AIBU for wanting this lorry to park somewhere else?

We are hoping to move into our new home soon and I have noticed a lorry is always parked outside it. It belongs to someone who lives down the side road but that road is too narrow for the lorry to go down into.

Not only is it a real eyesore right in front of the house but because our house is sunken from street level it feels even more imposing and blocks out sunlight. We also have to park our own car somewhere else because it is always there.

AIBU for wanting it parked elsewhere? Are there any measures I can take so that he might park somewhere else?

I wouldn’t buy the house in this situation.

greenteaandmarshmallows · 26/07/2023 19:34

Don't buy it or build a dropped kerb as soon as you move in

ThreeLittleDots · 26/07/2023 19:36

If it's a public road with no restrictions then there's zero you can do. Maybe why it's on the market!

TrueScrumptious · 26/07/2023 19:36

Well, you can’t stop it from parking there. You’d have to get in there first to park your car.

FatOaf · 26/07/2023 19:39

You can't just "build a dropped kerb". The pavement belongs to the council, not to you. They'll remove the dropped kerb, replace the normal kerb and charge you for the work.

Unless you have a right of way between your property and the road (which would be stated in the title deeds), you can't legally drive across the pavement and you have no claim over the space in front of your house.

NIMFY.

Tapasgoofy · 26/07/2023 19:41

It’s a public road. They can park there. It’s not their problem you don’t like it

PrinceHaz · 26/07/2023 19:42

I think the best you can do is visit the owner and ask politely if they can park it elsewhere as it is preventing light from getting in to your home.
If they’re funny about it, buy some old bangers and leave them there.

StarlightLady · 26/07/2023 19:42

You are not being unreasonable for wanting it. But it is not unlawful for them to park there.

FatOaf · 26/07/2023 19:43

If they’re funny about it, buy some old bangers and leave them there.

Buying, taxing & insuring "old bangers" just to occupy a portion of road seems a bit extreme.

Check with your council. Depending on the size of the lorry and whether it's a commercial vehicle, there are usually restraints on parking in residential areas.

drpet49 · 26/07/2023 19:46

I wouldn’t buy it.

Tontostitis · 26/07/2023 19:46

My new neighbours did thus and the bloody thing was huge the other neighbour reported it to the council and they had to park it elsewhere.

decaffonlypls · 26/07/2023 19:48

Assuming you are already committed I'd buy an old car park it there as soon as feasible. Leave enough room for your car. Or apply to get kerb dropped.

Tulipvase · 26/07/2023 19:50

Do the current owners not have a car?

Also, I think there may be covenants which restrict what can be parked in an area - maybe you can check the deeds on your new house to see if there's anything helpful?

Desdemona44 · 26/07/2023 19:56

In this situation I'd buy a banger and park it there. My neighbour had to do this because people would not stop parking over half their driveway even when asked nicely not to.

ScroogeMcDuckling · 26/07/2023 20:01

is it a recovery lorry, because the terms and conditions of operating licences are pretty strict

councils don’t generally want lorry’s parking on roads either, they want them parked in their operating base

DanceMumTaxi · 26/07/2023 20:02

Everyone will tell you, you don't own the road, they can park where they like etc and they’re right. But this would still completely annoy me. I’d be quite cross about it tbh to the point that I wouldn’t want to buy the house.

OhcantthInkofaname · 26/07/2023 20:03

Why did you buy this house?

BoobyDazzler · 26/07/2023 20:03

I’d also buy and old car and park it there.

It's a removals truck.

We've already bought the house and it wasn't something I realised was a semi permanent fixture on the road when we bought it 😭

Oh dear. I guess you will have to get used to it then. 😟

Inertia · 26/07/2023 20:13

You need to get an application for a dropped kerb in to the council as soon as you can.

Suspific · 26/07/2023 20:14

Park outside your house when the lorry moves and it will soon find a new place to park it.
