AIBU to walk out of work?

Help me out. Maybe ESH.
I work in a fairly large salon. Large team and we are understaffed as salon supervisors or coordinators. Recently a young team member was given a huge promotion (above me) due to a relative she had in the company in a higher position. While the new manager is nice, she is 21 and has no maturity or experience at all. She is late to work, leaves early and makes constant mistakes that needs more experienced staff to fix. She is immature in so far as she will roll cigs in common areas, leaving tobacco everywhere, leave rolled cigs on our work desk in view of clients, sip water from gin glass whilst in the client areas, takes many smoke breaks, no respect for days off, constantly texts me asking me about work things on my days off, on sick days and after hours.

it used to be that one week we would be on earlies and the next week we’d do a late, but she always has me doing lates which means I have to close and sometimes I don’t get finished until after 9pm 3 days a week. If there is any issue at close, it’s always my problem. Staff don’t clean up, my problem. Staff don’t wash equipment, my problem, on a few occasion’s equipment broke and other staff members left with keys and I was left unable to leave at home time, as I couldn’t leave shop unlocked or couldn’t leave the clients unfinished. Everyone else gets to leave on time but I feel like no matter what goes wrong nobody asks me to stay, it’s just expected and it’s having huge effect on my diet (I can’t eat after 9pm but I get one break during the day if I start work at 10am) and sometimes after a late finish I’m expected to be back in work next morning to open at 6:30am. I can’t plan anything like the gym or plans with my partner it just feels my life revolves around work.

three months ago I got offered a new job, I told my manager who told me she’d try get the boss to match it, I turned other job down, I waited 6 weeks for an answer and they came back and told me I was earning more than the norm in the Industry (this isn’t true, I’m earning the standard wage) but in this industry the hours aren’t standard - 6:30 starts, 9pm finishes… salons are 10-6. Closed Sunday. We don’t get Sunday pay.

sometimes my manager doesn’t come to work on time and I miss my break, I rarely get to leave on time, the late finishes are never shared. The only request I had was my two days off together and even that is not being honored the last few weeks it’s constant excuses why she needs me to swap days with her, funeral, boyfriend travelling and all.

this evening I had enough, other staff member was not helping and she was the root cause of me having to do an additional two hour over time last week (11pm finish) and when I asked her to clean shelves she rang manager and threatened to go home. My manager rang me and I told her if that’s how the business works now; I’m going home too. And I walked out. Now I’m scheduled for a disciplinary meeting on Friday with the director of the company.

advice?

I’d go to the bloody disciplinary and tell them the whole lot in no uncertain terms.

Go out feeling like you made yourself heard!

This OP. You could be me. I gave my notice today. Fuckers the lot of them. Apply for other jobs, upwards and onwards!

Mumsnut · 27/07/2023 13:49

I should post in Legal if I were you, OP. There is at least o e very savvy employment lawyer popping in there very helpfully

Murdoch1949 · 27/07/2023 17:01

Document all your concerns. Go through each at the meeting. In detail. Throw them all under the bus.

LindaHoney · 28/07/2023 18:13

updating all you wonderful people. Had my meeting today and followed advice from here. Had my facts and didn’t deviate from the facts. 3 managers present today. I didn’t tolerate any excuses. I laid the facts bare. Every defense my manager used I shot down.
“but I asked you”.
the law isn’t something a staff member opts into
“but I said thank you”
thank you does not fix the issue or prevent it from happening again
“but you don’t have to do it”.
if I don’t do it, there is no other option. I walk out and leave the place open?? I wait as someone drives one hour to me?
“if you made the manager aware she would come in”.
no, I did make the manager aware and at no point did she suggest coming in
“it’s an extraordinary incident”
yes it is, caused by poor planning, consistent emergencies on behalf of poor management. No spare equipment or machines, no spare keys
“there’s spare keys in the office and spare machine in other location”
the office was closed and nobody was around, the other location refused to send the spare and took an hour at end of day to send a broken machine, not new one.

“you need to tell your manager if you have something important planned after work”
I don’t feel the need to explain myself when I have life plans after my end of day
“The other girl was spoken to by both her managers”
clearly she wasn’t as she walked in behaving in the same manner and nothing appeared to be addressed.

they had no doubt full intention of giving me a warning as I heard from a girl i had a grievance with months ago that today my manager contacted her to go for coffee, who doesn’t want to get involved as she’s agreed she was out of order and has since moved to a different job. They never followed up the formal complaint and I mentioned it today, also referring to management reaching out to her. Management did not see that coming.

manager said she did not offer to stay late last night for closing as she had to stay late for me night before, I pointed out that she also amended her roster to start later yesterday to reflect her late night. She finished early and she said she didn’t feel like doing me a favour after chaos I caused night before by leaving early.

two points I made re: same was

  1. punishing me with lack of sleep and rest between shifts was breaking the law
  2. her “plans” did not trump the law, or my welfare/duty of care towards me and if I was doing her a favour by coming in early she needed to facilitate the cover of someone working the end of the day the night before. Simple as.

instead, I ended meeting saying I felt I was being constructively dismissed. Senior manager was quite taken aback and said it was a serious statement to make. I said I felt absolutely justified. They said they’d make things better for me, high work ethic valued can’t find other staff bla bla bla.

I think they didn’t expect me to find out they reached out to previous employee today and I don’t think manager had authorization from her aunt/senior manager. Senior looked very shocked and apparently manager has confronted ex employee on telling me about her texting me.

oh well done
i do hope things change, while you keep up the job searching

Willmafrockfit · 28/07/2023 18:20

it is their problem if they can't find other staff, not yours to shoulder!

TheCatterall · 28/07/2023 18:52

@LindaHoney oh well done. Giving you a little standing ovation over here. :)

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 28/07/2023 19:05

Keep up the job search and get out of there asap. You are the whipping boy. Well done for today though. Your work ethic will be valued elsewhere. It isn't where you are now.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 29/07/2023 00:48

Well done the hair beauty industry in general needs to come up to best business practices rather than being 20 yrs behind current working legislation.

Unfortunately, if the business trades on a Sunday you probably won't get an enhanced pay. It's pretty standard across the industry especially in bigger companies. Very few salons pay Sunday hours.

Breaks should be adhered to and booked out on the system accordingly. If you choose not to have one or run over on a client- there wont be much sympathy from management I am afraid.

The good news is if you're a stylist/techcian/therapist/apprentice/assistant there are jobs available pretty much every where. Only around 40% of salons are fully staffed (approx.) Starting wages are becoming more competive with a lot more to offer incentive wise. Working hours for the most part are still pretty shitty.

DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT take any client details off the system or from a client. This breeches GPDR and best business practice. You will be in breach of contract. Also, if you leave you may not be able to work with in a certain radius of the salon you're currently at. Again, this is pretty industry standard. (Check your contract or employee handbook) if you are found to be doing either you may face litigation. Although, difficult to do it will tie up your time and your ability to work within industry. Reputation is every thing.

To get around this share your full name or that you have an Instagram page. Take pics and ask the client to follow you. Only If your contract allows this. Clients will find you if they want to. It's inevitable. Clients rarely leave stylists/therapists they leave salons.

Also as you are probably already aware if you hand your notice in you may (most likely) be asked to leave then and there and paid in liue. Choose your time wisely.

If you have any questions or want any more insights please pm me.

Yessss that has to be satisfying.
Well done. Its hard to self advocate.

Now start aggressively applying for other jobs and get the hell our of dodge

TaylorSwiftFan · 30/07/2023 23:29

Sounds like a dreadful environment for you to be.

Well done on advocating for yourself, how are you geeking today?

AllyCart · 24/08/2023 11:37

@LindaHoney

How are you doing now? Any progress?

(I didn't post on the thread previously as I was a few days late reading it and then saw your last update, which covered my thoughts.)

SoreAndTired1 · 14/12/2023 12:11

How are things going, @LindaHoney ? Are you still working there?

LindaHoney · 18/12/2023 01:28

Hi! No, I’m not.

I went back after my huge meeting, my heart was no longer in it and although management said everything they said, how things would change etc, nothing did. I had my holidays planned for the second week of august, 2 weeks annual leave.

In the meantime, I interviewed elsewhere and got offered a position days before I was due to go on holiday, to start the first week of September in a completely different industry.

I didn’t hand in my notice, I went to work as normal on the day of my holidays, and I walked out the door knowing I would never be coming back.

My manager, who was relying on me to do the work basically, was texting me during my annual leave, asking me if I could cover certain days I was due to be off/Sundays. Those messages went ignored.

3 days before I was due back off annual leave, my general manager who knew I was back in the country, text me asking me if I could come back 2 days early as they were short staffed. i said no.

the morning my shift was supposed to start, I text in sick and I never returned. They’ve requested sick certs and different things, I’ve just ghosted them.

the manager has now left and the general manager is struggling to find staff with English to the standard they need for my old role. By all accounts, it’s still short staffed, but they don’t really have anyone that they can take advantage of so the other locations managers are apparently in and out trying to bridge the gap until they find more staff.

so much for “standard money for the industry”. Clearly not!

my new job is amazing, my boss is kind, I’m paid sick days, he buys us coffee and lunch sometimes, he’s very very chill and it’s 9-5 mon to Friday. I’m so happy. This will be my first Xmas off!

Well done OP.

Serves them right.

It must have felt so good after everything they put you through.
