Esmereldapawpatrol · 28/07/2023 12:16

You can get some stuff that you stick on the window, doesn't affect your view out but people can't really see in?

That is annoying, in our village we have houses right on the pavement, I always make sure I don't look in as mum mum always said it was rude and I have taught my kids the same!

Trevorino · 28/07/2023 12:22

That is so rude! I can’t understand how people think that is ok to do.

The next village from me has a famous train that makes a stopover there. You can always tell when the train is in because there are tourists walking in the middle of the road! It’s not some quiet cobblestone road, it’s a proper main road. I can’t believe no one has been run over yet!
