Unless you are a toddler and are talking about bananas.

People never used it back in the good old days of MN.

My mum is Nana to ds

I called my ex’s mum nana (wasn’t her name) she was the matriarch of the family every called her nana

Mmhmmn · 26/07/2023 21:31

Grown adults still using "mummy" and "daddy" referring to their own parents creeps me out massively.

luckylavender · 26/07/2023 21:31

@Nanny0gg - if you've been around Mumsnet that long then you'll know this always blows up in the same way.

Mum2jenny · 26/07/2023 21:32

Loathe ‘Nana’ as a term, but that’s me. Would never answer to it, ever!

triforcetotem · 26/07/2023 21:32

Because it’s true. It’s horrific and working class

You need to give yourself a slap.

@AnotherThingToThinkAbout That's actually an interesting link, and it surprises me (though maybe it shouldn't). I thought everyone in real life used "Granny" and it was only on MN that people use Nan or Nana-pronounced-Nanna.

You need to get out more I called my dad's mum granny and his aunt nana. I used it a lot growing up.

Also regional - unheard of where I grew up, normal where I live now.

The clue is in my MN nickname. Smile

Here is a favorite dessert from my neck of the woods: often called 'nana pudding.

America???

I call my dad daddy

he is referred to as daddy in our family as in how is your daddy (only me and my sister call him daddy)

it’s not just an upper class English thing other cultures use it too

DonnaDonna0 · 26/07/2023 21:36

Tbh I’m surprised you’re not too posh for Mumsnet, it doesn’t seem like the social media place the elite spend their free time.

it sounds weird to my ears too but I know it's common in Northern Ireland.

You're one of them rags to riches and you now think you're somebody well hate to burst your bubble but you're still a nobody. If you are educated get your money back as soon as you can it taught you nothing.

I find your post very offensive.

Dh's mum was known as Nanny Seaside to her 38 grandchildren and great grandchildren, before passing. She was originally named Nanny 2 dogs, by the first set of grandchildren but the next generation renamed her.

My mum is Nana to her 4 grandchildren. She didn't want to be called Nanny or Nan. That's what she chose. And?

Oh don’t be ridiculous.

The OP is being a snob, but there’s no need to be ‘offended’, you can just think she’s a tit like a normal person and then forget it.

Oh, is this about shortening banana to nana?

You're right, i also think the pronunciation is different.

Grandmother- nana, short sharp 'a'
Banana - nana, long 'a' sound. Like nar nar

A sounds are really nothing at all to do with r sounds in very many accents. There is no r in banana.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 26/07/2023 21:41

True. Lots of "daddies" to adults in the Southern US.

Wolfiefan · 26/07/2023 21:43

My mother asked to be known as Nana (followed by her first name.) So we did.
She’s not really well enough to care what she’s called any more so if you don’t mind we will keep using the name she wanted us to use. And think fondly of it.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 26/07/2023 21:44

Banana - nana, long 'a' sound. Like nar nar

Only in non-rhotic accents. Here's a surprise; lots of Mumsnetters are rhotic speakers.

ZolaBudd · 26/07/2023 21:45

It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Honestly. Have a word with yourselves

riotlady · 26/07/2023 21:45

I love Nana, I think it sounds so sweet! That’s what I’ll pick when I’m a grandparent I think. I have a granny and my mum is granny too so think I would associate that too much with them rather than myself iyswim

Oblomov23 · 26/07/2023 21:45

@continentallentil

Thank you. I said I was offended. I was being polite. I did think that she was a fucking tit. But I didn't like to say. Thought it might come across as a bit rude. But if you insist? She's a total fucktard. Better?
