Not Asshole.

And anyway Am I Being Unreasonable is better.

AIBU?

It's very unfair to donkeys, the reputation they have is wholly incorrect.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 28/07/2023 07:15

Just cultural differences in spelling and nuance.

My impression (correct me if wrong): US 'asshole' is 'lighter' than UK 'arsehole'.

In the UK, if someone is described as an arsehole it usually means they are an out-and-out bad person. A US 'asshole' suggests that they are something of an idiot, an unpleasant one, but more the 'asshole' man who wouldn't let you have a seat on the bus when you were on crutches, than the 'arsehole' man who ruined your entire life.

I just remember when I realised what someone was actually saying for the first time when they were calling someone an arsehole

Why are you being so coy? Why not just what you think someone is actually saying when they call someone an arsehole?

Annaishere · 28/07/2023 07:34

I thought it was heavily implied

I think you will find it was because some prude in the USA decided that the word 'arse' was too crude, they changed it to 'ass' which is of course a donkey. It means the buttocks and is still used as meaning a pratt or idiot, but it really was changed due to prudery. And we won't go into 'fanny' and the meanings of that in USA/British English.

We can’t be arseholes

Anyone can be an arsehole.
Including those who claim it’s a sexist insult.

Are you calling me an arsehole ?

PuppyMonkey · 28/07/2023 08:31

To PP, I posted the question here because I’ve seen several threads on MN of late asking “Am I the asshole?” Rather than the far more suitable for MN “Am I being unreasonable?” I was simply pointing out that UK people don’t even say asshole, they say arsehole. So it’s a crap saying and it should be AIBU on here. Lifetime ban for anyone using this term etc. Apart from when I said it just then.

Oh lord, British-English pedantry.

There are plenty of American users of this site, but even if non-Americans prefer to use ‘asshole’, who cares? It’s not like it’s difficult to understand what they mean.

I’m not a native speaker of either British or American English, and I use both words.

PuppyMonkey · 28/07/2023 12:11

Nah, mostly just wanting people to use the correct MN term Am I Being Unreasonable tbf.Grin

Are you saying that at first you did not realise that calling someone an arsehole was in reference to an anus?! You thought it just meant “idiot” and then suddenly twigged that it means bum hole?

No Am I being unreasonable. Just seems like something of a stereotype for women being emotional and hysterical.

Arsehole- just that think about what the adjective actually means objectively

YABU

I agree. If you want to post an AITA thread do it on reddit.

Annaishere · 28/07/2023 06:28

I’d rather be called a bitch I think

I'd rather be a bitch actually, even though it is sexist. At least it has overtones of power and agency.

Arsehole is just disgustig.
