Unless you are a toddler and are talking about bananas.

People never used it back in the good old days of MN.

I had a Nanna and a Granny, the latter was delightfully posh and in later years delighted in being called Grandmother instead. Nana always looks like narnar to me; it has to be Nanna.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/07/2023 19:39

Are you going to outlaw Nonnas as well? And Nanis? And Nai Nais?

Oma and Opa? Memaw?

viques · 26/07/2023 19:41

Why can’t a child be taught to call a banana a banana? Do children eat apps, ranges, mangs, apes and erries?

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 19:41

AnotherThingToThinkAbout · 26/07/2023 19:38

But you still haven't explained why nana / nanna is so offensive to you? As many of us have (or had) nanas that we really love, you should explain...

"Why" is a very good question, to which I suspect the answer is snobbery (sorry), as I can't think of a rational one. I'm not suggesting that people don't love their grannies/nanas, though, whatever they call them.

Maybe it's regional? We've always had nanas. The one that really irritates my husband is that we have a granda without the D. Think it might be a hartlepool thing 🤣

elephantmarchingin · 26/07/2023 19:41

I have a nana. Have always called her that since I was little.

That's her name to all us grandchildren.

I personally detest 'grandma' but I don't have a rule that no one should use it

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 19:41

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 26/07/2023 19:40

You should be sorry for being an insufferable snob, not for being shit at writing.

🤣

If you think it’s “a bit common” then why don’t you just say that OP?

”Nan” and “nana” seem much more popular in working class families, as opposed to “granny” or “grandmother”, based on the people that I have met.

Notimeforaname · 26/07/2023 19:42

I don’t blame her, it’s awful. My family has grannies.

And my own mam recoiled at the thought of being granny.😆 To her that's not a nice name. She thinks its sounds horrible and like you're really old.
She likes being Nanna.

The grandmother on the other side of family is Granny and she said she liked that and being a "Granny" now gave her the excuse she always wanted to not have to dye her hair anymore and embrace the grey!
Both grandmothers in their 60s.

AuntieMarys · 26/07/2023 19:42

I called mine nana, but I don't want to be called it

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 26/07/2023 19:42

Oh well in that case YABVVU.

Personally I chose Granny because I don’t much care for Nana myself, and also it was clearly actual (very lovely and extremely cool) Nana’s first choice to keep up the family traditions, but I don’t see any reason to ban it.

Do you have reasons?

biddyboo · 26/07/2023 19:43

My mil was very insistent that she would be called Grandma only, not Nana or Nanny. She is a snob too. My mother (in Ireland) is Nanny.

CraftyGin · 26/07/2023 19:43

Can't wait for us to be Nana and Papa.

NotBotheredAnymore · 26/07/2023 19:43

The word Nana has been around for a century at least. Perhaps you need therapy to find out why you dislike the word so much and why you want to insult so many people.

However toddlers shouldn't use nana for banana. Can't they just point?

KweenCnut · 26/07/2023 19:43

My Nana was very posh!

WhenSomedayComes · 26/07/2023 19:43

Nanna or Nana are cute, like the Italian Nonna. I love the girl’s name Nana too.

Notimeforaname · 26/07/2023 19:44

Lots of "Nanny" in Ireland too.
Most people I know say Nanna or Nanny to be honest. You'd hate it here op 🤣

RedRobyn2021 · 26/07/2023 19:44

I call my grandmother "Nanny" and I'm 32

My DD calls my mum Nanny too

Ah, you see so already knew three youthful, stylish and excellent Grannies (my age, a slightly older friend and my MIL) which swayed my choice. Also, it will be excellent for my full Granny persona when I choose to inhabit it.

HalloumiLuvver · 26/07/2023 19:45

Nana very popular name for granny/grandma in west coast Scotland where my family comes from.

Don't knock a Nana till you've tried it. They are usually great fun, have an amazing refilling biscuit tin and won't tell Mum when you've had too much "Ginger". Wink

RhosynBach · 26/07/2023 19:45

I’m so confused why anyone could be offended by the word nana?! I have a nana she’s amazing. I can’t shorten it to nan, she’s nana. It would be like randomly changing my mums name from mum to mam. Just wouldn’t feel right. Never knew it was childish or chavvy. I’m in wales and know a lot of people with nanas, nains and nans.

It’s barna. That’s the official abbreviation. Just ask my DS.

Grandmuhmah

ButterCrackers · 26/07/2023 19:46

How do you pronounce ‘Bucket’?

WhenSomedayComes · 26/07/2023 19:46

Class anxiety is fascinating and sad.
