AIBU for wanting this lorry to park somewhere else?

We are hoping to move into our new home soon and I have noticed a lorry is always parked outside it. It belongs to someone who lives down the side road but that road is too narrow for the lorry to go down into.

Not only is it a real eyesore right in front of the house but because our house is sunken from street level it feels even more imposing and blocks out sunlight. We also have to park our own car somewhere else because it is always there.

AIBU for wanting it parked elsewhere? Are there any measures I can take so that he might park somewhere else?

Ask the council if lorries can be parked in that area, it’s unusual.

Recovery trucks are different because in an emergency, they can be utilised by the driver instantly, and it suits everyone for clear roads, but a removals lorry is not an essential vehicle I wouldn’t of thought

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 26/07/2023 20:24

Can you not park one of your cars there where possible? Obviously you can't do it 24/7 but it might help deter them.

GoodChat · 26/07/2023 20:28

I think a dropped kerb is the logical solution, if there's space for a driveway. The council wont drop it if there's not.

whatdoidonowffs · 26/07/2023 20:32

If it’s over 7.5t check with the council if their O license allows them to park on the street

I think the best you can do is visit the owner and ask politely if they can park it elsewhere as it is preventing light from getting in to your home.
If they’re funny about it, buy some old bangers and leave them there.

This was going to be my suggestion.
mask nicely first, then find a way to block a lorry from parking there. Quite out of order to constantly part a massive lorry in front of houses.

It’s a public road. They can park there. It’s not their problem you don’t like it

Not sure this is actually true for large commercial vehicles.

Medusaismyhero · 26/07/2023 20:43

This happened somewhere I used to live - it was a huge big monstrosity and was there every weekend. I assumed one of the couple was away all week driving and then brought the lorry home at weekends. I was renting at the time and moved out about 6 months after it started but it was a bloody eyesore.

maddening · 26/07/2023 20:49

I am pretty sure lorries cannot park just anywhere, I know of someone who lived behind a business park and successfully got lorries stopped from parking there, a guy from the park had to go and put cones out every evening at 6pm and move lorries on (I only found out as I was leaving work one time and ended up asking about the cones)

moistclam · 26/07/2023 20:56

Only on mumsnet do people "buy an old banger" for the sheer purpose of blocking the front of their house 😂🤦‍♀️

londonrach · 26/07/2023 20:58

If lorry owner has mot, insurance and pays road tax and it public road nothing you can do ...re buying house I'd rethink it ...

Spanielsarepainless · 26/07/2023 21:08

Round here it's bloody campervans and those huge home-from-home things like a large lorry that park four feet from people's front windows. I would look for a different house.

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/07/2023 21:11

Oh God, you poor things. I bet the sellers are happy to be letting go of their old house with a permanent eyesore outside. Bad luck OP.

xyz111 · 26/07/2023 21:23

I would park my car there. Might make them realise!

Murphs1 · 26/07/2023 21:36

I had something similar on the grass verge opposite my house. I left a note and they moved it but then it came back. I contacted the company that owned the vehicle and asked nicely if they would mind parking it elsewhere, I had to do this twice mind you, but it’s not been seen since.

Soapyspuds · 26/07/2023 21:38

But it is not unlawful for them to park there

Depending on the size it could be unlawful as another poster has referenced.

Check with your council. Depending on the size of the lorry and whether it's a commercial vehicle, there are usually restraints on parking in residential areas.

I agree with this, it’s worth checking with the council.

Lorries can be subject to different parking restrictions than cars so it’s not necessarily legal for the lorry to be parked there even if it would be legal for a car to be parked there.

millymae · 26/07/2023 21:46

This problem highlights what is becoming an increasingly common issue.
There are a huge amount of people nowadays who drive vehicles for work which in the past would have been left overnight on their employers premises.
Where I live we have British Gas, Open Reach, Housing Association and Delivery Company vans all parked up on the roads overnight. Not lorries I grant you, but vehicles that end up having to park on the road wherever they can find space because the majority of people have 2 cars and there is no room on drives or in front of their own own property.
You might well argue that bringing vehicles home has advantages for employees but it also saves these companies a lot of money because they don’t have to provide overnight parking for their fleet of vehicles.
I can’t deny that I’d be well annoyed if a lorry was parked up in front of my house for long periods but as to what can be done about it I have no idea other than
parking my own car there as soon as I could

sewerrat · 26/07/2023 21:50

drop the curb. failing that as soon as the lorry moves park an old banger there and dont move it.

Overthebow · 26/07/2023 21:52

Report/check with the council, and also park your car there so the lorry can’t park there.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 26/07/2023 21:55

It seems crazy when people do it just because they don't want anybody to park their car outside their house; but a removal lorry that permanently blocks out all of your light? I don't think it's that mad an idea at all. You shouldn't have to go to the hassle and expense, but if the amount that it improves your quality of life in your home is worth the cost to you, why wouldn't you?

I'm the first to say "Tough, it's a public highway, you have no right to expect to park there", but this is extreme. Huge lorries are purely functional things and they should be in a commercial depot when not out moving on the road.

I imagine OP's neighbours would be quite grateful as well, as the lorry would probably take up, what, five or so spaces - so if there's only one particular length of road where it can park, by leaving an old banger in the middle of that length, that frees up four spaces for everybody else with normal vehicles to keep in residential areas.

Thatboymum · 26/07/2023 22:10

Contact the company’s transport manager and enquire about the operating licence specifically where the vehicle is supposed to be kept when not in use as most are legally required to be parked back up at the base so depending on the answer to the question you may find a solution

Thepossibility · 26/07/2023 22:11

There are heaps parked around my area and it makes it so hard to pull out onto a road when you can't see what's coming in either direction because huge vehicles are blocking the view of the road.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 26/07/2023 22:15

If it's parked up there all the time, why not cancel buying the house and just see if you can move into the lorry instead!

ThaiSweetChilli3 · 26/07/2023 22:26

moistclam · 26/07/2023 20:56

Do you drive?
Huge lorries aren't just an eyesore. They're also dangerous. They make it difficult to see ahead, and as most residential roads are pretty narrow 99% of the time they are either parked illegally (wheels on pavement) OR take up so much space that a full 2 lane road turns into practically a single lane...

MrsCarson · 26/07/2023 22:42

If it's causing the road to be damaged then surely the council won't allow it to park there. I definitely go for a dropped curb as soon s you can and park your car in the spot it uses once it moves.
